Brides of Chattan #1

Mistress Mackintosh and the Shaw Wretch

Rate this book
In 1725, a secret convent has been established on the Aberdeenshire coast.

Jory Mackintosh is more excited by healing herbs than husbands or holy prayers. She craves freedom—and a chance to sneak into medical school. Instead, on the eve of her escape, she becomes an unwilling pawn in her family’s schemes with a rival clan.

Finlay Shaw, the disgraced younger brother of the laird, has spent ten long years atoning for his past failures, but nothing can wash away the stain of fratricide. When the clans order him to escort Jory to her new life as a nun, thus securing an alliance with the freshly formed Black Watch, it’s his last chance for redemption. Too bad for Finn, Jory has no intention of following orders.

Trapped on the road together, often with only one bed between them, the two butt heads and match wits, forced to acknowledge the dark shadows that have haunted them both for years. Can they learn to trust each other, and themselves, to fly in the face of their families’ wishes, or will they choose the solitary futures they always believed they deserve in this unorthodox runaway bride story?

Mistress Mackintosh and the Shaw Wretch is a smart, sweet and tightly plotted Highland romance. I fell in love with the heroine, Jory, right away - she is intelligent and self-aware with a terrific sense of humor. I especially appreciated how Prendeville included her scoliosis, making it part of how Jory developed, but not a stumbling block to her growth. Our hero, Finn, is a cinnamon roll with an edge and I was here for it.

The writing is smart and skillful, the plot engaging and who doesn’t love a road-trip romance? I thoroughly enjoyed Mistress Mackintosh and am looking forward to the next installment of the Brides of Chattan.

Determined heroine, sympathetic hero - up to a point - with an excellent mix of hijinks and danger. Rose Prendeville is an author to watch and Mistress Mackintosh and the Shaw Wretch is a delightful historical romance. Highly recommend!

A determined maid!

So Finlay Shaw, the “Shaw Wretch”, received his moniker when as a youngster he was persuaded away from his watch. That led to tragedy at the Battle of Preston, “where his callow blunder cost many mens lives.” Ten years later and he still carries the name and his shame. It’s 1725 and he’s to escort a young maid to a secret convent in Aberdeenshire as part of a Chattan clan agreement.
Marjorie Mackintosh (Jory) is a young woman who has curvature of the spine. Men don’t find her attractive. So far Jory’s bridegrooms have failed at the last moment. Jory’s father had been killed at Preston and Jory is in the care of her uncle.
Her uncle has decided to give her into a nunnery run by their enemies the Gordon’s, in the hope that they will constrain the actions of the Watch. Vain hope! but then nothing to loose and everything to gain. The Gordon’s asked for Jory by name. Now you and I might be suspicious but they were following the general drift and occasionally going, Huh!
The thing is Jory is planning to take her dowry and escape enroute! She tries and there’s a few funny, and quite poignant moments.
There’s also several heart-stopping advents, some occasional light relief times, many Oh My’s and other times of frustration with our main characters. A storyline of deception, trust and betrayal.
Of course redemption for both characters lends a hand in this Highlands historical romance. Sparkling, and often hilarious times makes this a winner.

I never thought I would enjoy historical romances but now I find myself gravitating to these wonderful stories. They have a special ability of incorporating a historical event or moment in time with a beautiful tale of love and romance. It’s my one true reality escape, ensconcing me in a new world, new experiences with a dash of history. ‘Mistress Mackintosh and the Shaw Wretch’ is a charming story that delivers.

If you like charming historical romances set in the Scottish Highlands during the time of the Jacobites, or even if you don’t, I highly recommend this book.

( now, if only historical romance was a class…. 🤔).

The start of a new series, this book tells the story of Jory and Finn, two immensely likable characters. Finn is tasked with escorting Finn to a nunnery. However, it soon becomes abundantly clear to him that she has too much spunk to take her vows and that she will challenge him every step of their journey.

I read a lot of Scottish romances, and this one stands out because of the meticulous historical details, the uniqueness of the heroine (physical disability + dark skin), and the evolved hero. Jory and Finn's connection was palpable and not merely based on lust. It was so refreshing to read swoon-worthy romantic lines that were not connected to physical relations though I wouldn't mind steamier bedroom scenes in the author's future books. Because the author was able to make me invested in Jory and Finn's relationship, an epilogue would have been great. Hopefully, they'll appear later in the series.

I'm looking forward to seeing what's next!

This was a fantastic start to a new series by this author.

