Jane Austen was an English novelist known primarily for her six novels, which implicitly interpret, critique, and comment upon the English landed gentry at the end of the 18th century. Austen's plots often explore the dependence of women on marriage for the pursuit of favourable social standing and economic security. Her works are an implicit critique of the novels of sensibility of the second half of the 18th century and are part of the transition to 19th-century literary realism. Her deft use of social commentary, realism and biting irony have earned her acclaim among critics and scholars.

The anonymously published Sense and Sensibility (1811), Pride and Prejudice (1813), Mansfield Park (1814), and Emma (1816), were a modest success but brought her little fame in her lifetime. She wrote two other novels—Northanger Abbey and Persuasion, both published posthumously in 1817—and began another, eventually titled Sanditon, but died before its completion. She also left behind three volumes of juvenile writings in manuscript, the short epistolary novel Lady Susan, and the unfinished novel The Watsons.
Since her death Austen's novels have rarely been out of print. A significant transition in her reputation occurred in 1833, when they were republished in Richard Bentley's Standard Novels series (illustrated by Ferdinand Pickering and sold as a set). They gradually gained wide acclaim and popular readership. In 1869, fifty-two years after her death, her nephew's publication of A Memoir of Jane Austen introduced a compelling version of her writing career and supposedly uneventful life to an eager audience. Her work has inspired a large number of critical essays and has been included in many literary anthologies. Her novels have also inspired many films, including 1940's Pride and Prejudice, 1995's Sense and Sensibility and 2016's Love & Friendship.

I’m so happy to be on the tour today for Jane Austen’s Little Book of Wisdom. It was a delight to read little snippets of her works. Poignant, insightful, humorous, and charming, the book is perfect for anyone who loves her work.

I’m a big Jane Austen fan, and Pride and Prejudice is one of my most reread books. It was also one of my favorite books to teach, and I have many fond memories of introducing Austen’s work to high school students. One class in particular loved Pride and Prejudice so much that they gifted me a personalized copy of it. It’s the most treasured book in my collection.

Jane Austen’s Little Book of Wisdom reminded me why I love her writing so much. It’s is a lovely collection of quotes taken from Austen’s books, poetry, and personal correspondence. The book is divided into eight sections, and each focuses on a different theme – from love and longing to family to female strength, the messages are as relevant today as when they were first penned. I love the universality of her words, and this book spotlights her wit, charm, introspection, intuitiveness, and wisdom.

I also love that the end of the book includes a reader’s journal – blank pages where you can jot your own notes and reflections. The book also includes a list of the complete works of Jane Austen for reference. It’s a great little gift for any Janeite!

Special thanks to Austen Prose PR for having me on the tour. All thoughts are my own.

My original plan was to read a few pages a day, but I found myself continuing to turn the pages to read just one more beloved Jane Austen quote. This is a beautiful little collection of Austen quotes from her books and personal correspondence. The book is divided into eight parts with quotes arranged by topic, such as love and longing, friendship, and home and society. It includes a handy list of Jane Austen’s complete works for easy reference. Additionally, the book ends with several pages intended for the reader to make note of favorite Austen quotes or any reflections one may wish to record.

Jane Austen’s Little Book of Wisdom is the perfect gift for the Janeite in your life. Many thanks to the publisher for a gifted copy in exchange for my honest review!

Jane Austen’s Little Book of Wisdom: Words on Love, Life, Society, and Literature, compiled by Andrea Kirk Assaf, is adorable, yet stylish. At nearly 400 pages, the book is thick, but remains compact. I can fit it in my purse.

As expected, Jane Austen’s Little Book of Wisdom showcased the wit, depth, humor, and intelligence of this beloved author. Included quotes came from the entirety of Jane Austen’s works – novels, letters, prayers, juvenilia, and poems. Eight sections divide the quotations by topic. One of my favorite Jane Austen prayers appeared on page 92: “May we now, and on each return of night, consider how the past day has been spent by us, what have been our prevailing thoughts, words, and actions during it.” A wise word, indeed. I noticed that a handful of quotes repeated partially or in full at different points in the book.

Perhaps my favorite part of reading Jane Austen’s Little Book of Wisdom was trying to place the quotes within their respective stories and scenes. I recommend Jane Austen’s Little Book of Wisdom as a gift for Jane Austen fans.

