Batcat

Rate this book
First in a full-color graphic novel series for emerging readers about accepting yourself and others from up-and-coming author-illustrator Meggie Ramm, creator of the comic strip The Littlest Dungeon Guard and cohost of the Pop! Whiz! Bang! comics podcast.

Batcat loves being all alone in their home on Spooky Island. Up in their tree house, they pass the time playing video games and watching TV. But when Batcat suddenly finds themself haunted by an annoying, ice cream–stealing ghost, they visit the local Island Witch for a spell to remove their ghastly guest permanently!

With their Ghost-B-Gone spell in hand, Batcat travels across Spooky Island to gather ingredients—to the Cavernous Caves where the bats tell them they’re too round to be a bat, and to the Whispering Cemetery where the cats will help only if they commit to being a true cat. But Batcat is neither and that’s what makes them special, right?

From up-and-coming author Meggie Ramm comes a sweet and fun story about accepting yourself when you’re perfectly in between here and there.

Oh my gosh, this was SO CUTE! I love bats and cats (they're 2 of my 3 favorite animals!), so a critter that's 50% bat, 50% cat was guaranteed to be right up my alley, but I wasn't expecting to LOVE this storyline so much. 💖

Batcat is an introverted, grouchy little thing who just wants to spend all of their time gaming and snacking, but that gets interrupted when a friendly ghost shows up and starts intruding on their "me time". Batcat decides to enlist the help of the local witch to make a spell to get rid of the ghost, but it sends them on a journey of finding not only 3 mystical items, but also finding out a lot about who they are as the one and only Batcat!

I loved the moral here—that nobody is limited to being just one thing and we should always be ourselves—and of course I was all warm and fuzzy over the sweet friendship that began to bloom in the end of the story. I'm so glad this is intended to be a series because I need more, and I've even pre-ordered a finished copy for my kid because I know he'll love this, too!

Thank you to the publisher for the review copy! All thoughts are honest and my own.

Representation: Batcat uses they/them pronouns (the author is nonbinary so I'm assuming this is intended as a very casual way of pointing out that being "more than one thing" is okay when it comes to genders, too!)

Content warnings for: cutesy depictions of ghosts, skeletons, spooky caves, and graveyards

This was so stinking cute! The cover of Batcat definitely drew me in to wanting to read it but the story inside was so charming. We follow Batcat who uses they/them pronouns and enjoys living alone. However, one day they find that a ghost begins to haunt them. They decide to visit the neighborhood witch to find a spell to get rid of the ghost. The witch then sends them on this extensive journey to find these ingredients for the spell. Along the way, Batcat is made to feel as though they aren’t “bat” enough or “cat” enough leading them to understanding that there is probably more to the ghost than meets the eye. There is clearly a connection between this story and those that identity as gender non-conforming. These are the types of books that I love to see where kids get the chance to understand that being yourself is enough. With such a beautiful storyline and beautiful art, this is one that you don’t want to miss.

This magical, brightly-colored tale follows Batcat, a creature of comfort, who is driven out of their cozy home by an annoyingly friendly ghost. On their quest, Batcat is forced to face some of their deepest fears (the dark, being eaten) and some of their biggest questions: are they more a bat, or more a cat? Readers of all ages who have wondered about their own place in a world keen on dividing things into categories will relate to this quandary, and delight in the playful ways that Batcat defines themself outside of the binary. I got to read an advanced copy of this adorable book because it was written by a dear friend. Yes, I am biased, but I loved this story and highly recommend people check it out when it is released in March of 2023, or preorder it now!

I first chose Batcat because bats and cats are two of my favorite things. The art style drew me in and was the cutest thing. But once i started reading and seeing Batcat struggle with not being bat enough or cat enough. The way the author uses Batcat to explain being nonbinary was brilliant. As a parent of two gender nonconforming children this book was everything my kids needed. I love this book and will be purchasing all of the copies for all of the kids in my life.

5 stars!

Batcat has a ghost problem and needs to go on an epic journey to get rid of it.
With the understanding that this book is written for kids under the age of 10, this book is pretty great. I read it with my 5 year old daughter. She became a big fan of Batcat. The messages in this book are great for all people to learn from.

Welcome to the neighborhood, Batcat! Full disclosure: I may or may not personally know the author, but this graphic novel is genuinely adorable, fun, inclusive, and uplifting. It also taught me what a group of cats is called!

“Let us ask you thusly, would you rather be one fantastical thing—or the wonderful combination of two fantastical things? You do not have to be one thing or the other.”

