After sneaking out in the middle of the night, on his way to the peninsula, he witnesses a murder at the hands of 'the man with a limp'.The murderer initially does not know he was witnessed. Not knowing what else to do that wouldn't jeopardize him being sent back to the orphanage, Auggie tries as best he can to put the incident out of his head and so begins his new life adjusting to the wilds of Presque Isle. To that end, Auggie is helped along by Joe Root, a hermit himself and a curiosity among the locals, who has been living on the beaches of Presque Isle for decades. He is also befriended by kitchen help, Maisy, who works at a resort at the entrance to the peninsula. Over time, his relationship with Maisy blossoms into more than just friendship as he adjusts to his new life. During this time, he also slowly begins to realize that the murder he had witnessed is part of a larger plan that has something to do with the peninsula itself. Auggie inadvertently inserts himself into the investigation and is befriended by Will Weston, the detective investigating the murder. As businesses around Presque Isle are being bought then shuttered by a mysterious businessman, one of these owners is murdered. It is then that Auggie begins to realize that whatever nefarious plan 'the man with the limp' has, it is putting his life and the lives of those closest to him in mortal danger.

It’s 1888 and 16-year-old Augie Rose has run away from the orphanage where he had been constantly bullied for his small stature. He is headed for Presque Isle, a peninsula on Lake Erie where he hopes to meet Joe Root, a well-known recluse who has lived there for years. Augie hopes Joe will teach him how to live there like he does. But, on the way, Augie witnesses a murder. He manages to evade the murderer but a small act of kindness to ensure the victim will be found will have profound effects on his life.

A Summer with the Hermit King is a YA historical fiction novel by William Todd. Although it centres around the murder, it is about so much more - a coming-of-age tale about first love, friendship, and the true meaning of family. Unlike the frenetic pace of many of today’s YA novels, this is much quieter, more character-driven, at a slower, more steady pace that draws the reader in and allows them time to get to know and care about the characters, a perfect read for a quiet afternoon. I’d like to thank Netgalley and BooksGoSocial for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

Teenage years are fraught with turmoil, melodrama, and raw emotions in the best of circumstances. For the young orphan Auggie, his life swerves out of control after the murder suicide of his parents and he ends up in a Catholic orphanage. Tired of being bullied by the bigger boys, Auggie decides to run away and take refuge in the wilds of Presque Isle on Lake Erie. Aware of stories of the Hermit King who lives off the land, Auggie sets off to mimic this rough and rugged adventure. You can't help but love Auggie as you follow him on his quest to start a new life, free of emotional ties and society's restraints. Set in a much simpler time and place, Auggie's tale has an almost Tom Sawyer/ Huckleberry Finn spin. His innocence and sweetness endear him to those who cross his path and they want to help him. Joe Root the Hermit King befriends the young rebel and helps him set up camp in the wilderness surrounding an exclusive hotel. There he meets the girl of his dreams Maisy as she provides him food and friendship. Even the local police detective Will take a shine to the young wanna be hermit.

Unfortunately Auggie is privvy to a murder on his first night of freedom and this clouds his adventure. The murder mystery provides plenty of fuel to complicate poor Auggie's wish for a simple existence. Set in the summer of 1888, Auggie and Will join forces to find the murderer of Will's cousin. This back story provides a good ole fashioned dectective tale without all the gimmicks and gadgets of modern CSI mysteries. Little does he realize the danger he has put him and his new found friends. Even Joe Root is dragged into danger as unseen forces want to destroy the idyllic life on the peninsula.

Auggie's coming of age tale captures a time and place long gone yet the sweetness of young love and the thrill of adventure are timeless. This YA novel, based on a true story of a hermit and a summer vacation resort, is a great summer beach read for all. The haunting charm of Presque Isle and its environs lend a sense of danger and reality to Auggie's desire to create a new life. You can almost smell the water and feel the heat of the summer sun and hear the buzz of the insects as you read. William Todd created a wonderful novel that stays with you long after you finish the last page.

Review:

👉Talking about the title of the book, the title of the book is really so interesting to read.

👉The cover is appealing and attractive as well. "A Summer with the Hermit King" by William Todd takes readers on a captivating journey to the year 1888, introducing us to the diminutive protagonist, Auggie Rose.Sometimes life throws at you some really difficult situations and you always find yourself at crossroads, you need to choose but you cannot. Here in this book you will find similar situations and will be amazed to find out the link of the title to the story. Just one thing, don't rush the book. Be patient with it it won't disappoint. After a lot of pain and torture from the boys of the orphanage, when Auggie Rose finally decided to leave and make a life of his own, clueless as he was, he found himself in a very confusing and incalculable position. By that, I mean that he was a witness to a murder. How shocking it is for a guy who just left an orphanage and as it was not enough to just witness it, he was (later in his life) a part of this murder all over again. When his life was going all good and he finally had someone to linger on, his past didn't leave him.

When circumstances align unfavorably, it can be seen that with having an individual in the unfortunate situation of being at the wrong place at the wrong time, the repercussions can be far-reaching and profound. This convergence of events possesses the power to trigger a seismic shift in the course of that person's life.

In the book, ‘A Summer with the Hermit King’ by author William Todd, we witness the same being happening with our main protagonist, Augustus Albert Rose, when he finds himself being present at an inopportune juncture, which further initiates a cascade of consequences that extend beyond the immediate event.

