Chris Heffelfinger is a writer based in Washington DC, specializing in militant Islamic ideology. He is currently a Research Fellow at the Global Terrorism Research Center at Monash University, Melbourne, Australia. Previously, Heffelfinger served as an FBI Fellow at the Combating Terrorism Center at the United States Military Academy at West Point. In that role, he provided training on Islamic culture, history and identity as well as counter terrorism to FBI agents and Joint Terrorism Task Forces across the U.S. At the CTC, he also contributed to long-term research projects such as the Militant Ideology Atlas and Project Harmony (through SOCOM).
Mr. Heffelfinger is a fluent Arabic speaker, having spent time in Yemen, Saudi Arabia, the Maghreb, and other Arab and Islamic countries. In 2000, he lived in Sana`a, Yemen (coincidentally attending the same language school as John Walker Lindh). He lived and studied for several years with Muslim organizations refuting militant Salafi ideology through Islamic source texts, including prominent moderate scholars such as Soheib Bencheikh, Hisham Kabbani and Gibrael Haddad.
