The Ritual

Rate this book
Evil is at large… A member of the parliament is stabbed to death in Reykjavik, the small and usually peaceful capital of Iceland. Police officer Grímsson thinks he saw the perpetrator earlier that night, in a pub in the city´s east end. The young man turns himself in. He has no previous record and does not remember anything about the night of the murder, but his fingerprints are on the murder weapon. Grímsson feels that the young man is somehow innocent, a victim rather than a wrongdoer.

The day before the murder, Grímsson was called to a storage unit after a human skull was found there. The man who rented the unit, a known drug user and an anarchist, previously committed suicide. In the unit, Grímsson found books on black magic and hypnotism, a black mirror, black candles and a makeshift altar.

The leader of the anarchist gang is Aron Beck, a dangerous sociopath serving time in prison. When another brutal murder takes place, and another unlikely perpetrator is captured—a young woman who disappeared from a bar the night before—Grímsson begins to wonder if Aron Beck is somehow behind all this madness. But how?

The clock is ticking and yet another murder is brewing in the black cauldron of an evil mind…

Luettu suomenkielinen versio (Rituaali, kääntänyt Virve Juhola).

Big whoop.

Paska kirja. Luen jatko-osatkin.

This was so weird. The protagonist is the most unbearable sadsack, with self-esteem so low and social skills so poor that they rival my own! It was a heck of a choice. I appreciated it. What I found a little less easy to swallow was his bumbling incompetence combined with flashes of genius insight, and the way things work out for him (well, more or less) by pure luck.
The story itself was solid. A little slow, but not the worst pacing ever. For the first 7/8ths it was a pretty straightforward crime story with clear, sensible motives. I wondered how it was billed as supernatural or occult. Yeah, the protagonist (The Red Haired Giant, as the prose refers to him over and over and over) sees "death shadows"/has vague death-related premonitions, but it's barely touched on, mentioned in passing a few times. But then, BAM, as if out of nowhere, stuff gets wacky, just as the story is wrapping up. I was thrown for a loop, but I'm not mad. It was goofy but hey, sometimes I appreciate that, too.
I'm about to start book 2.

Men vilken fantastisk story!

The story has a good plot with all the dark undercurrents, social issues and surprise elements that a good nordic noir should have, but also with a supernatural twist due to the main characters own seventh sense. Hörður Grímsson, the ‘red haired giant’ is a flawed, grumpy and extremely likeable Icelandic police officer. His character, his wins and failings in his personal life and general attitude is what makes this story so interesting and a joy to read. Exciting Icelandic noir at irs very best.

About 1/3 in. Really confused why the author references a handful of metal bands (Deicide, Type O Negative, etc) and consistently calls them “rock” instead of metal! Did the author (or was this a call by the translator?) think that readers who pick up a book with a giant purple pentagram on the cover would be put off or confused??

Brooding hero and black magic

I enjoyed the plot of this book, but the long philosophical parts were not for me. The scientist in me is skeptical of how the murderer committed the crimes.

Had all the ingredients but the execution lacked: it was quite boring and I didn’t get invested in any of the characters.

Police officer Grimsson is definitely the anti hero and comes across at times unhinged but somehow it works in this twisted tale of murder.

Great introduction to this unconventional character with an uncanny ability to foresee death. This case is a convoluted tangle with the occult, and Hörður, the red headed neurodivergent 'giant' who is our reluctant hero, makes some questionable decisions in his following up on clues that will have you cringing, but keep you turning those pages!
