An inspiring memoir of promises kept, overcoming obstacles, and what it means to sacrifice for others, written by a Special Warfare Operator with the US Air Force.
When Israel “DT” Del Toro, Jr.'s Humvee rolled over a roadside improvised explosive device in Afghanistan, he had one thought as he lost I have to keep the promise I made to my dad. DT was orphaned at the age of fourteen, and on the night before his father died, he repeated the promise his dad had required of “Take care of your brothers and sisters.”
Throughout his childhood and into adulthood, DT indeed looked after his younger brother and sisters, even to his own detriment and sacrifice. When he enlisted in the Air Force, progressing in ranks as a skilled marksman calling airstrikes, his promise extended to his brothers and sisters in the Air Force—his fellow soldiers and brothers-in-arms.
When DT was injured in action, he lay in a coma for three months with third-degree burns on 80 percent of his body. He nearly died three times, and doctors predicted—if he survived—he would forever breathe with a respirator and never walk again. DT pushed through every limit to his full recovery, and he became the first 100 percent disabled veteran to reenlist in the Air Force.
DT's promise to his dad extends now to his fellow wounded warriors throughout the world as he advocates for awareness and affecting change in public policy for wounded, injured, and ill soldiers. He is a patriot who has kept his promise and changed the world with the spirit of his heart, soul, body, and mind.
This inspiring memoir chronicles an extraordinary life. SMSgt Israel Del Toro, Jr. lost his father young and took care of his brothers and sisters when his mother lost her way. He eventually joined the Air Force, and he was severely injured in Afghanistan, with burns on over 80% of his body. Given only a 15% chance to live and told he would never be able to go back into the military, he defied all odds. While he was battling back from injury, his wife was defying odds of her own as she battled immigration laws and language barriers to get to her husband's side and to take care of everyday struggles once she arrived. I am also the spouse of a retired Air Force Senior NCO, and I salute her.
I could not put this book down and read it in one sitting. It is a reminder to those in difficult circumstances that we should never, ever give up. It is proof positive that you can come out even stronger on the other side of hard things that have happened to you. It's also a reminder that when someone tells you that you "can't," you just might prove them wrong with determination and hard work. I'm so happy to have read it.
I received a free copy of this book from St. Martin's Press via Netgalley. My review is voluntary and the opinions expressed are my own.
TITLE: A PATRIOT'S PROMISE: Protecting My Brothers, Fighting for My Life, and Keeping My Word AUTHOR: Senior Master Sergeant Israel "DT" Del Toro, Jr PUB DATE: 07/04/2023 Now Available
An inspiring memoir of promises kept, overcoming obstacles, and what it means to sacrifice for others, written by a Special Warfare Operator with the US Air Force.
When Israel “DT” Del Toro, Jr.'s Humvee rolled over a roadside improvised explosive device in Afghanistan, he had one thought as he lost consciousness: I have to keep the promise I made to my dad. DT was orphaned at the age of fourteen, and on the night before his father died, he repeated the promise his dad had required of him: “Take care of your brothers and sisters.” When DT was injured in action, he lay in a coma for three months with third-degree burns on 80 percent of his body. He nearly died three times, and doctors predicted―if he survived―he would forever breathe with a respirator and never walk again. DT pushed through every limit to his full recovery, and he became the first 100 percent disabled veteran to reenlist in the Air Force. THOUGHTS: As I read DT’s story, I immediately thought of a few words that described him: Survivor, Strong, Dedicated, Determined, a Hero, a Warrior, a Son, a Brother, Inspiring.
I had no idea the sacrifices our soldiers have gone through - go through in order for all of us to have our freedom, our life in peace and prosperity. This story is one that should be read by all to celebrate a life of courage, perseverance, and resilience. A truly inspiring memoir.
I am late to the party but started and finished your fascinating story in one sitting. If you haven’t read it, I highly recommend “A Patriot’s Promise”. You will laugh, cry, get angry and find motivation with each chapter!
