My actual rating is 3.5 stars

This is the beginning of a trilogy that is set in the world of Dragonlance. This book deals with the character Golgren who we met in the trilogy known as "The Minotaur Wars". Golgren wants to unite the ogre empire but other factions have different ideas.

When one reads a Richard Knaak book in this world one expects a massive amount of death and destruction and he delivers. There are a number of interesting characters and plots throughout this book. Golgren is a great character and I was immediately invested in him and his plans. There is intrigue and machinations from other characters that keep the plot going. There is a vast array of different characters including the elf woman slave or the captured human knight. The reason I did not give this a higher rating is that this is also a set up novel with several plots that will be answered in the subsequent books.

This is a good introduction to a new trilogy and I am looking forward to continuing this series. I never thought I would like a book with an ogre as the main character but I do as the character is terrific and I really enjoyed the picture the author painted of the ogre homeland.

This book while really good just didn't seem to have the Dragonlance feel for me.

It was solid but I was confused as well. I think the characters well well written just wanted more character driven items so I could really find more characters to love.

Definitely one of the better authors for the side Dragonlance books. I've enjoyed everything he has wrote for the setting up to and including this one. A cool continuation of the after effects of his minotaur trilogy. Just ogres being ogres.