“Expect a most agreeable letter, for not being overburdened with subject (having nothing at all to say), I shall have no check to my genius from beginning to end.”
Excerpt from personal letter, Jane Austen

The quotable Miss Austen from her letters and novels has a lot to say on life and this Little Book of Wisdom brings the quotes together under several topical sections. I was eager to peruse the quotes in this giftable palm-sized collection of sagery.

The Jane Austen Little Book of Wisdom is the size that will slide into a deep pocket or a purse to be pulled out now and then to glance through a few quotes or can be sat and read through in a brief amount of time. With a striking smooth matte cover and pretty antique blue styling, the cover side flaps that will tuck around pages, and the carefully formatted pages with graphics to accent and organize the sections of the book, this will make a nice treasure for the reading shelf.

„Nobody minds having what is too good for them.“ Excerpt from Mansfield Park, Jane Austen

The quotes are sorted by topics so can also be great for a reference to those looking for a quote to slip into speech or correspondence. And, for every occasion, the book can offer a fun quote to wow friends, family, or total strangers.

Personally, I’m a huge fan of Austen so I was delighted to page through and spot many quotes I’m already well familiar, but also several more that I hadn’t recalled or were altogether new to me. Andrea Kirk Assaf brought together some clever words by my favorite author.

As I’ve said, this will be a great gift for a lit lover or one who likes to use quotes, a reference tool, or a pocket treasure for an Austen fan.

“I declare after all there is no enjoyment like reading! How much sooner one tires of anything than of a book! When I have a house of my own, I shall be miserable if I have not an excellent library.”

Not to put my own words on par with such a talented author’s, but I would also add that there is no enjoyment quite like reading Jane Austen. And in Jane Austen’s Little Book of Wisdom, Andrea Kirk Assaf has compiled some of the most delightful quotes from this classic author, taking snippets from not only her famous books but also her personal letters and poems.

Austen’s wit is clearly seen, especially in the quotes taken from her letters.

Like:

“Which of all my important nothings shall I tell you first?”

or:

[On arriving in London] “Here I am once more in this scene of dissipation and vice, and I begin already to find my morals corrupted.”

Those and similar lines had me appreciating Jane Austen’s sense of humor and witty timing even more than I had before. But I also gained new insight into her as a writer, as a person of faith, and as a reader. She is one of those rare authors of whom I am always wanting to learn more, and Jane Austen’s Little Book of Wisdom allows me to do so in her own words. There are also copious quotes from her books, many of which wrapped around me in a familiar embrace, the kind of touchpoint that reminds you of comforting moments lost in the pages of a delightful novel. I feel quite confident that no matter if you’ve read every Austen novel or none, you will find a quote on these pages that you recognize and love.

Bottom Line: Jane Austen’s Little Book of Wisdom is a tiny masterclass on Jane Austen, compiled affectionately by Andrea Kirk Assaf from the author’s novels, letters, prayers, and poems. Easy to pick up and read in quick snippets as time allows, this pocket-sized book is the perfect gift for any Austen fan or for those who are just now discovering her. I loved the themes and how the quotes were sorted, as well as the added touch of the journaling space at the end of the book. Even at 400 pages, I could have kept reading indefinitely because, after all, “But for my own part, if a book is well written, I always find it too short.”

“Nobody minds having what is too good for them.” ~Mansfield Park

If you know me well, you know I love all things Jane Austen. I love her books, her wit and wisdom, studying her life, and collecting anything Jane Austen related. And her quotes are some of my favorites! I’m also a collector of quotes, so this little book was right up my alley.

“Nothing was so likely to do her good as a little quiet cheerfulness at home.” ~Persuasion

I loved how Assaf organized the various quotes into sections. There is Love & Longing, Friendship, Home & Society, On Being a Woman, A Philosophy of Life, and others. And every single quote is a zinger of the best kind. I began marking my favorites, only to realize I had fewer unmarked than I had marked. Essentially, I love the entire book. Thanks to the organization and style, any time I need a quote for a good occasion, I’ve got dozens at my almost-immediate disposal.

“I do not want people to very agreeable, as it saves me the trouble of liking them a great deal.” ~Excerpt from a personal letter

I loved this book so much, I immediately looked into other “Little Book of Wisdom” collections Assaf has curated, and I’m looking forward to adding to my collection. I’ve got my eye on the C.S. Lewis collection.