My favorite quote “Your job as a leader is to make things better for those who come after you, even though you may never see any of the benefits”.
Those are the kind of leaders we need in the world and one I will strive to be.
"There are parts of this story I would have chosen, and there are parts that I wouldn't have. But they all belong to me now. And I don't regret any of my choices." This is an empowering story, one that has me awestruck for several moments. Del Toro writes his story, and he claims it. Even when he spoke to his father shortly before he passed away, he took taking care of his family seriously. He did everything he could, and despite his efforts, he lost his mother while he was in his teens as well. He was fighting from the get-go, and he still worked hard for everything! In his military career in the beginning he sacrificed many things including time with his wife and child, he was at the point where his wife wanted him out of the military to be with them or she was done. Then, when his accident happened he was still taking charge and trying to get everyone the aid they needed. Soon he began his journey to healing, but it was not smooth sailing for him. His struggles and setbacks affected him like they did everyone else. His determination and love for his family and military family kept him going and striving for a better tomorrow! This is an inspiring empowering story for the masses that encourages you to keep taking that step towards a better tomorrow even when you feel like you can not keep going! This is a magnificent story of an outstanding man who encourages everyone to do better, to be better than we are, and to aid those we can even when we feel we have nothing to give.
What an inspiration for us all. I laughed and wept silently all the while pulling for D T. A great read! Thank you for your service and sacrifices Sir!
RICK “SHAQ” GOLDSTEIN SAYS: AS A PROUD-HONORABLY-DISCHARGED-VIET-NAM-ERA-UNITED-STATES-VETERAN… IT’S DISAPPOINTING WHAT EXISTS IN THE PENTAGON AND WHITE HOUSE… TODAY… TO CREATE … AN ETERNAL GROWTH OF PRIDE IN A VETERANS HEART… ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- And then I read this book written by ISRAEL “DT” DEL TORO, JR. A U.S. AIR FORCE, SENIOR MASTER SERGEANT (RET.) It is made clear early on… and throughout… that DT… doesn’t consider himself a hero… nor does he want to be called one. He vetoed the word hero being used in the title. As a “BROTHER-U.S.-VETERAN”… I totally understand… and will honor his request…
But… what DT certainly is… and what a battalion of Army, Air Force, Navy, Marine… and Coast Guards… couldn’t refrain me from screaming from the top of the highest mountains… and the lowest valleys… is that DT… is a sacred… hallowed… role model… for the entire human race! That includes every man… woman… and child.
When DT was fourteen… his beloved Father who was dying was on the last phone call Father and son would ever have… his Father said… “PROMISE ME YOU WILL ALWAYS TAKE CARE OF YOUR BROTHER AND SISTERS.” DT replied… ‘What? Si, yes of course, Papi. Why would you even ask me that?” “Promise me, Junior, Prometeme.” “Si Papi.” “Lo dices. Say it”
“I REPEATED THE WORDS HE NEEDED TO HEAR. “I PROMISE TO ALWAYS TAKE CARE OF MY BROTHER AND SISTERS.”
Years later DT with pride joined The United States Air Force… and if you have ever served our country… you know your “teammates” become your family… and DT… as he rose through the ranks… adopted his family of teammates into the same protective grasp of the promise he made to his dying Father…”I PROMISE TO ALWAYS TAKE CARE OF MY BROTHER AND SISTERS!”
And then… on that fateful day in Afghanistan in 2005 his Humvee rolled over a buried roadside land mine and exploded. “By the time he gave his last command, he could barely breathe. More than 80 percent of his body was severely burned, and he lost all his fingers on his left hand. Doctors gave him a grim prognosis: they said he would never walk or breathe properly on his own. He faced only a 15 percent chance of survival and the likelihood that he would spend the rest of his life on a respirator. When he woke up from a coma THAT LASTED FOUR MONTHS.”
He almost died three times… THE FIRST TIME HE SAW HIS OWN FACE… HE WANTED TO DIE!
And here is where the real… Nitti… gritty… heart and soul… gut wrenching … utter definition of becoming a role model for humanity… really begins!
