If you are interested about Myofascial Release, starting to practice it or a patient of the work, I would highly recommend this book. Much of the wisdom in John Barnes' words apply's to the therapist or patient. This is not to say random readers wouldn't benefit as well.

This book offers the reader insight into Barnes approach to Myofascial Release, which is much more than just a manual therapy that can give the participant long term relief from chronic pain and other medical issues. It is a journey down the rabbit hole of Barnes experiences with this MFR(myofascial release) approach he pioneered and how it has shaped and continues to shape him.

There are many nuggets of wisdom that a patient or therapist can find and reap from in this book. Part of the book is insights Barnes offers, part of the book are words from his patients and therapists that convey their own experiences to Barnes method of MFR.

I am a massage therapist that practices Barnes method and this book has greatly enhanced my understanding of the work, my ability to connect with my clients, connecting with myself and additional wisdom every time I come back to reading this book a future time in conjunction with the flow of evolution in my life.

The book started out with a very logical explanation about how the body holds in tension, which in turn can result in pain. I was fascinated and intrigued, since I’d been living with debilitating pain for 2 years. I continued to read. Then the book got a little “out there” for my scientific, logic-minded brain to absorb. But I continued to read because there was something that was definitely resonating with me and my pain. I took from the book the parts that resonated with me at the time, and I’m thankful I did because Barnes’ method of myofascial release saved me from the horrible pain I’d been in for so long. Give it a chance. It was very helpful to me in understanding the mindbody connection as related to healing from chronic pain.

I definitely am looking forward to eventually attending one of John's MFR courses in person (when I can afford it), but this book gave a great perspective into the ideology, process, and thinking behind MFR.

Many of the therapists I work with are also extensively trained in MFR, so this gave me some great additional background into the ethos of the studio owner and how they all approach the healing process.

I admit I skimmed the last half of this book. I believe there are real benefits to myofascial release therapy, but this guy is just over the top. I couldn’t take him seriously.

This is a very unusual book. It bounces back and forth between the author's experience, his therapists' experiences, and his patient's experiences. It is very self-promoting and seems to glorify and advertise the author.

However, I gave the book three stars because if you really read it, there are good tidbits of information about the fascial system and fascia and how it works which are educational. I wish they were presented in a more coherent and readable format. I also wish an index had been included because it is impossible in this format to locate information again that you might want to review.

This is not by any means an instructional manual or educational textbook. It is more autobiographical than anything because it talks about how John Barnes developed Myofascial Release and his experiences.

I would not give this book to someone curious about Myofascial Release and wanting to know the scientific basis and how and why it works because some of the things the author says will stretch the credulity of the left brain. There is information here, but the reader needs to dig for it.

It is most definitely overpriced.

my physical therapist, who I go to for myofascial release, had me read this book. it's an easy quick read but is only relevant if you know about or are interested in learning about MFR. in any event, some of it makes you go, "seriously dude? i mean...SERIOUSLY?" because it's just a little too out there and unbelievable...but it was good enough to serve its purpose.

John Barnes is my genius savior. My healer. Oh, he has taught me so much about my broken body through his books and local therapists that follow his techniques. A bible of mine, I return to it time and time again.
