Her Captain Returns

Rate this book
How could anything considered sinful feel so good? That is what Miss Corinne Claymore asked herself as she gave into the titillating suggestions of Captain Ryder Montgomery. Corinne never knew what she was getting into with her innocent flirtations with Ryder. Scandal ensues as they are discovered in an amorous embrace in the gardens at Lady Covington's ball. Corinne finds herself not only married to Ryder, but abandoned. A short letter tells her he will be gone for several years. Eight years pass while Ryder is on a secret mission for the Prince Regent. He only returns at hearing the news of his brother's death, making him the new Earl of Stafford. His love and passion for Corinne have not waned. In fact, remembering their nights of pleasure has been the only thing that's kept him sane on his dangerous journey. But she has changed much, filled now with bitterness and the fear of being deserted again. Ryder must woo her back to him and soothe her fears, all while discovering how his brother died and who may be at fault. It will be a treacherous adventure, but one consumed with building trust and love while enjoying carnal pleasures.

Eliza Knight is an award winning, USA Today and international bestselling author. Her love of history began as a young girl when she traipsed the halls of Versailles and ran through the fields in Southern France. She can still remember standing before the great golden palace, and imagining what life must have been like. Growing up in the Washington, D.C. area, her weekends were filled with visits to museums, and historical reenactments. Escape into history for courageous heroines, irresistible heroes and daring escapades. Join Eliza (sometimes as E.) on riveting historical journeys that cross landscapes around the world. She is a member of the Historical Novel Society and Novelists, Inc., the creator of the popular historical blog, History Undressed, and a co-host on the History, Books and Wine podcast. Eliza also writes contemporary women's fiction as Michelle Brandon.

While not reading, writing or researching for her latest book, she tries to keep up with her three not-so-little children. In her spare time (if there is such a thing…) she likes daydreaming, wine-tasting, traveling, hiking, staring at the stars, watching movies, shopping and visiting with family and friends. She lives atop a small mountain with her own knight in shining armor, three princesses, two very naughty Newfies, and a turtle named Fish.

I don't know what I expected with this one. I guess I thought the guy would have a better excuse. Instead he comes home after many years away, not having even written her, and expects her to welcome him with open arms. That just took the cake for me. There's just no apologizing for that level of insensitivity.
Then he does a couple things (that were long overdue anyways) to 'make things right' and expects to be instantly forgiven and even gets pissed that he isn't. She, of course, feels bad that she got mad at him because she's a doormat. Honestly, after 8 years, some serious grovelling was in order but nope, nada.

Quick

This book is short and quick, but feels complete. Don't read it if you are wanting a clean read because there are many passionate, well written love scenes. I liked the characters. They were not as in depth as some books so I did not feel as connected to them. I look forward to the next in the series.

Mehhhhh

What happened? This fell quite short of what I am normally accustomed to reading from this author who wrote the amazing wonderfully well written Highland Bound 1-3 series. Corinne seemed just weak and paranoid. This story lacked depth sadly.

While I did enjoy the storyline immensely, I felt let down near the end at how fast the villain was caught. Clearly the "assassin" wasn't one at all and just a temperamental elite social individual who wanted attention. I was hoping the plan would unfurl and the readers would be in awed at the villain's ingenuity and deviousness. I was also thinking that perhaps there was another person in play after he gets caught. I mean, surely the story doesn't end THAT abruptly does it? Yes, yes it did.