“There are certainly not so many men of large fortune in the world, as there are pretty women to deserve them.” ~Mansfield Park

If you like Jane Austen, and the wit she brought to life situations and infused into the characters in her books, I think you’d also love this little collection. It would also make a great gift book, for all the lovers of Literature in your life.

Many thanks to Assaf, Hampton Roads Publishing, and PR Austen Tours for having me on this tour and the gifted copy of the book. These are my thoughts.

This book is absolutely precious! Filled with quotes from Jane Austen covering a variety of themes, this book is truly stunning from the first page to the last. Every time I picked up "Jane Austen's Little Book of Wisdom: Words of Love, Life, Society, and Literature", I was whisked back in time, and did not want to put this sweet book down!⁣

I absolutely love Jane Austen, and believe that her books are timeless in so many ways. The themes she writes about are still poignant today, and I often see myself in some of her characters. Her writing is full of so much heart, emotion, depth, and wit. This book, compiled beautifully by Andrea Kirk Assaf, is so unique and special!⁣

This little book is truly delightful! I adore how the quotes from Jane Austen's various works, both professional and personal, are separated into sections based on the theme that is prevalent. I also adore how there are pages in the back of the book for me to write notes to add to it as well.⁣

JANE AUSTEN'S LITTLE BOOK OF WISDOM is all the little nuggets of wisdom from Jane Austen's classic novels. It's Austen's poignant words about love and life all wrapped up into a gift-sized book. A perfect addition to bookshelves or as a gift for Austen fans!

I am such a fan of Austen and have read her books and seen the movie adaptations multiple times. She so well captured societal norms and relationships while painting the lovely English countryside. I have found her stories and writing to be inspiring and poignant. This book takes her best moments and words and makes them stand out on their own. I've also found that when words are extracted like this that they can resonate more as you relate to them and think about what the author was trying to express. A truly delightful collection and one that will keep a prized place on my shelves and coffee table. It's aesthetically pleasing as well and a cute book. Highly recommended!

Jane Austen’s Little Book of Wisdom is divided into eight themes: Love & Longing; Friendship; Home & Society; On Being a Woman; Life, Death, and Spirituality; The Arts, Intellect, and Literature; Good Manners, Virtue, and Vice; and A Philosophy of Life. Some sections are longer than others, but all feature quotes from Jane Austen’s six finished novels, other fiction and poetry she wrote, and even her personal letters.

Reading these quotes whisked me right back into these novels I so love. Admittedly, I’ve only read three of Ms. Austen’s novels: Persuasion, Emma, and Pride and Prejudice. As such, the quotes from these three in particular captured my attention and reminded me of how much I enjoyed reading each novel (and, in the case of Pride and Prejudice, enjoyed the film adaptation). These characters and stories are refreshed in my mind, and I’ll need to reread these books soon! However, the quotes from her other works also reinvigorated my desire to finally read her other novels.

Many of my favorite quotes were in the Love & Longing section. What can I say; I’m a hopeless romantic! Some standouts for me included:

‘My affections and wishes are unchanged; but one word from you will silence me on this subject forever.’
- Pride and Prejudice

‘Perhaps it is our imperfections that make us so perfect for one another.’
- Emma

‘You pierce my soul. I am half agony, half hope… I have loved none but you.’
- Persuasion

Another section I particularly enjoyed was The Arts, Intellect, and Literature. Naturally, as a bookworm and lover of music! These quotes were among my favorites:

‘It is only a novel… or, in short, only some work in which the greatest powers of the mind are displayed, in which the most thorough knowledge of human nature, the happiest delineation of its varieties, the liveliest effusions of wit and humour, are conveyed to the world in the best-chosen language.’
- Northanger Abbey

‘I declare after all there is no enjoyment like reading! How much sooner one tires of anything than of a book! When I have a house of my own, I shall be miserable if I have not an excellent library.’
- Pride and Prejudice

‘Without music, life would be a blank to me.’
- Emma

Whether you read these quotes over the course of an hour or savor them throughout a year, Jane Austen’s Little Book of Wisdom is charming, witty, and perfect for anyone who loves classic literature. It is a quick and easy read full of inspiration and humor, and would make a wonderful gift for a loved one or treat for yourself! It will also likely lead you to read or reread Jane Austen’s timeless fiction; I know I will!

Special thanks to Austenprose PR and Hampton Roads Publishing for the review copy of this book!