Jory is a thoroughly likeable and relateable character, searching for independence in a society that doesn't believe women should have any. Finlay is a swoon-worthy hero with sympathetic demons. The two of them together make a fantasy team with great banter, great chemistry, and (most important), great tension.

I look forward to the next book and the next batch of troubles!

Ok, this story was so fun to read! I obviously immediately fell in love with the cover and the premise of the book (first in a series - how exciting!) was right up my alley. I don't read a lot of historical romances, for some reason, but I actually do enjoy them a lot more than contemporary ones if done well, and this one absolutely did its job. It's not as steamy as I was led to believe, but I still found the chemistry between the two protagonists very sweet. They feel fleshed-out and, plot-wise, there's a great balance of banter, feminism and road trip. Finn is such a great benevolent male character, very swoon-worthy even! If only real people could all be more like him, I'm fairly sure depression would be forever cured. Anyway, this is a solid start to the "Brides of Chattan" series and I honestly can't wait to read more.

I enjoyed this #ownvoices scoliosis, forced proximity, dual POV, historical romance set in the Scottish Highlands during the 18th century. Perfect for fans of Outlander, this was a great start to a new series that sees a woman born with scoliosis and shunted off to a nunnery taking back her autonomy and falling for the man from a rival clan who is given the task to bring her to the nuns. Along the way there is lots of adventures, only one bed situations and the two find themselves falling in love with one another despite their differences. Good on audio and can be read as a standalone.

Thank you to Eridani Press, Netgalley and the author for an ARC of this book - I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I can honestly say, although this is the first book in a series and the first one of I have read from this author, I am sure this is going to be a hit. The book is written with humour and there are plenty of sparks flying between the two characters, who are well-formed, believable and adorable.

I cannot wait for the next one!

4 1/2 stars.

I really liked this one! A road-trip historical romance with lots of tension and adventure, not to mention cute moments between the main characters.

Having both POVs was a treat and it made following the story an easy task. The writing is well done, the history and setting captivating, and the characters charmingly flawed.

Looking forward to more from this series.

Jory is the absolute worst. I think she's meant to be a "strong, independent woman" but really she comes across as whiny, childish, ungrateful, and honestly just super unpleasant to the people around her. She treats Finlay like trash. I think this book is supposed to show a relationship where the woman is empowered and respected, but really it just shows a very immature woman and the man who is patient enough to deal with her. I also saw zero chemistry between the pair, even when I was hoping Jory would appreciate all that Finlay was doing for her. No matter how much I thought about it, the pairing just made no sense at all. I did enjoy the story but I did get lost in the dialogue from time to time which made it hard to follow, the use of Scottish language was a nice touch but also hard to follow, which at times I was confused where I was in the story and writing. I really struggled to connect with the story and the characters and unfortunately, this was a miss for me.

I feel bad that the best I really have to say about Rose Prendeville's Mistress Mackintosh is that it was....fine. Nothing really wowed me or drew me in, but I can't quite put my finger about why I never really cared about the characters, their world, or the romance. Everything was....fine.

I will say, if I had to give one area of critique, is that the characters read much younger than they should have. I checked the description several times to make sure that this wasn't supposed to be a YA novel. It's not, but the way the protagonists are written made them seem more 17 year olds than 20-somethings. Part of it was the authorial tone. Part of it was the dialogue and characters' internal thoughts.

Thanks to Netgalley and Xpresso Book Tours for the ebook ARC. All opinions are mine alone.

Jory has ambitions that keep her well away from marriage. Becoming a nun is not one of them, yet she's being sent to a convent anyway. Her escort, Finn, is on a mission of his own; having an awkward girl in tow is an annoyance, but delivering her is the simplest part of his task. Or... not.

I found this a little slow to start, but once the road trip got going I really enjoyed the plot, the historical detail and the obvious chemistry between the two main characters. Jory is independent, determined, and yet so naive: full of plans which don't stand up to reality, but fiercely unbowed regardless. Finn is almost too good to be true: still trying to atone for decade-old actions, he deals with Jory more leniently than she deserves at times, but the connection and attraction that develops between them helps both come to terms with the painful parts of their respective pasts. Overall a solid, well-written, four-star read.

Jory Macintosh is determined to make her own future after a life that’s constantly been at the heed of others. Finlay Shaw is trying to atone for the sins of his past. When the unexpected pair are thrust together by their two families on a journey across Scotland, it’s all they can do not to kill each other. Instead, they form a tight friendship and love.

