This is the 5th Christmas story co-authored by mother/daughter team Mary Higgins Clark and Carol Higgins Clark. They are short, cute mysteries that are easy to read.
In the picturesque village of Branscombe, New Hampshire, it’s time for the Festival of Joy. The town are all working together to prepare for this first, hopefully, annual festival. When the hard-working, long-time employees of Conklins do not get the expected Christmas bonus, they leave the store disgruntled. When it turns out that the same night their lottery numbers are drawn as the winners in the Mega mega lottery, their anger turns to joy. Unfortunately, one the their regular group did not play that week on the advice of his financial advisors. When he finds out that they are swindlers who also played the same numbers, he had told them what numbers they usually played, he steals their lottery ticket and bad luck befalls him. Regan Reilly, her husband Jack, her paretns as well as Willy and Alvirah Meehan had all travelled to Branscombe for the festival, so they all get involved in the mystery. The action is fast-paced in this clever story, with just enough twists to keep you interested. A cute Christmas mystery, which I read by the pool in Florida and enjoyed just as much as if I had read it over the Christmas holidays.
I wish there were more of these! I love both Carol's and Mary's books, but these are the quickest read for me. I try to read one between Christmas and New Year's every year. I will be sad when these run out!
A group of four store employees have all pitched in $1 each for lottery tickets. The fifth employee who normally goes in with them is taking a class from some financial advisors. They recommend he not do it. The group always chooses the same numbers and then take turns for the big number. Duncan although not playing suggesting 32 for the big number. Their number wins and they decide to include Duncan since they used his number for the powerball. Duncan goes missing and now some members think that he bought the 2nd winning ticket for himself.
This was a cute book that takes place in a small town in New Hampshire. Although there are many characters to keep up with and a lot happening, it is a very cute, sometimes silly book.
With character names like Muffie and Flower, you know you are not in for a deep read. It was improbable, predictable and cheesy but it was a light fun read. Not one of MHC best by a long shot. It starts with a Christmas festival being held in a small New Hampshire town. Four employees from a local market win big in the lottery and mayhiem starts and the festival gets lost in the shuffle of things. Without going into any detail, everything works out and a happy ending is had by all. I'd only recommend this book if you are a true MHC fan and accept it for what it is, entertainment with no deep meanings or a story leaving you searching for the meaning of life. You will probably forget it by the time you put it back on the shelf.
No one of her better showings. All of the characters were ridiculous. Much of the book seems like filler as if they are trying to hit a word count. And the level of coincidence surrounding the ring was beyond unbelievable.
Tried to read something Christmas-y this season. Was very disappointed. I normally like Mary Higgins Clark, but this was very uninteresting. Also, the phrase "get your mitts off my money" was used. Unless used in a 1920's gangster movie, using the term "mitts" is just weird. No one talks like that.
Good gravy, I should know better... but it was a book club pick. I will be nice at the next meeting and keep my mouth shut so as not to hurt feelings. It's somebody's thing, but definitely not mine. So dated to have been written in this century. Please give me some intelligent content, realistic plot, more than one dimensional character development.
I particularly enjoyed the community spirit in this novel. I love the way Mary Higgins Clark captured the essence of friendsip too, and the way in which she showed genorousity between the lottery winners. Moderate level of suspense and thriller, a good book to enjoy..
This book may be an older story but I loved every minute! Mom used to read Mary Higgins Clark so this one is for you, Mom! All the good memories of sharing books with you came flooding back. Merry Christmas in Heaven! XOXO
I have read a couple of Higgins Clark Christmas novellas in the past, and this was much sillier than I remember them being. If you have that in mind going in, however, the story turns into a rather hilarious, fast-paced romp. It is a quick read with a simply crazy plot line, and a guaranteed happy ending. It is so light - it made me laugh out loud and ended up being a rather enjoyable diversion.
I believe I'm getting attached tho these (Regan Reilly)books....this is the third one I've read and love how everything seems to really come together for everyone in these books. (Yes the happy endings). And two of them have been christmas books, which I love reading.I would recommend these books to read if you like warm fuzzy comforting endings.
Good holiday read. Had some weird charcter twists that left me scratching my head, but really a quick read. Fun and light hearted. I read it in 3 days.
more or less amusing christmas book about a stolen ring and a win in the lottery... basic and flat characters and childish writing style. Easy to read and at some points interesting story.
one word WOW!!! i was so into this book, I mean if you look at my history it takes me a week or two to finish a book, i finished this in 3 days. It was a good mystery of who done it a good classic read. it was about a lottery so it made me think of the lottery pool I have been in with my girlfriends who are like family to me. This give me hope that one day our time will come. but the authors gave so many twist and turns to who the bad person could be that it completely blindsided me when the bad person was reviled. and the best part it ended on a happy note.
A group of employees have been playing the lottery for a long time. They finally win the power ball.
This book is centered around a new Christmas festival, but because of this group of people in this little town winning there was so much excitement that the festival takes second place.
There is a bit of romance, one person shows true friendship, some swindling and some danger in this book.
I enjoyed this book. It is a cheesy, cozy Christmas mystery book. It was written in the early 2000s so it was pretty neat to see that although they had cell phones, they still relied on home phones and computers to check their emails. It was like a blast from the past lol. The authors get to the point and I appreciate that in a book. It was a good start to my Christmas season.
Got this at a book fair in the romance section, it is not a romance novel 🤣 I found too many characters were introduced in too short of time so I got confused as to who was who, but decent read overall
Franchement pas mon genre! Ça reste distrayant en cette période de noël mais il y a beaucoup trop de rebondissements farfelus et on finit par ne plus y croire!
