Any good novel, even if it’s part of a series, should be able to stand alone. “The Overnights” by Ian K. Smith does, even if there is some background information about the main character that is missing if one hasn’t read the previous two books.
The story is a bit slow to get started, but once all the characters are introduced and brought into the picture, it really takes off. Police misconduct is one of the central themes in the book and is done very well.
Unfortunately, the main character, Ashe Cayne, a PI with a couple of eclectic sidekicks, is unlikeable and unrelatable. He is cocky and unnecessarily antagonistic, seeking out and provoking violence in situations where it could’ve been clearly avoided. Take the beginning of chapter 6, for example. He walks up to a building doorman - a person whose job is to guard the entrance and immediately turns the aggression up to 100.
Ashe is also very cruel and vindictive. What he does to Julia was gloatingly staged and wiped away any shred of character relatability. He could’ve come off “the bigger person” in that situation, but he chose to engage in what could only be described as “mean-girl behavior.”
Yes, the main character is a PI and has to have a “quirk” or two. And while I can (barely) get past all the golf, the constant quoting is just unbearable. It feels forced and makes the main character more annoying than anything. At times, Ashe is downright cringe. “El hombre sin nombre” anyone?
Now, despite the fact that I generally enjoy mystery/detective stories, I wholeheartedly accept that I’m not the target audience for this book. The objectification of women in this book is really prominent and unapologetic. The male gaze is leaking out of the pages! The repeated descriptions of women wearing “skin-tight jeans” and equally form-fitting tops.
The “twist” was both, predictable and out of place. The author seeded enough doubt throughout such that the reader pretty much expects the “final reveal.” Yet, the ending just felt forced and unsatisfactory. Would’ve much preferred for the book to end with Ashe on a golf course, finally enjoying the vacation he very well deserved.
Entertaining private investigation / mystery novel in which ex-cop is hired by Morgan Shaw, the #1 rated TV anchorwoman in Chicago to protect her from threats and to help her investigate the murder of Reece Williams, a black Chicagoan gunned down by a white cop.
The killing smells and Ashe Cayne uses his cop connections and street smarts to figure out what really happened. Cayne's investigation of the cop murder was very well done.
At the same time that Cayne is investigating the murder, Morgan Shaw's number one competitor also dies suddenly from causes that the medical examiner cannot figure out, but Cayne also starts to investigate this crime as well because this anchorwoman was also receiving death threats. Cayne tracks down the perpetrator of this crime as well.
This was good! This may be one of my favorites in the series. I read the series out of order but I’m now ready for book 5!! Morgan Shaw was a character for real. This was a good mystery, it kept me hooked ! Ashe Cayne is so smooth, I love that man 🤭
This is the first book by Ian K Smith that I have read. It started out just OK, nothing grabbed me; there was a lot of background and characters being brought together for the story to really get going. Then, all of a sudden, it just took off. This is the first novel I have read with Police misconduct as part of the story. I must say, it was very well done. By this I mean that a very serious subject was woven into a very complicated story and the situations did not feel unrealistic to me. Not having any direct experience with Police, and not being much of a news watching person, this book brought me on board with both current events and the news business, and a bit about large city Police Departments. When Top Rated News Anchor Morgan Shaw begins to receive death threats, she’s not taken seriously. When Morgan is also facing the annual Sweeps week at her station, she needs to come up with something really HOT- something to wipe out the rival station, to ensure her Diva ranking. Risking her life, and placing others in danger brings this story onto front pages. When she finally convinces former Police Detective and Ace PI Ashe Cayne of her problems, he agrees to help her, and the story takes him into some very uncomfortable territory.and in several very interesting directions. To avoid even the hint of spoilers, I can only say that while Morgan did some great work and exposed a serious set of problems, and survived, it wasn’t without personal cost. This is a great story.and I now have to go back and read books 1 & 2 of the Ashe Cayne Series. While I really enjoyed this book having not read books 1 & 2, and you will as well, I am going to go back and read them just for background and character development. I recommend this book to everyone who enjoys the Matt Coyle, “Rick Cahill” series. I look forward to the next installment. My thanks to Amistad Publisher and NetGalley for providing this download copy in exchange for my honest review !
Former Chicago police officer turned private investigator Ashe Cayne reluctantly agrees to protect top rated news anchor Morgan Shaw, who has been receiving death threats. Sweeps week is quickly approaching and she has to come up with something really good to ensure she wipes out the competition and stays on top. She unearths a case involving the questionable shooting of a black man and a suspicious accident of a witness. Considering Cayne left the force over his unwillingness to toe the company line in an unlawful killing, it takes very little convincing to get Cayne to use his police contacts to help her dig up more information.