Fleeing the confines of his orphanage, Auggie embarks on a journey with no financial resources to even secure his basic sustenance. In an unexpected twist of fate, he crosses paths with Maisy, and it becomes apparent that the dormant spirit within his diminutive frame had been stirred to life. This encounter marks a pivotal moment where his inner vitality emerges from its slumber, giving way to a newfound sense of purpose and connection.

As the story delve deeper, we see how Auggie makes the the best of his challenging circumstances with a resilient mindset and proactive approach. By reframing his perspective, seeking opportunities for growth, and harnessing his inner strengths, he is able to transform adversity into a catalyst for positive change.

The altered trajectories resulting from the one event that he had witnessed not only reshaped his immediate circumstances but also his long-term aspirations, relationships, and life decisions. And the choices he subsequently made, influenced by the events set into motion, certainly steered his life onto a fundamentally different path than what he might have envisioned before. Hence, I am going to give this FIVE STARS ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

✨Okay, I have to start off by saying that I love a cozy mystery. Really, really love them, so when the chance came up to read and share this book, I totally jumped at it.

✨A Summer with the Hermit King is a murder mystery, it’s historical fiction, it’s a coming of age tale, and it’s a story of finding your way in the wake of tragedy. This story was cozy in all of the best possible ways. The stakes were there—Auggie has experienced both terrible loss and abuse in his sixteen years, and the side characters have equally difficult histories, there is a very real murder and a very eminent threat, but the book is laced with intrigue, with possibility, with adventure, and against all odds—with hope.

✨I’m an emotional reader, and I usually curl up with mysteries in the fall, but this book is a perfect summer read-set on the shores of Erie, PA in 1888. I really enjoyed that the protagonist of this story didn’t want to be a detective; he didn’t set out to track down murderers or murders to solve. Instead, in his attempt to escape his own struggles, he happens to be in the wrong place at the wrong time and what he witnesses will not let him go.

✨The layers of the story develop concurrently—Auggie is learning to survive on his own but also learning how to depend on others at the same time he is uncovering intentionally (and unintentionally) the details of the crime he witnessed and its part in a much larger plan. As that plan threatens his new friendships and life in his small community, he must solve the crime to protect those he is growing to love.

✨This was a great book, a pretty quick read, and the perfect cozy mystery for curling up with right now.

The incidents that happen to us in our teenage years leaves the most impact in our lives and decides what type of human we will grow up to. A Summer with the Hermit King by William Todd is the perfect example of this statement.

The story is about a 16 year old orphan Auggie, who is constantly bullied by other children in the orphanage and thus he one day decides to leave the orphanage and live a secluded life. But faith had other plans for him, the night he escaped the orphanage he witnessed a murder but decides not to talk about it as it may result in him getting back to the orphanage, he tries to just erase that memory from his mind but was of no use.

He meets Joe Root, a Hermit after which his life starts to change he gains many friends and a love interest Maisy, but this happiness of his was in danger because of the murder he decided not to talk about. As the story unfolds, it becomes clear that the murder at the beginning was just a small step of a big plan and that it poses a great threat to his loved ones. What will Auggie do now? How will he save his friends and who is this murderer and what is his plan? These are the questions that the story answers.

The story moves at a decent pace and honestly speaking it was the title that brought me to this book and I'm not disappointed in picking it up. The book is a blend of adventure, life lessons and murder mystery.  It follows themes of love, friendship, and freedom and dependency. The language used is simple and easily understood.

This book will be a great read for the lovers of adventure or murder mystery genre. Get it now.

I want to start off by saying that I received a complementary ebook copy. In return for my honest thoughts and review. I want to say after reading this book. Definitely adding more books from this author. I love everything about this book. The characters and the world the author created. Even the time this book is set. I loved Auggie heart and everything about his character. I wanted to hug and hold him. I can’t imagine the lost and hurt Auggie felt losing his parents. Yes this book took me a little longer to finish. But I don’t like rushing through books. That the characters have a hold on my heart. I could definitely see myself doing a reread of this book in the future. I am so happy that I signed up for this book tour. You never know what kind of books you would have never thought of picking up. Highly recommend this book.

After being constantly bullied for being small, 16-year-old Auggie decides to runaway from the orphanage. Auggie heads for Presque Isle, a peninsula on Lake Erie. Auggie has heard stories of Joe Root the Hermit King and hopes he can meet and learn from him. Joe takes Auggie under hiss wing and helps him set up a camp in the surrounding area of a hotel. This is where Auggie meets Maisy and Will a local police detective.
Oh by the way, Auggie's journey to meet Joe wasn't as simple as you might think, Auggie witness a murder, but did the murderer see him?
There is so much I could tell you but I don't want to spoil it for you. I loved that it's based on a true story, I think it makes it more real knowing that this did happen.

This was a brilliant historical YA mystery mixed with a bit of coming-of-age. Auggie is a great character that quickly captures your heart. This book moves along at a smooth, but not particularly quick pace. I can't say I ever got bored while reading, and I enjoyed getting to know Auggie and those around him better as the story progressed. Todd expertly brought all the characters to life, even "the man with the limp", and his descriptions make the story unfold like a story before readers' eyes. Perfect for young readers who enjoy mysteries, or are interested in exploring the more cozy side of reading. This would be a great summer read, on vacation or just relaxing in your own backyard.

Very Entertaining

Although this style book is no longer my first reading choice, I found the book very entertaining and the characters were well fleshed out so I almost felt like I knew them - and truly liked them and was thrilled when things started working out in their favor. Interesting, fun to read, but more for 12 to 14-year-olds.