Over 200 years after publishing her first novel— Jane Austen's writing continues to delight, resonate with, and inspire readers. Transcending language, culture, and even time. Her insightful thoughts, opinions, and observations regarding the people, places, and society around her and of course her own experiences of living, continue to prove valuable as she presents them to us (we the readers) through her fiction as well as through her letters and poetry. Her sparkling wit, humor, and vivacity of mind continue to speak to us as we navigate the daily course of our own respective lives. Whatever we seek— be it adventure, friendship, love, faith, inspiration, or some blend of these things. There is always something new to be experienced when reading or re-reading Jane Austen's work. As we continue to grow, change, and evolve as people— Austen's work remains steadfast. As a soft laugh, a comfort, a beacon, or as an enduring literary map accompanying us as we explore the depths, shallows, and waves of our own lives. Although the location, clothing, and customs have changed over the course of 200 years— the foundation of human nature and feeling remain the same. In my opinion, this is the primary reason that Austen's words and work continue to reach and impact us so. I always find joy, comfort, and delight in reading Austen's words. Whether it is visiting with the Dashwoods at Barton Cottage, as Marianne plays us a cheerful song and later speaks to us of art, nature, and poetry, or enjoying quiet conversation and wise advice from Elinor. Or perhaps while we listen as Elizabeth Bennet casts witty barbs at Mr. Darcy for his overly proud attitude and unwise words about "His sense of her inferiority..."! Or as we swoon alongside Elizabeth as Mr. Darcy says "...My affections and wishes are unchanged; but one word from you will silence me on this subject for ever.”

"Jane Austen's Little Book of Wisdom" provides hundreds of quotes from Jane Austen! All presented in a beautiful book that is convenient to travel with. The introduction was very interesting to read, the text is printed nicely on high-quality paper, and the front and back covers as well as the spine are a blend of lovely shades of Yale Blue, Spanish Blue, and Cerulean along with beautifully understated gold accents. I loved reading this book and will revisit it often! This book will appeal to many readers. It is a great book for any Jane Austen fan! Whether you have loved her books for years or are just discovering your interest in her work. I highly recommend this collection! Thank you very much to Austenprose PR, Red Wheel Books, Hampton Roads Publishing, and Andrea Kirk Assaf for providing me with the wonderful opportunity of being a part of this tour and for providing me with a physical copy of the book to read and review honestly.

“It isn’t what we say or think that defines us, but what we do.” - Sense & Sensibility

I often wonder how Jane Austen would feel if she could see how much her works are still beloved over 200 years after they were first penned. Her words are still as powerful, relevant, and inspiring today as they were in the 19th century.

This delightful little book featuring hundreds of quotes from her novels, letters, poems, and prayers is an absolute gem for Jane Austen fans. It showcases not only her wit and wisdom, but her deepest thoughts on a variety of subjects.

The introduction provides a brief history of Jane’s life and invites the reader to become intimately acquainted with one of history’s most brilliant writers.

It’s divided into eight parts:

*Love & Longing
*Friendship
*Home & Society
*On Being a Woman
*Life, Death, & Spirituality
*The Arts, Intellect, & Literature
*Good Manners, Virtue, & Vice
*A Philosophy of Life

Also included is a list of Jane Austen’s complete works and a brief biography of the compiler, Andrea Kirk Assaf.

At the end of the book is a Reader’s Journal which provides 30 beautifully framed blank pages where readers can record their own thoughts.

I throughly enjoyed reading these delicious morsels. Each quote showcases Jane Austen’s talent & I loved the way they were illustrated on the page. It was fun recognizing those iconic lines from her novels like Pride & Prejudice.

“In vain I have struggled. It will not do. My feelings will not be repressed. You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you.”

I also loved discovering inspirational quotes I wasn’t familiar with. Her witty humor, profound nuggets of wisdom, and heartfelt prayers made me appreciate her even more. It’s a beautiful compilation I highly recommend to those who love Jane Austen. I received an advanced complimentary copy from AustenProse and the author. All opinions are completely my own & voluntarily given.

Jane Austen’s Little Book of Wisdom:
Words on Love, Life, Society, and Literature
By Jane Austen
Compiled by Andrea Kirk Assaf

Who hasn't heard of Jane Austen? Read a book she's written? Or watched a movie or miniseries based on one of her books? I would hazard a guess that there are few who have access to any of the aforementioned media who have no knowledge of her. I know that my first introduction to Jane Auster was when my great aunt sent our family an illustrated children's edition of this book because it too had 5 sisters whose last name was Bennett.