I never understood why a private investigator would agree to work as a body guard, and the ending was a bit predictable, but the police misconduct part of this book was good. This is the third book in the series, and it can easily be read as a standalone, but the first two both contain darker subplots involving Cayne’s pursuit of justice that I found intriguing, and that wasn’t included in this one, so if you can get past the considerable golf references, it’s a series worth reading from the beginning and I look forward to the next installment.
Amistad via NetGalley kindly provided me an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Ashe Cayne is an up-market gumshoe who used to be a Chicago police officer but who left the service due to a dispute over an unlawful killing that he witnessed. He mixes with a lot of up-market professionals and agrees to take on a case involving a stunning and very wealthy TV news anchor called Morgan. I must admit I was very suspicious of her from the start and as the story evolves my apprehensions were confirmed. The case leads Cayne into investigating the shooting death of a black man and the unlawful killing of a witness. The author's style is fast-paced using short chapters and succinct language except for Cayne's internal monologues about the case and his love affairs. There is an abundance of characters who appear from time to time adding complexity to the novel but occasionally I had a problem remembering who some of them were. Shawn Callon, author of The Simon Montfort Spy Series, wrote this review.
Ashe Cayne former Chicago PD now PI is asked by a popular news anchor, Morgan to protect her as she is the target of threatening notes car vandalism etc. At first not convinced, Ashe declines as this is not what he really does but then is drawn into an investigation of the shooting of an unarmed black man.
After agreeing to help her, the threats escalate and as he finds more info on the shooting, Morgan plans to air the investigation during sweeps week. As they get closer to the truth, more deaths occur, all of which are suspicious. Ashe, Mechanic and Roz rotate protection detail and Ashe delves into the shooting that Morgan ends up airing thus winning the November ratings sweeps.
As a side, Morgan's rival at a different TV station dies mysteriously and Ashe is investigating that as well. The shooting investigation concludes successfully but there is a twist ending which seems really plausible.
First thanks #netgalley for an advanced copy of the book. This is my first fiction book by Dr. Ian K. Smith, as I have read most of his health-related books which have been great. I enjoyed P.I Ashe Cayne and this book has inspired me to go back to read the prior stories! Like Det. Cross in the James Patterson books, I can envision P.I Ashe Cayne stories coming to life on the small or big screen. This story deals with a topic all too familiar here in the United States, a black teen killed by a white police officer. The investigative reporter, Morgan Shaw believes that someone wants her dead due to her explosive investigation into this story and she turns to P.I Cayne for protection who turns her down but subsequently helps her after a series of unfortunate incidents. This one is an interesting story about TV ratings that also combines police violence against blacks. I enjoyed this book and looking forward to reading stories about P.I. Ashe Cayne. #theovernights #netgalley
This is the first novel I have read from Ian K. Smith and I was suprisingly shocked as to how good this was! I picked this up on a library run and I am so glad I did. The story follows Ashe, a private investigator hired by a high powered news anchor to find out who is threatening her, at first he doesn't bite but then he does. Simultaneously, he is also assisting with a recent shooting of an unarmed black man in the streets of Chicago and you follow both journeys as we solves both cases. I really like it when our MC have dual investigations, because you get to see them work in different ways with different people. I do have to say that ending GOT ME! I was not expecting that and honestly I am so glad I didn't. It made the book so much more interesting. I already put the other books on hold at the libary.
(3). I encourage anyone who has not encountered the Ashe Cayne books to give them a try. They are all well crafted, really fun P.I stories. Classy, contemporary and easy to read. Ashe is a very engaging protagonist, works with his mind much more than his fists or other violent manners, and always seems to have lots of beautiful women circling around. This one is an interesting story about TV ratings that also combines police violence against blacks. Very contemporary, not too far fetched and as I said, a very enjoyable read. I look forward to the next entry in the series. Good stuff.
I love Ashe Cayne and his witty personality. I loved this storyline and the references to real situations.
Dr. Ian writes these stories so well. I am so infatuated with the medical examiner and all some terms used to describe what the cause of death is. The explanations are out of this world and so easy to understand. He is definitely my favorite detective writer.
I loved Amir Abdullah and his narration. My guy is consistent with his character voices and definitely is a voice actor and not just a narrator.
Ashe is back, protecting a starring local news anchor and getting pulled into investigating a police shooting of a young Black man. His self-assurance, optimistic outlook, love of golf and all things Chicago make him an enjoyable leading character. The story is fairly straightforward with a nice twist that may set up a fourth installment. Chicago fans will love the references to the city and the neighborhoods and celebrities that make Chicago what it is.
