This is a revised edition of Sorcerer's Secrets. If you have the previous book it is not worth buying. If you have the previous edition it is probably not worth spending more money on. It was revised in the easiest way, by appending notes at the end of the sections, rather than actually rewriting them-which would have been a much better approach, at least in my opinion. If you don't have a copy, go for it. I do like Jason Miller's take on things.

No doubt, it’s an interesting book on operative magic. It doesn’t just explain solid foundations for practice, it lays out an entire strategic system. It’s not just about lighting a candle and saying three words — it’s about taking action and supporting the rituals. In that sense, I think it’s a great book.

The downside? Several chapters are exactly the same as in other books by the same author, which gets a bit tiring, reading the same thing over and over again. If I had to criticize something, that would be it: repeated chapters across multiple books from the same writer.

Having approached a number of books on Magick in the past, I think is hands down one of the best I’ve read. What I deeply appreciate from Miller’s approach is his view that Magick should be ACTUALLY functional and not just some form of religion, self-help, or woo-woo spiritual stand in. While you can certainly tell he’s literate and experienced with a number of occult systems, it’s clear he is not trying to “win” you to any of them, except in so far as the rituals and practices WORK.

Aside: Little background, I’m a practicing Catholic (obviously not traditional in a serious sense, and on top of that I’m an active gay man) but as someone who’s always been intrigued by the occult and Magick, I’ve struggled to get past a lot of those writers and occultists who smuggle in their obvious magico-religious beliefs (read Wicca) on the one hand or the woo-woo types who just take Magick and the occult as a self help, doesn’t-matter-if-it-works type of spirituality. I came to Jason Miller recently through Chaweon Koo, an atheist witch whose social media content has intrigued me for years.

If you’re looking for an intro to Magick or a book that just gives a serious approach to the subject and practice, this is hands down the best I’ve read so far.

Miller not only outlines a baseline of magick and spiritual practice everyone interested in the craft should follow, but then provides a thorough and thoughtful consideration of how to move forward in one’s development as a sorcerer. His philosophy that magick should actually WORK and how it works is incredibly helpful in orienting your mind to approaching the subject and I am grateful to have finally come across another author/practitioner (Chaweon Koo being the other) that makes what has seemed obscure in a lot of magical writing, clear.

This new guise of the well known and loved "The Sorcerer's Secrets" from 2009, comes with a certain elegance and style that occult sections all around the world desperately need. The books strikes with an alluring new cover and helpful new commentary by the author at the end of each chapter. We already saw that with the previous book that author Miller did with Weiser Books - "Protection & Reversal Magick". But while the new commentary of the previous book felt like something Miller did out of courtesy, this one is indeed insightful and manages to bring additional value to a well known material. While the changes are very helpful, I firmly believe that the new edition's best characteristic is its quality as a source material for occult practitioners. In a time when we're witnessing another grandiose revival of the interest in magic, we truly need books like that to set the standard and rise above the generic "Witchcraft 101" books publishing houses are drowning us in. Overall "Real Sorcery" is a book that every practitioner should read at least once in their lifetime.
