Though I Walk
Set in a small town in the mountains of North Georgia, Though I Walk tells the story of twenty-one-year-old Anna Renfro who discovers that her twin sister, Sam, has gone missing. Anna had escaped Marble Hill—colloquially named “Meth Hill”—and is away at college when she learns of her sister’s disappearance. Anna drops everything and immediately returns home to find her family and the police investigation in disarray.
Her mother, Jenny, copes by getting drunk and using dope, while her meth cooking and dealing Uncle Brokeback uses violence and intimidation to look for Sam on his own. What a ride! I honestly could only put this down to sleep or work. Clay has a talent for weaving beautiful description into a horrifying and gritty reality. Make no mistake, this book goes down a dark road and doesn't hold back the horrors capable by humans, however, the simple flow and honesty in which the characters develop allows the reader to breathe. The pacing is perfect and the mystery enough to keep one guessing. I particularly liked how the mother, Jenny, was allowed to fall apart and show the devastation of loss. Each character is not without fault but empowered by their love for one another and the area they call home.

A few quick thoughts:
1. The writing is badly in need of improvement. Sentence fragments, sentence fragments, and more sentence fragments! An occasional sentence fragment is forgivable if it helps drive the story in some way, but to me the constant deluge of purposeless fragments was just frustrating and annoying. The flow of the narrative is jarringly choppy, and the author frequently uses the wrong word (for example, on at least 2 occasions, he writes "exacerbate" when he means "exasperate"; these two words mean entirely different things). There's also a repetitiveness to the prose, such that the same sentiment or feeling on the part of a character was continually re-expressed but in slightly different words.
2. The book is badly in need of editing. That would help with #1 above, and in addition there are some glaring errors that went uncorrected (e.g. "...tried to understand what she was saw.")
3. The story, characters, and plot are not particularly strong; I would have loved to see all 3 developed a lot more. Consequently, I began to lose interest less than halfway through the book.

This was a phenomenal read. A little wordy at times but over all such a great read
Clay Anderson is a phenomenal southern gothic writer. Reminding me of the way Flannery O’Connor writes! This story of Anna trying to find her sister and in the process finding herself was so relatable in areas for me. Overall this was a fantastic read and I look forward to reading more from this author!

Thrilling novel that will not disappoint you. Especially because the writing style and prose of Clay Anderson brings to light the pull of the darker side of Appalachia and its people. The themes are so powerful and the excellent storyline, and the setting was done to perfection. The book was written with such poetic imagery. It brilliantly depicts the complicated and overlapping connections between grief, family, and community. Clay's book was very emotional, in the best way with relatable characters. Started reading and finished in two nights. Had to find out how it turned out. I had this book recommended to me by a friend as I was born in the area. If you like Southern fiction like I do, this is a great book to add to your collection. This is a wonderful story about Appalachia and Appalachian people. Overall, the writing, in places poetic, capture imagery of beauty and emotion. Perfect structure, length, and content.

Wow! What a trip! Though I Walk is a superbly written thriller with characters that stayed with me long after I finished the book. It's about the drug epidemic and much more including family ties, grief, poverty and hopelessness. I enjoyed the way Clay Anderson wove together several mysteries throughout this book! The description of the town is so well done that I feel like I’ve actually been there. There was a lot of excitement, mysterious characters, clever plot turns, and a few frightful moments. This was a stunning book. I enjoyed it tremendously! And, overall, just like his previous book, The Palms, Clay Anderson tells a story that is so fascinating, I love the twist and turns in this book. The characters are exactly how you would picture small town America. I love that Clay keeps you guessing until the very end. Though I Walk ranks in my top 10. Read it!

How is Anderson able to write such real characters in such gripping situations? This story had me invested in Anna and Sam from the first page of the prologue. There is no glamor here, just a mother and her twin daughters, trying to get from one day to the next in rural Georgia. The author’s deep descriptive skills paint a beautiful and heart-breaking picture of the harsh realities of small town life. I especially enjoyed the distinct voices and the Appalachian vernacular. (And Uncle Brokeback is simultaneously terrifying and endearing.) While this book is classified as a thriller/suspense/mystery (and it is in every sense!), it is most aptly described as “a story of human connections and our daily encounters with good and evil.”

In Clay's works, families seem afflicted with mystery, sorrows and past events that readers must learn through his strong prose.This book yields to a dark beckoning may find little more than a beginning. The essence of the love of these small towns set in the middle of nowhere, inhabited by those struggling with life, and dark characters that seem either drawn there, or stuck there, as well as those who take advantage of their circumstances. The book is dark, but parts are of light, showing that life can and will be better. This is not the type of book you read when you are looking for something light and easy. It's almost like the small North Georgia town constantly has a cloud over it and the only way to get some sun is to hitch a ride out of there. So much sadness and pain but has a great deal of hope. Life isn't all sunshine and roses though and this book does a good job in reflecting that reality. As grim as the story can be, it is more true to life than many other novels out there.