This book was really enjoyable. The author has a fun way of immersing you into the setting of 1700s Scotland while still retaining her own voice. I was worried going into it that it would feel like an Outlander knockoff, but it held its own very well. At times the plot felt a little rushed, especially at the beginning, but the historical details and story had me forgiving this one small flaw. Overall it was a fun, quick read!

This is one of those books that had such promise, if not for one key factor - the heroine who couldn't stop being a disagreeable, rude, obnoxious, immature wretch of a person. Indeed, I was thinking that the "Shaw Wretch" might actually refer to her until I looked back at the title, and I realized that nope, the lovely, pleasant, considerate, kind hero was supposed to be the wretch in this tale. At least, according to rumor, since it was the people around him who referred to him as such. I never was able to figure out why with great detail, because I had to stop reading after 50% for the sake of my blood pressure.

The book opens with a scene a la Titanic, with the heroine perched on the precipice of a wall overlooking the loch, and the hero comes upon her, insisting she come down or he would jump in with her. I swooned internally, thinking this was a very promising start to the relationship. Sadly, I was very, very wrong. The heroine soon learns she is to be sent off to be a nun, considering she is unmarriageable due to what appears to be scoliosis. She is, naturally, disinclined to submit to such a future, and she begins to think about living in hiding as a man, finding work, etc. The hero is to escort her to where is to live as a nun, and quite quickly things turn sour. Our heroine, Jory, first tries to trick him out of the dowry she is sure he is carrying, leaving him naked, without his horse, in the middle of the forest. She races away, only for her horse to throw a shoe, and our hero, Finlay, must then rescue her. Despite her causing him such grief, he actually gives her a full body massage when they arrive at the cabin. The story progresses with similar actions - Jory does or says something awful, Finlay takes it like the absolute doormat that he is and waits on her hand and foot. Jory feels some shame for a fraction of a second before shrugging off her humanity and doing something crappy all over again. I felt like I was reading a YA book...until we got to Jory suddenly feeling desire for Finlay and masturbating in bed with Finlay asleep on the FLOOR beside her. Because heaven forbid she allow him to sleep on the bed, after all she has put him through. And did I mention she hates all men? She says it quite frequently, and despite Finlay giving her no reason to fear him, she constantly reacts as if he's this monster who is going to hurt her in retaliation for all she keeps doing, despite the fact that he has been the soul of kindness the whole time.

I saw zero chemistry between the pair, even when I was hoping Jory would appreciate all that Finlay was doing for her. He even got her shoes with LIFTS, to help with her pain, and still - he was not worth her kindness or consideration. I don't need to read about that kind of heroine getting a happy ending. No, thank you.

“I told you, mistress. If you jump, I shall follow. So we may as well go over together.”

If you’re looking for a hidden gem, you have to pick up this sweet, dramatic, twisty love story.

Miss Prendeville. Mistress Prendeville even. May I call you Rose? I just have to say. Wow. Thank you for writing this!
Sometimes a book clicks into my heart in a unique way. This is one of those books. About halfway through I knew it would be five stars for me. Why? It’s hard to put my finger on it. It’s just the perfect mixture of ingredients, much like the sweet foraged meals our main characters eat throughout the book.
First of all there’s the cover. This isn’t something I usually address in a review but I feel I have to. Although the book is much darker than I might have guessed from the illustrated cover (if you have sensitivities please check content warnings, there is a lot), the spirit of Jory and Finn is absolutely captured.
Then there’s the writing! Miss Prendeville has a beautiful writing style, lilting and poetic, that makes me want to quote even mundane sentences. She’s also a master of showing, not telling. Describe your feisty female lead as a tiny hedgehog and I’ll be your fan for life honestly.
Of course there’s the characters. The characters are so beautiful, especially Finn. He’s a combination cinnamon roll and warrior. There were too many precious moments between Finn and Jory to count. I will say the villains are very intense (again, check content warnings please).
Another really special touch was Jory’s disability. It’s uncommon to see that represented so well without making it her personality. Finn was incredibly empathetic about her pain, and it’s truly beautiful and unique. Most books don’t go there with chronic illness. Honestly this one made my eyes get misty.
Overall it’s just a great book and I cannot wait to continue the series!

Tropes: Only one bed, friends to lovers, road trip, found family
CW: Death of parent, violence, bullying, sexual assault, kidnapping, chronic illnesses, murder, medical trauma

I received an eARC of this book via NetGalley. Opinions are all my own.