Now… I’ll introduce you to another glory of DT’s life… his angelic wife Carmen. What she went through… to be able to persevere… first just to be able to get by his side in the intensive care unit… was heart breaking. While he was on the front-lines… she was still not an American Citizen and was living in Mexico with their young son. What it took her… with barely a few dollars… a weak grasp of the English language… and all types of hoops to jump through and obstacles at the border and everywhere in between to get to the hospital in Texas where DT was being cared for by the best of the best medical specialists. Readers will literally become one with Carmen… as you feel so hopeless and almost want to transport yourself into the book to lend a hand… and a hug… to help her carry on.
President George W. Bush came and presented DT with the Purple Heart while DT was in a coma… so DT never even knew it happened. Before the President’s arrival… there were a list of prerequisites as to how his visit would be carried out. One of the stated rules was that DT’s body had to be completely covered so all the (to be frank… nauseating) wounds wouldn’t be visible. Carmen refused… saying she wanted the President to see what DT has suffered. What is one of the high points of this story… is as I have always personally heard… Is that George W. Bush… always… always… visited the wounded troops… no matter how severe… AND WITHOUT REPORTERS AND PHOTO OPS… as many other political and Hollywood types always do. DT and the President actually became good friends… and even became comfortable enough… to always “BUST EACH OTHERS CHOPS”… as good friends are wont to do.
To me… one of the best parts of the storytelling… is that the author’s stylistic tone… never changes throughout the book. There’s a certain straight forward… honesty… strength… everyday-man… quality… that the skin on the outside… may have changed… but the heart and soul… on the inside… was always there… never changed… but now circumstances… have provided an outlet for the world to soak it in!
So… this wonderful… strong… enduring… human being… after skirting death…innumerable times… and continually facing the challenge and the emotional battle… if dying would be better than living… instead of never walking… he wins medals in international special sports events… he does not need a respirator… he gives speeches to thousands upon thousands of people… he’s got a beautiful loving wife… who never left his side… a strong son… who has been raised with the same principles as his Dad… who is a universal role model… for the human race…
Who literally has Presidents and Princes that call him “Friend”…
And there’s only one way I know to end this review… (other than I have to “X” out one word… so my review will be published… A WORD THAT MY MAN DT DOES **NOT** EDIT OUT IN HIS SPEECHES… EVEN IF IN FRONT OF ROYALTY) ….and that’s with DT’s ubiquitous final sentence of his speeches…
***STAY STRONG… FINISH STRONG… AND NEVER ******* QUIT!***
P.S. One final comment from DT: “People like to call me a hero, but I’m just a dude who had a bad day at work.” ---- Amen Brother!
I enjoyed as an audiobook narrated by Roger Wayne who is excellent, perfect pacing, clarity, and Spanish, highly recommend.
Has been so lovely to read on this celebratory, Day of Independence, U.S.A.’s birthday, 4th of July.
The Story I love DT’s story. I will say I did cry, beginning, middle, and end. Hearing more of the entirety of service, battle injury, camaraderie, love story, and family. I hadn’t heard to full detail completely so to read more in book form was very encouraging.
The setting up of atmosphere, culture, persons, situational encounters, and everything in-between from military service, to duties, all the way to expert marksmanship and paratrooper, to family dynamics and complexities. Highlighting both highs and lows, obstacles and all, celebrations in spite of favorable, unfavorable circumstances, worst of tragedies, the endurance to keep pressing on.
A beautiful family of man, wife, and child. Marital bliss, integrity, test of strength and commitment loyalty, generational impact, and keeping promise.
Inhalation and cutaneous burns, complications, impressive recovery of 80% with 3rd degree burns with such grim prognosis. Enduring physical, mental, and emotional pain. Including deepest pain in other circumstances. The difficulty in decision-making, then barriers, 100% disability, then onto re-enlistment.
Turned into compelling voice and advocacy. With a wonderfully dedicated piece for even the less visible wounds of war. Struggles of proper accommodation for disabilities, and notably as seen through COVID-19 pandemic.
