An inspiring keepsake that honors the heroic sacrifice of today’s martyrs for the Christian faith—and shows how their actions mirror the courage of a long line of brave Christians.
In the twenty-first century, we are witnessing an escalation in Christian persecution like we have rarely seen since the first century. Many people don’t realize that today thousands of Christians are dying cruel deaths throughout much of the world. There were, in fact, more martyrs in the last century than in all the previous Christian centuries combined. Millions have given their lives since the fall of Rome, and today tens of thousands die annually for their faith in Jesus. Most of these modern stories are not legendary; in fact, many are unknown.
The New Book of Christian Martyrs commemorates those modern-day heroes. In this update to Foxe’s Book of Martyrs, Johnnie Moore and Jerry Pattengale highlight key martyrs of past centuries and feature stories of contemporary martyrs around the world. Through tears, Johnnie and Jerry offer this compendium of heroes from the first century to the twenty-first century, from Europe to Africa and from Asia to the Americas, to inspire Christians around the globe. Today, we live in solidarity with them and in the next life, we will rejoice by their side. We will never forget their sacrifice for the truth.

This book was incredibly heavy (figuratively AND literally), filled with the accounts of deaths across centuries and the world. As a Christian in the US, it was very humbling to read the accounts of other Christians living in such dangerous circumstances and dying for their faith. Like another reviewer, I’m so glad I own this book, but I can’t say that I would read through the entire thing again from start to finish. It’s a great reference book for reading individual accounts and remembering those who have come before us.
I think the authors did a great job of including historical and geographical context for each section. It’s very well organized. I can’t imagine having done all the research to write this book. Hats off to those guys! I do appreciate that they include martyrs from all sects of Christianity - even those I may not agree with in terms of theology. It gave a deeper understanding of the Christian religion as a whole. I’ve been a Christian for 25 years and learned so much! Reading this book also gave me a deeper appreciation for God’s love and care of His people.
Overall, would highly recommend! Maybe just read it over a longer period of time. (I was reading for a book club and so packed it all into a few weeks.)
I am glad that I own this work, but I wonder if I shall ever listen to it again. It has so many gruesome stories of man's inhumanity to man that it borders on repulsive. On the other hand there are truly stories of incredible devotion to the Lord and bravery unbounded.