2/5 stars!

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advance copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

The cover is cute and what initially attracted me to this book. It definitely isn't like the usual historical romance covers we are seeing, but other than that, this book ain't it for me. When I read historical romance books, I expect it to be dry at some point in the process (either in the storyline or the writing of the author). Surprisingly, this book had both ALL two throughout the entire reading experience and it definitely made me bored most of the times and almost caused me to have a reading slump. There's no tension in the storyline and the main characters don't have chemistry together. Our MMC also was so awkward and it's painful to read some of his dialogue sometimes because I am getting that secondhand embarrassment from him.

Everything about this book was delicious and fulfilling. It was a roadtrip story I couldn't put down, and I gobbled up every lovely word. It gave me everything I want in a story, and did so in such a meaningful and powerful way.

The characters are so real and beautifully flawed, and their chemistry is absolute fire. I adored every second of unraveling Jory and Finn's story, and learning and growing—and even hurting—with them. I love this couple so much and that they have each other's backs through it all. That was impactful to me. Jory is so badass, too, and Finn is the gooiest and dreamiest of cinnamon rolls.

It's smart, empowering, steamy, and incredibly heartfelt. Once again, Prendeville has won me over, and I can't wait for the next Brides of Chattan novel.

Mistress Mackintosh and the Shaw Wretch is the first book I have read by Rose Prendeville, I was tempted to pick up the book not only for the adorable cover but also I love a road trip romance. I did not really have any expectations when going into this novel, I was curious and expected to have a fun and charming read based off of the cute cover. Prendeville's writing has an easy tone, making the novel easily accessible, and I would say maybe a good first historical romance novel for someone. The novel is moderately paced through out the start and middle and swiftly ramps up when we breach into the action of the story at the conclusion. Overall with was a gently enjoyable novel, but it was overall lacking in a true romantic development through out for me to fully be head over heels for our couple.

Jory has more interest in the art of healing than she does to find a husband, so the novel starts off with her trying to escape and run away to medical school. Her plans are swiftly overturned when she becomes an unwilling pawn in her family's scheme against a rival clan. Finn is a disgraced brother of a laird, who has spent the last ten years trying to atone. So when he is tasked with escorting Jory to her new life as a nun and securing an alliance with the black watch, he takes up the task, expecting it to be easy, but Jory has other plans.

I think Jory as the heroine is interesting and fun, she is bold, smart and is willing to risk all to secure her dowery and her dreams (which can also put her into some pretty precarious situations). Finn is also a really good hero, he is a hard worker, he wants to do what is right and he wants to protect others. Together these two should be fire, and we do get to start to see this in the last twenty percent when they truly start to work together and trust the other. I think what I found lacking in this novel was a true building up of chemistry between these two, I felt like their true progression was from "rivals" to friends, I was then told that they both were "in love", but I did not truly believe that. I think there was a lack of building up of chemistry and tension between them that made me feel the attract between each other. The building of subtle moments and touches between them were missing for me to see them falling for each other. There is also very little steam in this novel, while not officially closed door, it is very subtle. I know this moment was to show us that they do understand and trust each other but with the lack of build up of their chemistry left this moment lacking for me. After this moment we are truly in the heart of the action of the story which deal with the rival clan and sexual abuse of the women who think they are entering into a nunnery (so trigger/content warnings around this). It is enjoyable to watch these two work together in these last moments, a know that they trust each other.

Overall a well written story that feels like a great first historical romance for someone interested in reading one. Also a great option if you are more of a plot driven reader who likes low steam.

3-3.5 star read for me, rounding up to 4.

I received a copy of this from BookSprout and this is my freely given opinion.

This was a bit of a slow going start for me, and I almost gave up after the first couple of chapters because it was a time period for me that I tend not to gravitate towards, the early 1700s, in Scotland. The characters did not initially feel like they had any chemistry, so it was a slow build for me, but then at about the 20% point, it clicked for me and I had to see where things would go.

Jory Mackintosh is a poor orphaned cousin who has been trying to save for a dowry to establish her future and find a good husband, rather than be stuck with a choice of her uncle. She thinks she would need a larger dowry than most as she is not so attractive because of her crooked spine. She is stymied quite badly when she finds out that her uncle has other plans for her and she is being sent away to be be a nun, with her dowry being sent to the abbey for her upkeep as a bride of Christ. This was not what she wanted and she schemes to get her dowry back so she can live independently.