PI Ashe Cayne is hired by evening new anchor, Morgan Shaw, to protect her from the death threats that she is receiving. Morgan is trying to win the sweeps with a spectacular story about police corruption which puts an even bigger target on her back. Ashe gets more involved than he planned as the shooting of an innocent black man is something he can't look away from. So while protecting his clients, he is also helping to expose the truth behind the shooting.
Listened to the audiobook. I enjoyed the first book in the series. The second book was ok but the pace was too slow. This one did not have a pace. I constantly struggled to stay awake. On more than one occasion I lost that struggle. There were not any "aha" moments or surprises. Thirty-five percent of the novel could have omitted. The only reason I will read the next book in the series is out of curiosity. If it drags like this one I will not finish it.
I knew it! I suspected who killed the person that mysteriously died in this book and I most say it was clever! I love Ian’s writing I have been deep in the Ashe Cayne series for days now and I can’t seem to get enough. What makes these books even better is being set in Chicago. The way Ian incorporates the history of the city is phenomenal. I also like how Ian is exploring the different types of corruption in Chicago. This was a great read.
Even though this is #3 in a series, it can stand alone. Ashe Cayne, PI and former Chicago detective, is in a race against the clock to protect the high-profile news anchor, Morgan Shaw, who is willing to sacrifice everything to keep her #1 rating, especially with the investigation of the suspicious shooting of an African-American man by a white cop. Many layers to the news world and its priorities.
I thought this was a great book. It’s a nice little hard boiled detective story that takes place in Chicago. The story was a little predicable and all over the place, but was enjoyable. The only other annoying part was that the author clearly took real people in Chicago and changed their name in a wink wink fashioned. Mayor Bailey selling the parking meters? A rich woman named Penny? Nah, that’s not real……
Read two Ashe Cayne mysteries and patiently waited for this one. No disappointment; had to continue reading straight through. I like reading about Chicago with poltical, professional, criminal, and neighborhood intrigue. I like Ashe Cayne' s interpersonal relationships. When will #4 come out?
I didn't realize this was Book #3 until I logged into Goodreads tonight. Now I'll go back and read the first two in the series! Great to read about an ex-Chicago cop who is now working as a private detective bringing down corruption in his hometown. Tons of familiar Chicago locations! And even better that the author is a black man writing about a black detective.
This is my first time reading Ian K. Smith — where have I been?!!! Even though I figured out “who dunnit” midway, I still plan to binge-read more “Ashe Cayne” until there aren’t anymore, because the writing is so well done, the characters are realistically drawn, and I absolutely love the quotes!
This is my first book in this series. Initially, I felt like it was a rewriting of the Robert Parker PI Spencer - the silent but deadly partner, boxing, philosophical... But the story got much better the more I read. I enjoyed it, but not sure I will read any more in this series.
The book does not disappoint and keep the suspense going until the very end. If you read books 1and 2, I would definitely recommend you read this one. Dr.Ian we await your next book. Don’t make us wait so long.
Pure entertainment with a competitive insight look at network news. Glitz & murder go together like a horse and carriage. Mix in nasty police corruption and Ian pens a very descriptive and fast moving work. Chicago, my kind of town.
This fast paced mystery thriller had me on the edge of my seat the whole time. I do not write reviews often but this was a real page turner. The plot twists and the ending were not what I could not have anticipated. Well written and researched. Highly recommend.
As someone who works in TV news AND is from the Chicago area, this book hit all of the dots. Even the fictional names of the anchors and stations mentioned in the book were knockoffs of several Chicago news people. 👏🏻 Excellent plot, great writing with scene setting spots and restaurants!
Mr. Smith stay having you hooked to Ashe Cayne and wanting more and more. Now this ending has left me in shocked that Ashe let this happen but at least he got justice and an answer in the end and that’s a plus in my book.
Journalist nightmare is losing the sweeps, so what are the risks to being on top?
Nice to learn so much about tv news and the ambitions of those in the lights. As all of Smith's novels, this has the twists and subterfuge we have come to enjoy.
Could not get into this book. Everyone was beautiful, all the banter was clever, they all dressed elegantly, the homes were stunning. I prefer my hero's a little more gritty, and the descriptions a little more realistic.
Finished all four of the Ashe Cayenne series in about a month. All quick reads that kept me entertained, especially as a Chicagoan. I love how he slightly changed the names of famous Chicagoans who are currently still in their respective roles. Looking forward to a rumored tv series featuring AC.