The piece about healing that comes with sharing story.
I loved the outlook of enthusiasm and opportunity, taking on the chance to making something easier for someone else, to not make it harder, to be someone’s angel.
And fun humor mixed in as well, hilarious sense of humor actually, I laughed so hard.
The Writing The writing was well-done. Excellent storytelling. Super engaging. Organized well chronologically, with some recollection, intrigue, and surprises as told along the way.
The descriptions were transportive. From Chicago to Mexico, to active service mission in Afghanistan, to the long road of recovery in hospital, rehabilitation, and competitive sports. People as characterized who have crossed paths along the way.
Enjoyed the integration of Spanish, and the writing style with interpretation of how it was formatted into the story.
I also appreciated inclusion from wife’s perspective and highlighting her ways in which she shined. Her continued support and hope, even through her own life perspective and journey, the hardships, still showing grace and standing by in love. Even the tidbits here and there of memories of community and the picturesque of plaza, changes brought about by military life, then of anticipation of the unknown. Even hair dye style mishaps, cuisine, and certain aspects of discipline. All the relatable and familial culture.
A Patriot’s Promise is so much more than the story of an incredibly brave man. It begins with a young man’s home life, his promise to his father, the death of his mother, and the choices that he made along his life’s journey. Choices that made him who he is today. A man of influence and courage.
This captivating story caught my attention from the first page. It is the story of a man who was severely injured when his Humvee rolled over a roadside improvised explosive device in Afghanistan burning over 80 percent of his body. It’s the story of a man who was given a 15% chance of living, and then, most likely he would be unable to walk and have to be on a ventilator. But more than the things that happened to him, I saw a man who all through his life took control and made choices. I saw a brave man who lived his life. He didn't let circumstances control his life.
As many of us know who have relied on caregivers, DT’s wife should not be overlooked. This brave lady stood beside her man through everything. And if you’ve ever traveled with a little one, DT’s wife experienced things that would throw most of us into a panic attack. She stood in line for hours at airports, battling immigration, and going through the embassy. This happened with no help, limited English, a three-year-old. and knowing that she was heading to meet her wounded warrior who was being flown to the US from Afghanistan. She had been waiting for years to come from Mexico to the USA as a soldier's wife, but at the time he was wounded, the paperwork still hadn't come through. This beautiful woman was an inspiration, too.
This is a book that spoke to me in so many ways.
My Concerns None
Final Thoughts From an early age Del Toro’s decisions exhibited the type of person he was. As his story unfolded, I continually wondered if I would have taken the high road or handed out invitations to a never-ending pity party.
A truly inspiring memoir.
I received a gifted copy of this book from St. Martin's Press. I was under no obligation to post a positive review.
This is DT, Del Toro, Jr. life, and all he has gone through in his life. At 14, his father passed away, and he promised his father that he would take care of his brothers and sisters. He did, and he joined the military by joining the US Air Force. He was deployed several times, and it was harder after getting married and having a son, but he was ordered to go to Afghanistan, and it was there that the Humvee rolled over a roadside improvised explosive device. His last thought before losing consciousness was he had to take care of his brothers and sisters. His brothers and sisters now included his military family. When he woke from being in a coma for three months, this was the beginning of his journey of keeping his promise. They told him he would never walk, would be on a respirator for the rest of his life, but he fought every challenge that he faced, and he became the first 100 percent disabled veteran to reenlist in the Air Force. This is his life, his challenges, finding the strength to never give up, and discovering the life he will have. He now advocates for other Veterans, that have visible and invisible disabilities. "He is a patriot who has kept his promise and changed the world with the spirit of his heart, soul, body, and mind." I received an ARC from St. Martin's Press through NetGalley. I am thankful he had the courage to write and tell his story because people just living life today, will benefit from reading this story. When they think it is hopeless and want to give up, this might give them the courage to never give up. Thank you for your service and your courage.