Finn Shaw is a younger son labeled the Shaw Wretch after being blamed for a betrayal 10 years prior, when he was a 15 year old soldier who was supposed to be on watch, that lead to the death of others, including his brother. His reputation was mud and he is likewise treated like dirt, including by his clan laird, his surviving brother, Angus. He is given the lowly task of escorting Jory to the convent.

During their journey, they have a few adventures and learn more about each other. Jory and Finn are attracted to each other, but because they are at cross purposes, Jory also doesn't trust Finn and wants to get away from him as well. This leads to an interesting dynamic where sometimes they work together, and start to like and respect each other, but then they fight against each other too.

Ultimately, they find out that the Abbey that Jory is being sent to is not what it is portrayed to their clans, and Jory may be going into a dangerous situation. Finn learns that he cares for Jory quite a bit and wants to protect her and they work together to overcome a common enemy. Ultimately this earns Jory some independence and the ability to have a say in her future, and Finn's name and reputation are redeemed.

Jory and Finn ended up being warmly written, nuanced characters with an interesting intertwined history, and the story was laced with some very thoughtfully presented pieces of history at the time that I found quite interesting. As well, it was interesting how Jory's scoliosis was mixed in and how they have a shared interest in healing/helping others. Finn appears to have been pushed into the role of soldier when it was was a clan or family expectation of it, when it really seems like he has a talent for healing, and it is a shame that was not part of their HEA. Also, while the common enemy was ultimately vanquished, what I would have liked was a bit more detail on what happened to the individual and how the rest of their clan was involved or paid their dues.

It started out slow, but I was pretty taken with it and sold on it by the end.

4 stars out of 5

*Thank you to Netgalley and Xpresso Book Tours for this ARC*

trigger warning: this book contains references to sexual assault

Okay time to preface this review: going into this book I was ready to dislike it. As a Scottish reader it’s so hard to find Scottish romances by American authors that don’t rely on stereotypes, misrepresentations, the butchering of the Scots language, or just historical/cultural/geographical inaccuracies. I went in jaded, but with the open mindedness to admit i could be wrong about the genre.
I also am not a fan of one of the major romance motifs it includes which is the one bed trope.
In many ways I am not the ideal reader of this book so I will be trying to review this in a way that is mindful of these biases but is still honest to my opinion.
I wish I could say it changed my mind on the genre.
Okay let’s start with the writing: there was a decent attempt at scots, definitely got stronger as it went on, and the author definitely did her research which i appreciate. Did it rely a little on stereotypes? Yes. Was it to the point it was unreadable? Nowhere near. I found the writing overall sluggish to get through, just felt very wandering and slow. I feel like it would have worked stylistically if the plot had been more interesting. The plot too just wandered too much for me and never really reached anything that i found engaging.
I think it was written as character and relationship focussed rather than plot which is fair enough.
I like Jory at times, and I liked the scoliosis rep, but I just found her flat overall. Same with Finn, they both just lacked life. That in turn made their relationship feel lacklustre and lifeless.
I’m sad this review is so negative because I didn’t have a bad time reading it, but it overall just missed the mark from me.
I think it’s the start of a series? so hopefully the rest gets more into the flow.
I did really enjoy the setting, I thought (from a Scot who lived in Aberdeenshire) it was nicely done.
Like I said, I’m not the right reader for this book.

Fans of highlanders and Scottish historical are in for a treat with this new series!

In this series opener we are introduced the Mackintosh and Shaw clans as two clan misfits set out on an adventure together! Orphan Jory Mackintosh has dreamed of being a healer forever and has never thought of herself as the wifey type. Born with scoliosis she was the apple of her parents eyes, but now finds herself another burden on her uncles household… but she is still surprised to find out that instead of finding her a husband, her uncle has agreed to send her off to a secret convent run by a rival clan!

Finlay Shaw may be the brother of his clans laird, but instead of being known as the heir, he is the wretch! After a youthful indiscretion costs his clan many lives at war, he is orphaned and ostracized from his clan. Now only good enough for menial tasks, he is dispatched to escort Mistress Mackintosh across Scotland to her nunnery.

Jory and Fin have some wild adventures as they re-get to know each other and travel across treacherous countryside. From the hazardous environments to the dangerous inhabitants, these two learn each others strengths to not only reach the convent, but to uncover a mystery that restores their status within the clan… oh, and they fall in love along the way!