This book would be a lovely gift for someone new to the works of Jane Austin or one who's very familiar with her writing. I love the compact size of this book, it's perfect for slipping into a pocket or a purse, so it is readily available when you need to refer to Jane's wisdom.

I found the following quote to be extremely appropriate, "She always travels with her own sheets; an excellent precaution." Having one's own sheets would provide excellent assurances that the strange bed one is using is indeed a fresh change. Though it would require additional luggage, to be sure. For it is, "Better to be without sense than to misapply it..."

I love how the various quotes are taken from her published works and letters she exchanged with her sister. These quotes are then divided into eight sections based on the feelings that they project or elicit. Keep this close at hand, it is sure to a conversation starter.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

Thank-you to Hampton Roads Publishing for the review copy of Jane Austen’s Little Book of Wisdom by Andrea Kirk Assaf.

Do you have a favorite quote by an author? I love quotes.

Jane Austen is one of my favorite authors. Her works are timeless. She writes such vivid characters that I still recognize them in my friends and family. Her writing is witty, funny, and true to life. She is the perfect author to use to create a book of quotes.

Jane Austen’s Little Book of Wisdom is the perfect gift for your Jane Austen loving friend or family member. The quotes in this book are either Jane Austen’s direct thoughts from letters, poems, etc, or they are quotes from some of her best fictional creations. In the introduction, it discusses Jane Austen’s life briefly and how the book is set-up. The quotes are categorized in different themes such as “love and longing,” “friendship,” “life, death, and spirituality,” etc.

Some of my favorite quotes:
“If I loved you less, I might be able to talk about it more.”

“To be fond of dancing was a certain step towards falling in love.”

“Friendship is certainly the finest balm for the pangs of disappointed love.”

“We do not look into our great cities for our best morality.”

Overall, Jane Austen’s Little Book of Wisdom is a fun book to read some of Austen’s most memorable quotes.

This little book (about 5 inches square) has over 300 pages of quotes from the incomparable Jane Austen! They are from all her major works, poetry, and personal letters. The quotes are divided into eight categories, and it has been a joy to flip through and find nuggets of inspiration, humor, and wit. One from Pride and Prejudice that applies to my most social daughter is, "There is nothing so bad as parting with one's friends. One seems too forlorn without them." It made me chuckle since she is constantly asking for playdates- even when she has just finished one! The complete works of Jane Austen are listed at the end of the book, including her lesser known writings, and I was surprised to discover several blank pages decorated with a sweet filigree border for the reader to write in- for journaling thoughts, more quotes, etc. This lovely book would make the perfect gift for Austen-lovers!

This beautifully written book is filled with quotes from her literary works, letters, poems, and personal prayers. The book is divided into seven different themes each with quotes from her various works.

I have found myself sneaking away to read the quotes that were both familiar to me and many that I was just discovering! The format of one quote per page made it easy to read and reflect on. It is simply delightful.

This is the perfect book for anyone who is a Jane Austen fan, loves quotes, or enjoys great literature. The small and friendly size of the book makes it perfect to put in a cozy place to enjoy. I have mine on an end table next to my favorite chair. I highly recommend Jane Austen’s Little Book Of Wisdom.

All those who follow me are aware of my immense admiration for Jane Austen. This book is a treasure trove of Austen’s wonderful wit and wisdom.

This book may be small in size, but its contents are incredibly powerful.

I enjoy flipping through its pages at random and discovering what Jane has to say about love, friendship, society, and various other topics.

Occasionally, her writing is humorous, but at other times, it is thought-provoking and causes me to reflect on the meaning of life.

For all Janeites out there, this book is a must-have as it is impeccably edited.

I found myself reading through it and finding a variety of things that made me smile.

Sometimes it was a favorite line from an Austen novels that took me back to my favorite scenes and characters.

Then again sometimes it was a personal excerpts from a letter that have access a little deeper into Austen’s character.

I found more of a love for her stories and more and more of a kindred spirit in Jane Austen with each reading.

This is the perfect gift for any Austen lover.

Maybe it's better in a paper form versus electronic? Still, with just various quotes excerpted from Jane Austen's various works and letters, I was hoping for some pretty illustrations or fancy script... Considering the fact that one can just look for an appropriate Austen quote on any internet search engine, there isn't much else to recommend this book unfortunately.