I’ve know Israel since he was a teenager. He attended Providence Catholic High School in New Lenox, Illinois, where I was a teacher for many years. I remember him as being smart, funny and nice….like most teenagers are if you give them a minute. I recently went to his ‘meet~greet~book signing’ at the Village Hall in New Lenox Illinois. His wife, Carmen, was right next to him. Not a surprise. My friend, Mike, (also a teacher from Providence who taught Israel his junior year) was with me and we had a nice conversation with Israel and Carmen. When we took a pic with him, he said ‘I hope you guys enjoy the book’ and something to the effect of …don’t let me know if you think the book isn’t written well. Too funny. Then he said well, if you say it’s not good…..I’ll say that I had bad teachers in high school. He’s still the same smart, funny and nice person I knew all those years ago. I could totally hear his ‘voice’ in this narrative….this very authentic telling of his journey. Israel not only survived what most people could not have….he took everything that happened ….ALL the hardships, sorrows, excruciating pain, joys, goodness, and palpable love he experienced and wove them into the most beautiful and STRONG tapestry of who he is today….with a very strong thread of acknowledging and appreciating everything that his family ~ especially his adorable wife and sweet son ~ and his comrades in the service did ~ and still do~ for him. If you read this, you’ll probably never think when you go to bed at night, that you ‘had a bad day.’ Or say….’Why do bad things happen to me?’
I don't read as much nonfiction as I used to. After reading this I know I need to make a point to do so. Though I've never heard of the wounded vet this book is about I'm very impressed with his life story. Coming for very humble beginnings, his father died when he was very young, but he made a promise to his father that he would always take care of his siblings and he did, putting his life on hold until they were old enough to not need his constant care. His mother also left him and his sibling's way to early. Sent to live with his grandparents the siblings didn't have an easy life, but he made sure they had all they needed. Joining the Air Force, he has major burns over 80% of his body, with a 15 % chance of survival it goes to show the type of resilience he has. He became the first 100 percent disabled veteran to reenlist in the Air Force. Though many of the changes have come too late for him he advocates for policy changes and awareness for wounded and ill soldiers. Many have said to him his public speaking has given them the encouragement they needed to face what they are going through. He did this all for his wife and son they are his inspiration. This is not the type of book I normally read but it's so uplifting and inspirational that I'll be reading more books of a similar type. Highly recommended!
I was given a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions expressed are my own.
Commitment, honor, determination. "Stay Strong, Finish Strong" Life for DT wasn't bad until his father died. From then on it was a series of almost impossible challenges. He joined the US Air Force and married an incredible woman. Then came bureaucratic challenges, Afghanistan, 80% burns, even more bureaucratic challenges, and the incredible challenges of rehab. No punches pulled, DT spells out for the layman all the things that devastating burns steal from a person, just as his wife presented them to then President GW Bush (who became a good and snarky friend) when he came to present DT and others with the Purple Heart. In spite of everything, DT argued and returned to active duty in a very public capacity, participated in the Warrior Games and the Invictus Games, and made another snarky good friend. Prince Harry. Now he continues to be front and center for all who have invisible as well as visible disabilities. "My disability does not define me" We salute this honorable man! It's a tough read for anyone in the medical/nursing field, military, or anyone with a comprehensive imagination. Read it anyway and become a better person. I requested and received an EARC from St. Martin's Press via NetGalley. Thank you!
**Review: A Patriot's Promise by Israel Del Toro**
I was pleasantly surprised when I received *A Patriot's Promise* by Israel Del Toro, especially since I had missed the email notifying me that I had won it. From the moment I picked up this book, I knew I was in for something special.
Del Toro's story is nothing short of remarkable. It’s a powerful tale of defying the odds, demonstrating incredible determination, persistence, courage, and strength. DT’s journey is one of a strong soul fighting through life’s toughest challenges and refusing to give up, no matter the obstacles in his path.
Reading about his experiences resonated deeply with me, particularly because I, too, have faced severe injuries and disability due to a workplace incident.
