The greatest civilizations have all sought immortality.
From inventions to massive monuments, these societies have tried to produce something that would define them and last forever. But only one is God Himself. Christ’s greatest gift, His divine flesh and blood in the Eucharist, is the eternal defining legacy of Christendom, the flower of Western Civilization. The Eucharist is not just a doctrine; it is a reality to be lived, and it must shape our entire lives and culture. Indeed, from hospitals to the great cathedrals, this gift defined Western Civilization and allowed it to reach its highest heights.
Yet now, our Western Civilization verges on complete collapse because we lack this supernatural framework. We have reverted to being barbarians, devoid of a noble vision of human life and the personal cultivation of virtue. But there is a a return to a Eucharist-centered life.
What once took us to our summit can once again be our source for a flourishing civilization. The Blessed Sacrament has more power than any medicine to heal the body and soul, more strength than any army to defeat our foes, and more grace to transform our civilization by first transforming us. Only the Holy Eucharist, which built the great culture of Christendom, can both renew and save our secular culture by infusing it with beauty, festivity, community, and charity.
I debated whether this book deserved 3 or 4 stars. It has many typographical errors, as if there were no editor or proof reader. Enough that you notice it and it seems unprofessional. At the same time, I felt a bit as if I were reading a senior thesis. While Dr Staudt is clearly very knowledgeable and included great research, the voice and style of writing feels like that of a student and not someone with a PhD. Another reviewer said it was hard to get through because it was boring at times, and for the reasons I just stated, I agree.
However, due to his clear immense knowledge and importance of this subject, and his ability to not talk over the head of the average lay person, I settled on 4 stars. Particularly if you are not well-versed in Eucharistic theology, this is a good read.
The Eucharist is the source and summit of the Christian life. We are encouraged to unite our body with Christ's sacrifice and to be his body in the world. Includes a list of recently published books and several prayers appropriate for Mass and Communion. Great for reflection.
One of most important books I have read, stresses the importance of Christ and His sacrifice living through the Eucharist which must again become the center of our lives and culture.
The Eucharist is the source and summit of the Catholic Faith. It is everything to us. It is more than what appears to be just a wafer, and How the Eucharist Can Save Civilization does an excellent job explains this and so much more.
We learn about the institution of the Eucharist at the Last Supper, what it represented then and now, and how as Catholics we prepare to receive it. This seemingly simple act carries with it supernatural grace and power. This grace and power could change the world, for the better, if we only understood it better and utilized it.
Dr. Staudt does a great job explaining all of the above and giving us ways to take action to better this world. I recommend this book to anyone wanting to know more about the Eucharist, and for those wanting to know how it can change civilization.
Thank you to TAN Books for the copy of this book. All views are my honest opinion.
Great concept. I was excited to read this book. But it just fell flat for me. Others may like it. But I found it hard to get through. Just … very…. Slow moving.
