Echika, burdened by her decision to hide the secret of Harold’s Laws of Respect, experiences a rapid loss of Brain Dive functionality. With her prospects of being reinstated as a Diver looking grim, Echika is assigned to her next case as a normal police investigator, only to find Harold working the same inquiry with the help of a new “genius” assistant. From there, the two former partners chase separate leads after a hacker known only as E, a self-styled mind reader who has been leaking classified Interpol information on a popular message board. But what is this mysterious figure really after, and why are they inciting their followers to violence?
So the whole premise of the plot is that there is someone named 'E' that is "posting conspiracy THEORIES" only the theories are real and the Cops wants to keep it covered up. The book goes to great lengths to say that 'E' is wrong and it's all lies when we've read the 2 books that say that "Nope, government really is covering this shit up." I hate that it tries to paint 'E' as a liar when it's not lying. Mind you all the attacks and stuff are mostly done by just the followers, with our perpetrator posting only a few. The book then gets gross by wanting to put a mentally broken man in jail for tweaking an open source AI and hating being shoved into a job he didn't want that lead to him having his mind screwed up. And the author can only say "Whelp the system has more pros than cons!!" Like I get it, you love how fucked up capitalism is. Also includes the mandatory damsled Hieda segment where Harold has to save her. Because we can't have strong women in Japanese light novels. Also there's Bigga and she... really doesn't do much. I honestly just don't really care for her because she doesn't really do much and is only there for an avenue to introduce more men for PLOT.
This isn't a CyberPUNK book it's a CyberSTATE book.
My favorite volume so far!! I really enjoyed learning more about the secondary characters too! Some aspects were predictable but not enough to keep me from the edge of my seat!