'It sounds like you've lose your catness. And need help connecting to your true self.'
'Look, I'm sort of already on a mission. And I don't have time for a side quest—'

Who would have thought I'd end up relating to a dramatic, grouchy, introvert Batcat akdldgf but I do because all Batcat wants is to be left alone all day every day. However, when a ghost decides to haunt Batcat in their humble abode AND eat all their ice cream, Batcat decides to seek out the local witch for a spell because leaving pointed notes is definitely /not/ working. Thus begins an epic journey for ingredients that takes Batcat from the caves where bats live to the cemetery where the cats live and finally to the top of a mountain where a family of griffins reside

From Batcat using they/them pronouns to the core of the story being that it's okay to be more than one thing, Batcat is not only fun and jokes but also a very important story about knowing who you are is enough and being okay with it. Oh and friendship! I'm so glad this is a series because Batcat adventures are the shit, TBH

The art is so visually appealing even with an almost overuse of bright colors which is very Batcat of it, heh

This book, Batcat, was absolutely adorable! Despite book being grayscale when I read it, I loved the main character Batcat. Describing him as a cute, pink mixed animal hybrid who loves video games, TV, and more, was very relatable with introverts who just wanna be left alone. I thought the storyline was cute and well thought about considering it is a kid's story talking about non-binary themes. It took me about 20 pages to understand what the book's theme was about discussing non-binary people to a younger audience. I thought it was very well-written to talk about with kids in way that they would understand while also still having a good storyline to follow. I cannot wait for this book to be published and come out in color. I think it would be a great book to include for many different public and school libraries for kids that are curious.

Really cute graphic novel!
I love the message presented in this book about how you should just be yourself and not care what others think. It was wholesome along with the art style being charming. Very inclusive novel that I think many children would enjoy.

This is the cutest comic about being yourself and how you don’t have to be just one thing in life; you can be many things.

This really is over-the-top, ridiculously adorable and I relate to Batcat who just wants to live alone with no one bothering them or hogging the remote.
Reading this did make me feel hungry, though.

A joyful, offbeat quest story. Batcat (they/them) has been tasked by the local witch to track down three ingredients for a spell that will rid them of the annoyingly friendly, snack-gobbling ghost that has taken up residence in their home. Their travels take them to a cavernous cave full of bats (who soon shame them for not being “bat enough”), a dusty graveyard full of cats (not “cat enough”), and a nest of griffins—part-lion, part-birds who accept and affirm Batcat’s bothness and neitherness. This summary is heavy-handed, but *Batcat* is not, which is why it’s so lovely. One doesn’t *have* to make the connection between Batcat and nonbinary people—I don’t think I fully caught it the first time through—and so many kids’ books just whomp the reader with poor analogies and very little to offer besides just “being a book with a nonbinary protagonist,” as though that is enough of a story. *Batcat* offers charming and funny asides, fun details (bats hate ghosts because echolocation doesn’t pick up on them and they end up unintentionally flying through them, which looks like it feels like walking through a spiderweb), and bright funky colors and illustrations.

Batcat is part bat, part cat, and 100% annoyed by the new ghost who has moved into their treehouse. They go to see the witch who sends them on a journey to caves, a graveyard, and a griffins’ lair to gather ingredients for a spell.

Some very funny parts and a cute ending. Also appreciated the pigpen but the Ls were Cs.

I mean, first of all. Half-bat, half-cat? Where could you go wrong?!

This was very cute though! Just a nice little story about accepting who you are, and I loved the fourth wall breaks.

They're a bat! They're a cat! They're pink and round!

This sweet story wouldn't have felt out of place as an early reader of yesteryear, but now everything is a comic! (Not complaining, just observing.) Batcat gets a ghost (that they don't like). Batcat visits a witch (to get rid of the ghost). A Batcat goes on a quest (and feels like they don't fit anywhere). Batcat makes a new friend (the ghost, naturally). Simple, straightforward, and fun.

Received an ARC of this book! I loved the story so much! It was very cute and has a great moral to it…just be you, you don’t need to be what others tell you you should be. The cartoons are adorable and I think this book would be a great hit to any student/child that likes Dog Man or graphic novels in general!

I received a copy from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
They're half-cat and half-bat who loves pizza, ice cream, and video games. Batcat lives in a treehouse all by themselves until, one day, a ghost arrives, wanting to haunt it. Soon, the ghost takes control over everything in the house, so Batcat visits the local witch to find a spell to get rid of the ghost. Thus, Batcat goes on a quest to find three ingredients for the witch's spell. Can Batcat find all three in time?
Have you ever felt one thing didn't define you? Batcat is like that, being part bat and part cat. A rewarding graphic novel shows readers you can be whatever you want. I enjoyed the little quests for Batcat and the different creatures they faced. I own a few cats, so I know how finicky they can be, but I sure don't own any bats, though. And that surprise ending for both Ghost and Batcat? Just wonderful. The comic wraps up nicely with touching morals and other smiles. Book 2?