I believe this book found its way to me at the right time. Del Toro’s story is a testament to the human spirit's resilience, and it reminded me that even in our darkest moments, we can find the strength to keep pushing forward.
*A Patriot's Promise* is an inspiring and deeply moving read, and I’m grateful to have had the opportunity to experience DT’s journey. It’s a story that will stay with me for a long time.
Wow, what an incredible and inspiring memoir! I listened to the audio in 2 days. It was completely captivating! I laughed, I cried and I celebrated the victories. I highly recommend this book that comes out on July 4th, 2023!
A Patriot’s Promise is about fighting for survival, never giving up and keeping your promises. Israel Deltoro faced the worst case scenario when he was nearly killed during his tour in Afghanistan. His injuries were so severe, he spent months comatose in the hospital and was not expected to survive. Israel’s heart and determination along with support from his family and friends led him to take the actions necessary to return to an active lifestyle. Not only did Israel overcome the impossible, he became a motivational speaker and advocate for injured veterans and those with disabilities. Well done Israel! 👏🏻🥰
Thank you to @stmartinspress , @macmillan.audio and @idt21 for this advanced copy in exchange for an honest review!
I thought I wouldn't have time to read this book but ultimately was able to finally get to it and I am so glad I did. I have so much respect for Del Toro Jr and all he had to endure in his career. I had chills and held my breath as he encountered what he had to. Talk about survivor and dedication!! He desperately wanted to live up to his promise to his father and he did what he could to do that, even after enduring what he did... omg.. 3 months unconscious with burns covering most of his body. He is a man who can and should be held up to everyone, not just in the Armed Forces but in rehab facilities all over the world as "if you want it, you can make it happen.... because look at me!" I want to thank St. Martin's Press and NetGalley for the absolute privilege and honor to read this book about this remarkable man and wish to salute him for his courage and service to his country and family. All opinions are my own.
An inspring story of special op paratrooper, Israel "DT" Del Toro. The book covers his early life and how he became responsible for his siblings at the age of fourteen when his father passed and the sacrifices he made for family. DT was injured in Afghanistan when his Humvee rolled over a roadside IED. Suffering burns over 80% of his body, he was not expected to survive. With grit and determination, he overcame the odds with the support of his wife and compatriots. Along the way, he becomes an inspiration to other wounded veterans and also their advocate, fighting for better treatment for their injuries. Through the Warrior Games, he showed others what could be accomplished. #APatriotspromise #NetGalley
This is the story of SMSgt. Israel Del Toro, Jr and the struggles and triumphs he had. Injured with 80% of his body covered in burns he was told that his career had ended. This inspiring tale follows SMSgt Del Toro as he defies all odds and overcomes insurmountable trials. This book is hard to put down - I read it in one setting. Crying, laughing even becoming angry at some of the things he had to face. But in the end, I sat back and considered the fact that there are people like him in every branch.....so many untold stories. And as a mom of an Airman my heart ached at the possibilities of trials my own son could face.
Thanks to NetGalley and the author for this review copy in exchange for an honest reviw.
This is a concise, impactful book that offers inspiration and encouragement. Thank you for sharing your story and devoting your life to helping others. Thank you for your service to our country and for your sacrifice. Carmen shouldn't have had to face the bureaucratic red tape and all the unnecessary obstacles. Military spouses should have support and access all across the board so they can focus on important things. I appreciate that these issues were highlighted and you showed how amazing she is. There are many other interesting things here, like the treatment and recovery process of burn victims, the training and competitive opportunities for wounded athletes, the special influencers like Prince Harry who are working to improve veterans' lives.
With 3rd degree burns covering over 80% of his body after an explosion as the result of an IED in Afghanistan this is a story not just of survival but of deciding to make a difference in the world.
This is a well told story without a lot of excess detail that make it a great read. It will make you cringe, become angry, cry and inspire in an ongoing cycle of the journey from the edge of death to impacting family, friends, other military vets and far beyond.
It is also a look at the cost to our military when they are wounded, survive and yet face years of continuing impacts.
There is a lot to think about here that makes it great read!
