The hunt for the zombie vaccine lands the gang in Osaka, where both the zombies and our leads are raising the bar. When they need an economic miracle to get into high society, their friend Takemina lends a hand, but capitalism is built on greed, you know?

For me, I am almost certain that the literal philosophy debate last volume is the best that Zom 100 is ever going to get. It’s wildly uneven, as a rule, but that section was so inventive and funny that it made everything worthwhile.

We start out here with some playful jabs at Osaka and its people, as the zombies haven’t evolved… they’re just super boisterous. It’s silly, but a cute enough way to mix it up, even if they don’t do much with said zombies when the volume is over and fine with.

No, Osaka is run on tinned food, which makes for a pretty solid basis for an economy, as it turns out. This leads to a modern-day system run by a Canning Chief and a high society group living in a castle, who tax the land and lure the workers into a casino with promises of wealth. Said group also happens to hold our heroes’ only lead on the zombie vaccine.

To get their in, the boys start a bar, after drafting in their slightly shifty college buddy, Takemina, who knows his way around a hustle. I quite like what they did with his character, even if he’s yet another in a long line of disillusioned people we keep meeting (bonus points for the Rube Goldberg joke though).

Speaking of philosophy, does it count as fan service if the guys are suggesting the women wear skimpy bikinis to serve drinks, the women balk at it (poor Bea is so funny during this), but we get the ‘imagination view’ anyway? That’s pretty ‘have your cake and eat it’, though I did appreciate that Bea is as voluptuous as Shizuka is toned. At least the art gets the details right.

After the boys learn they can’t run a bar worth a damn, they get introduced to the casino, which is a cautionary tale that also has one of those ‘all or nothing’ death games that cannot possibly be operating on pure chance or the place would be bankrupt, based on the odds alone. Nobody bothers to bat an eye at this.

It’s the first sign that this storyline is about to start tugging hard on its narrative threads and, rather than withstand such scrutiny, they slowly begin to unravel. Subsequently, the bar hits the big time with some amusing little tricks, the bustling night life is a nice change of pace, which all leads to a not-so-unexpected heel turn.

What IS unexpected, however, is who it involves, and this is where the story starts to really collapse in on itself. The idea that Akira would screw his friends over as thoroughly as he does is a lot to swallow, and I think the author knows it because they try and justify the hell out of it.

They quickly dismiss the notion that he’s just running a scam on the higher-ups, which makes him come off as a real backstabbing jerk and, point about capitalism or not, it kind of dumps on all the character development they’ve worked to establish to this point.

With just a couple of pages trying to set this idea up it falls absolutely flat. While I’m glad they didn’t take the obvious choice of having the new guy screw them over, it’s not like something is automatically better because you go with the more surprising choice.

The other parts of the story are fine. I enjoy this manga for the most part, but it rarely flat-out impresses me and this current plot is certainly not unwelcome as capitalism eats our planet alive, but it’s both heavy-handed and underbaked.

3 stars - I appreciate the attempt here, I really do, but the execution leaves me really wanting and it does a fair amount of damage to what it had done already, which is a heck of a pill to swallow.

After zipping all over Japan for the last couple volumes, Akira Tendo and his crew finally settle in Osaka for an extended story arc involving a friend from the past, fast zombies, and an unbalanced class system. The cliffhanger definitely makes me glad I have the next volume on hand.

This whole volume revolves around the nature of money and what it means to have or not have it. I liked how it was focused on the importance of doing a job you enjoy and finding the fun in the activities you take part in along with connections with others.

Akira and Kencho reunite with an old college friend and open a bar together in which they invite the people of the can capitalism place in Osaka to partake. It's a fun time as they work together with some good laughs and now the stakes are rising as they gamble things away.

Happy New Year as the group is headed for Osaka where there may be people working on a vaccine. Meanwhile, Akira and Kencho hope to find an old college buddy.

They also find a human settlement, a marketplace where canned goods are the currency, and a casino in a castle. But they run into a problem because the fat cats only allow high rollers in the VIP section where the supposed vaccine scientists are.

I learned a thing!
Apparently, people from Osaka have a reputation:

"In Japanese media, if there's a character from the Kansai region (Osaka especially), chances are they're the most crass character present. In stark contrast to the rest of Japan, Japanese Politeness (or even just basic concepts like decorum and "good manners") doesn't exist for these guys. The people themselves are portrayed as lacking any semblance of sophisticated culture, being idiotic, loud and passionate, alcoholic, gluttonous, materialistic, prone-to-violence, incredibly cheap (yet somehow always broke), and speaking with a characteristic Kansai accent instantly recognizable to native speakers of Japanese."

Now, in Zom 100, this seems softer, that Osakans are more passionate and boisterous, not so much crass or whatever, although I guess that's a little hard to tell when we're talking about Osakan zombies (where's the decorum in flesh-eating?).

