Yukiko’s friend Sora also has a visual impairment, but one that’s different from her bestie. Sora can, at least, go running if things are okay, but when her route is sabotaged by an unknown bully it’s going to take Kurokawa to fix things, even if nobody asked him to.

Well-meaning, but misguided, is how I would sum this one up, which is kind of ironic when we see how Sora’s problem plays out. It’s a sad fact that every successive volume of this manga has been less and less engaging than the one before it.

The biggest positive of this volume is Sora herself, who has a big chip on her shoulder about sighted people and is determined to do as much as she can on her own with her limited vision. Her coming around isn’t particularly interesting, but everything else is great.

In fact, Sora is also kind of a problem because not only is she the sole focus, really, of this volume, but she’s also a lot more interesting than Yukiko ever gets when it’s all said and done. They both don’t want to be judged for their disabilities, but Sora is amped up to such a degree that she can be both short-sighted (sorry) and hostile. It’s also down to the writing, which seems to have no interest in Yukiko this volume.

The way she and Kurokawa start to get along drives Yukiko nuts and it’s a pretty cute set of moments as he nearly sweeps Sora off her feet just by being overly helpful and insisting that her desire to be able to run on her own shouldn’t be quashed by some jerk. His moment with the flowers is really nice.

This storyline gets into a lot of interesting tangents, including guided running, which is something I have seen before during races and I do like the amount of research this series keeps doing. There’s a pretty good joke when Kurokawa makes a tether for Yukiko and he bedazzles it to hell and back that I also really liked.

What falls down here is the resolution of the evil guy harassing Sora storyline, although it does do me the favour of not having her just forgive him and they start dating, even though he wants to. Yes, you definitely read that right.

Our evil guy turns out to have a nonsensically over the top backstory that sees him being so unable to cope with the world that he thinks throwing soup is a great way to get noticed. It just feels a lot over the top and I feel like the amount of awkward mistreatment this series loves to heap on things is pretty… excessive.

So he’s been bullied and that makes him a bully and he doesn’t know how to relate to people even as his boss is telling him to be better and “looking out for him” by giving him third degree burns. It’s a bit much for a story that used to be about funny relationship stuff with some refreshing takes on visual impairment.

And it’s not the first character we’ve seen with such a ridiculously dramatic set of motivations. I guess if you want some high melodrama it’s fine, but I found it absolutely muddled the message to have this guy so incapable of interacting with society.

I mean, I get it, I know how that can feel, but it’s the context of all this other stuff that makes it way more than is necessary. It’s jarring and rather than making the point it wants to make it just kind of makes my eyes roll. There’s laying it on thick and then there’s twenty coats of shellack. This is the latter.

There’s a lot of ‘reach exceeding the grasp’ to this story and I am admittedly happier to say that it tried and failed than to say it didn’t achieve a single thing, but there’s no getting around the fact that this landed with a dull thud for me. There’s a certain immaturity to the writing that I don’t especially love.

3 stars - I’d love to praise this as much as I did that first volume, but it just keeps trying to do way too much of what it isn’t that good at and going for a lot of angles when being straightforward would suit it a lot better.

This series doesn't pull its punches when dealing with drama. Again, a story opens lighthearted enough just to pivot and focus on looking at how a visually impaired person is getting tortured. From their it evolves into efforts to hlep the person regain their confidence, trying to entrap the perpatrator, and finally confronting the individual. When the cast does approach the perpatrator, its not a simple "someone is bad" story and much more issues are addressed. Just when it feels liek this series will be all jokes, it blindsides you with a very dramatic issues. It continues to be an incredible series.

3.5 Stars.

In volume 3 we are introduced to Sora, another blind person who loves to run but needs a guide. She keeps on tripping on items that are on the road. She knows someone is putting things on her path so she can stumble and possibly not run anymore.

I wasn't too fond of this volume because I felt like the side story of Sora was a little too long. It's about 80% of the volume and so it felt like a filler volume to me. Yes Sora's story was interesting but like I said, too long. Also, when you find out the reason why the items were left on the road was REALLY dumb and I can't believe the writer try to write that in. Like really?

Sora takes center stage this volume and makes it work real well.

Sora is having a issue. She likes to run a path but she's very close to being blind. And someone is throwing stuff in her path and she can't see it till she hits into it. Making it frustrating to do something she loves. This gets pretty dark at points, but a turn of events on the reasons why people do what they do is pretty interesting. Still, even in a serious volume, we do get points of levity that will make you laugh. This is a very very very enjoyable manga with a great cast of characters.

This continues to be cute and showcase diverse personalities and mindsets. Yukiko getting so huffy about Morio having no trouble with the bus was really cute, and I love the friendships forming. I also like the way that vision disability is shown to be different between people, as thats not something often discussed.
Morio is super sweet here, and I love how he wants to help but never forces it.

Sora is being targeted by an asswipe, but stubbornly refuses help from anyone sighted. And her reasons are... somewhat understandable, because, yeah, a sighted person would struggle to fully understand the troubles of a disabled person. So, it makes sense that Sora doesn't want Morio's help until after he's proven that he does indeed care about her and is trying to understand.

But the asswipe raises concerns because I'm not sure how someone gets that twisted around.

This series has 8 volumes.

Really like how it deep dives into the perspective of both sides on how they understand each other and their hardships. The guy think something very harmfully is caring and normal is very realistic. I personally relate to hurting other by not realizing someone others did to you everyday was actually hurtful and not loving.

This is a great series, and can be very thought provoking when it comes to bringing up people who are outside the “norm” for society. Even the bully is approached in a compassionate way, though I do think the explanation for his behavior was unbelievably ludicrous.

This was ok. Felt more like a filler volume since Sora’s story stakes up such a large part of the story. And I’m starting to realize that I just can’t get over how much Yukiko looks like she’s 12 while Morio looks his age

This series honestly is so sweet. Good friendships and a sweet romance. The main characters give puppy boy (despite the scar) and cat girl, which is becoming my favorite dynamic

I really enjoyed getting to know Yukiko’s friends, Sora and Aono, better in this volume. However, I did think that the reasoning behind the creep bullying Sora for being blind was weird though, and barely made any sense. I don’t care how badly you’re treated by your boss, there’s no way that at your big age you don’t know that throwing HOT SOUP on someone and running away is not a good way to get the attention of a girl you like!

"When you feel like you've been rejected by society you start to wield that solitude against innocent people."

As Morio and Yukiko continue to grow closer, their friends do too—or try to, at least! Differences in their lived experiences lead to clashes between Morio and Sora, Yukiko’s best friend—but could Sora’s love of running help them all find common ground and work together to take down a bully?

This volume hit wholesome friendship, tame jealousy, gaps in life experience, how hate from someone of a certain group can lead to resentment/hate/fear towards the whole group (because how do you know who's the safe sighted person?, for example), and how abuse breeds more abuse.

Love that the cops were a part of the plan from the start. Have you noticed in many stories that's never an option when it could easily be?

And I love Sora saying bullying is just dumb. So many things in life are miracles yet "They're wasting the good stuff in life."

I mean, really? There are all these things they could be doing with their time, yet they're wasting it hating on people? Are they that boring and miserable, they couldn't get a better hobbie? Do better. BE better.
