Twilight Language
TWILIGHT LANGUAGE is literally speaking looking at dimness. In these poems, language looks intentionally at the dimness of the pandemic era, the twilight faced by planet earth in the face of the raging climate crisis and the regular existential questions that seemingly are grappled with on a daily basis. 2022; Proverse Hong Kong
As I have been working on my poetry and reading as much as I can in the genre, I have been missing one very important element. That element is Indian poets who write in English. English is the only language I am fluent in reading, and definitely for writing. I could make a top list for most culture, except the one that I am a part of. (Before you direct me to Rupi Kaur - I will be writing a post on this another time - I am looking for authentic voices that recognize that that being Indian and experiences are different for each person). I "met" Vinita in a virtual workshop and found the way she lead the session was so engaging and fun. I started following her on Instagram and she reached out for me to review her book of poetry, Twilight Language.
I always find poetry a hard genre to rate because poetry and words, for me, are about emotion and if something resonates with me. Sometimes as a reader we may feel or see something the writer had not thought of, but it is still very real for us. Some of Vinita poems reminded me of chatting with my Bibi, when she was alive. There is this feeling of maternal connection, between the speaker and her mother, that feels relatable. And, something that I too had with my Bibi. While it is a particular thing to the speaker, it is written so you can feel that. While I have not visited the parts of India Vinita is from, I often felt like I could smell the sweet or tangy earth and see and touch nature. You don't have to be Indian to enjoy or understand any of these poems, but there is just that extra flavour if you are. This is a collection I will be recommending to me mom to read, as well as anyone that is looking for poems that fragrant and rich.