It IS pretty hilarious that in this series, zombies kind of reflect their former more alive selves in some ways, which is pretty fun, and I guess if I was a zombie I'd spend most of my time not really wanting to party with other zombies, so on one hand, you'd be safe as far as me joining a big horde, but on the other, I'd be that one zombie that's always hiding out in a room alone or whatever, which can be the most deadliest zombie of them all!

OF THEM ALL.

Hmmm...in the beginning I couldn't care less about the bar because of Kencho being a lewd creep. Though, I did like this volume for the setting, people involved and concept. I didn't think this world would get currency again, but it makes sense that canned food would be the currency. All the more, capitalism restarted. I didn't expect the crew to get to live in a castle in this sense. I thought they would just travel and stay in, because that's kind of how it was going so far. I was pleasantly surprised.

Just like the capitalistic setting, Kencho and Akira had normal world jobs again, being bartenders, though not exactly the same due to him being the owner; it was short term too.

I didn't care for Takemina, and I still think he'd prove to be a useless character aside from this arc. I don't think we needed another football bud. They seem to be popping out of nowhere at this point - Akira and Tendo were enough as they were in that regard, now we have a third idiot, one too many.

It is time! Collecting cans in Osaka + friendship + tons of zombies~

Our group celebrates the New Year in classic Zom 100 fashion. Haha, at times you would think there are no zombies! But we are getting in the fray not too long after as our group arrives at the gorgeous Osaka! But what is this? The zombies are different! Yup. We have seen various zombies over the series, even a shark zombie, but for most of the zombies were the same speed. The same way you could destroy them. Well, say hello to Osaka zombies, who are still very much genki and spirited and are not that easily defeated. That part definitely made me laugh a lot because from what I have seen in manga and anime Osakans are definitely a different kind of person and it is fun that this also translates to them as zombies.

I was a tad worried at a point because with those new zombies.. what would happen next? Given that there are several volumes out so far and thus far no one from the main team has died/turned zombie I wasn’t worried too much, but you never know. Never trust zombie books! But Kencho and Akira meet up with an old friend from university, Takemina! I really loved that we met a new character and that the guy was just as weird/funny as our duo, I can see the friendship! I loved the flashbacks~

And we learn that there is a safe heaven from zombies! Those castles aren’t just good for invading humans it seems! Though later in the story we see that the top elite there… well you know how in the apocalypse it isn’t always the zombies you should worry about? That also goes for these peeps. I loved seeing our group try to think of a way to meet the big boss (for reasons) and I loved that they decided to go for a bar (though Kencho, eww no dude just no, I am glad the girls were also like heck no bye). But doing a bar in the world of zombies? Well you can guess it is not the easiest, but I loved that they kept trying even though they had to manoeuvre over some bumps.

I am sad though to see how Akira changed. We know that he can be easily influenced, or however you want to call it, and I just wasn’t happy with it. I wanted to give him a big old whoop on the head. I am curious how long this safe heaven will last. I am sorry, but I have read way too many zombie novels to know that safe heavens generally don’t stay safe heavens. I am hoping this one stays it, but I do worry.

Oh, and that bonus story just made me laugh so much. They really have some fun things on that bucketlist.

In this volume we get some of my favorite things, a new type of zombie “The Osakan” (lol) and we get a new protagonist that is pretty interesting and reminds me of Spike from Cowboy Beebop, which I absolutely adored. We already saw a lot of development from him coming out of his hard guy shell to something more reasonable and caring towards Akira. He also I think fits well with our current band of heroes. I’m excited for volume 10, and the cliff hanger we left on I’m curious how it’ll turn out and maybe shift dynamics in the group, unless it’s all an important ruse?

As usual, this series is chaotic. The characters are chaotic. The situations are chaotic. And now even the zombies are chaotic (making the Osaka zombies jumpers just because they're Osakan was so on brand). I have to say, I was surprised by what Akira did. He disappointed me, and a part of me hopes he grovels for a bit before the others forgive him because he really was icky. I guess it's like they say, money changes people.

A volume containing a single arc that had a nice progression to it, leading up to big finale that will start in the next one! I thought the bar they started and ran together was great! And then Akira got turned evil by capitalism. :/ They’re really hitting on all the prominent issues in this manga, and doing a good job of it too.

Man, taking a break from this manga has ruined my taste for it, or maybe this volume just wasn't very good, to me, I'm not sure. However, it's still fun, I'm just not as high on this volume as I was with the previous volumes.

Overall, still a very fun manga that oozes charm and personality.

I swear this series never disappoints.

Akira and co roll into a new town and meet up with an old pal. When Akira becomes overwhelmed with greed I was laughing so hard. He constantly needs to be reined in by the group. Now they have a plan to get him to come back. On to volume 10!

The first 70 or so pages I had no problem with but after not reading it for a bit and reading the rest I was dragging myself to finish this volume. The ending intrigued me so hopefully the next volume will be better.