SMSgt Del Toro’s story is inspirational. Full of emotion and the wisdom to never give up. I didn’t know who he was or his story when I heard him speak when he was still active duty. But—wow. His courage is a gift to us all, and now we have it for generations to come because of this book.
As a Veteran spouse who has caregiver for my husband—I want to say thank you. Your wife, Carmen, is an unstoppable force. I cried when I read how much she had to overcome. While I haven’t had near as many obstacles, I appreciate that both of you are making hurdles easier to overcome for those of us who come behind you.
I was privileged to read this ARC through NetGalley and I couldn't put it down. I was at the Orlando Invictus Games opening ceremony and heard Senior Master Sergeant Israel Del Toro, Jr speak. His story of bravery, resilience, courage and love brought me to tears and I haven't had a day go by that I haven't thought about him or told someone his story. To read the details of his life growing up, the hardships he endured both before enlisting and during was heart breaking. "DT" is an absolute hero and inspiration and I highly recommend everyone read his story.
I didn’t know what I was getting into when I saw this book advertised on Goodreads through email or the website I don’t remember which but I will say this book is for anyone who needs courage. If I could meet Del Toro, I would tell him thank you for your service. I was born with cerebral palsy. I know that’s not the same thing I just know he feels like to be challenged to be different. I am so glad I found this book and put it above everything else. I’m currently in a nursing home for respite care so it brought back memories.
It is absolutely gut wrenching what our service members go through. This book was an insight into many things, and surprise! Once again it offers an insight into the pure hell that many of our veterans have had to go through, or continue to go through. Covid, like everyone else, left him f _ _ _ _ _. It’s absolutely unbelievable the way people treated this gentleman in this situation and others. He took it with more grace than I think most could. DT is definitely an over comer, survivor, and fighter. The last chapter literally had me in tears.
A hero in so many ways. And there are heroes to be found in every aspect of his life and his torturous recovery from the horrific accident in Afghanistan. What a terrific wife to stand by him and fight for him through all of those months and years. Add to that the military officials and the medical personnel along with his buddies and teammates that came along side. But, in the end it was his willpower to live and be there for his son that carried him through. He deserves all the accolades medals and honors that have been bestowed upon him.
A Patriot's Promise is an incredible tale of bravery and determination. Del Toro's unwavering spirit is truly inspiring, as he overcomes seemingly insurmountable obstacles with grit and grace. This memoir is a testament to the power of the human spirit and the importance of never giving up. Del Toro's story is a shining example of what it means to be a true patriot, and his unwavering commitment to his brothers in arms is a testament to his character.
I am not completely sure why I added this book to my tbr since I typically avoid military books. After starting this book, I'm glad I didn't ignore this book. It's one that I couldn't put down even though at times I struggled with it emotionally which I guess that just shows how great this book is. Definitely recommend.
Thank you to NetGalley, the author and St. Martin's Press for providing me with an ARC copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This book and author were inspiring. He certainly went through quite a few challenges and very difficult things in his life. I think his attitude and strength were very admirable. I am impressed with his wife as well. The messages in the book were good reminders about how everyone is going through something, there are so many sacrifices being made by men and women and their families to keep America a great country. I didn’t feel like this was super politically biased. I would recommend it!
I received this book as part of a Goodreads giveaway.
This was an uplifting book about this veterans trials and tribulations. For me it was about the same as many other books like it, so nothing special but not bad. It is motivational and inspiring, so if you like that type of book you will definitely enjoy this.
Thanks Netgalley for allowing me to read this book. Israel had not had an easy life since he was in eighth grade. He made sure his younger siblings had everything they needed. When he joined the military he had no idea of what he was getting into. This book was an enlightening journey into the life of an individual serving our country.
The memoir of Israel Del Toro, Jr is a heartbreaking but beautiful story most would think of a man, but I see as a story of a family. Carmen is as amazingly strong woman! To come to a country where you can barely speak the language, and fight for your husband…even against his family. I am amazed all the time at peoples fight inside of themselves.