I really enjoyed the in-depth scenic and historical details included in this book. I had a real Outlander (without the time travel!) vibe as they traveled across the country together. I haven’t read a Scottish historical romance like this in a long time and it was really refreshing. So, if you are looking for a road trip through historic Scotland, this slow burn, fated mates romance is for you!

Mistress Mackintosh and the Shaw Wretch by Rose Prendeville

Thoroughly enjoyable way to spend the day today and a nice introduction to a new series.

What I liked:
* Finlay Shaw: youngest brother, living under a black cloud due to something that happened when he was fifteen, trying to find his place again in the clan, healing touch, kind, honest, gentle, feels drawn to Jory
* Jory Mackintosh: orphan, raised by her uncle’s family, well-liked by her cousins, healing abilities, has scoliosis, defensive, has dreams of studying medicine, acts before she thinks, feels drawn to Finn, has been told she will be a nun
* Finn’s friends who assisted when needed
* The childhood intersections and connections Finn and Jory shared
* The growth of the relationship as the journey toward the convent took place
* That the two became more trusting and better able to communicate over time
* The way their backstories influenced them
* That I felt the two were equally matched and well suited
* That the bad guys were exposed and thwarted
* The happy ending for the couple
* Reading a new-to-me author and knowing there is another book in the series to look forward to
* The cute cover

What I didn’t like:
* Who and what I was meant not to like
* Knowing that expectations of and for women (and men) in this era were often set in cement and not necessarily what they might have wanted

Did I enjoy this book? Yes
Would I read more in this series? Yes

Thank you to NetGalley and the author for the ARC – this is my honest review.

1725 in the Scottish Highlands. Jory Mackintosh and Finley Shaw (from separate clans) embark on a dangerous adventure. While this did have the makings of an epic story, there was just something lacking for me. This was not the swoon-worthy romance I was expecting. Finley, the Shaw Wretch, was adorable and a great hero (I'd classify him as a Beta). But he was kind and sweet and patient with Jory (when he massages her back, sigh). Jory, on the other hand, was very unlikable for most of the book. I liked that she was strong-willed, she didn't let her scoliosis stop her, but she was quite mean and distrustful of Finley for most of the book. She didn't listen and acted very childish.

I have to mention the cover. It's super cute. But it's also super misleading. Don't judge this book by that cover. It's a pretty serious book, the cover made me think there'd be a lot of humor and lightheartedness, which there was not. I know a lot of people are put off by these animated covers, and this is definitely one book where I do not think this type of cover works to its advantage, but that's just my two cents.

Try if you like road trips, forced proximity.

CW: rape (attempted), violence against women (on page)

3.5 stars. Rounding up because I'm feeling generous. I did enjoy the story, it was ambitious, and I will keep this author on my radar.

Thank you to NetGalley for an ARC of this book. The thoughts and opinions are my own and freely given.

Tropes: one bed, strangers to lovers

This novel initially was challenging for me to start with as the writing wasn't something I was used to. After the first chapter however it is nothing difficult and gives the novel some charm.

Jory Mackintosh is sent by her uncle to be a nun in a convent far away. Finn, the man she has adored from afar since she was a child is the man who has been chosen to deliver her. They are unaware of their roles in this exchange and the budding alliance in the regions. What sounds like a misogynistic story is actually a story that has our FMC empowered as she takes back her own choice.

Jory is our strong but stubborn heroine whose walls are thick. Finn, our charming hero is determined to give her the tools to empower herself, all the while staying by her side to offer support if and when she needs it. Our stubborn duo find themselves falling for each other (Again!) while they try to figure out how to get our heroine out of being a nun in the convent.

What ensues is a quick read on a journey that results in a happy ending for Jory and Finn, as well as their clans.

Jory Mackintosh is determined to seek out her future in a medical school, but her family has other plans for her. Finlay Shaw, the disgraced younger brother of the laird, finds himself order to escort Jory to her new life as a nun. In doing so, there will be an alliance with the freshly formed Black Watch, his final chance for redemption with his family. Yet Jory has no plans of assisting Finlay with his plans.
Trapped on the road together, often with only one bed between them, they must work together to face the secrets that have haunted them both for years. They must trust each other if they are to have any happiness or future.
A great story with two very appealing main characters. There is plenty of chemistry in this sweet story. Both Jory and Finlay bring with them an easy banter which develops into more as they journey together. A great start to what will be an interesting series.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book from NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

2.5 stars rounded to 3

The story follows Jory as she's being escorted to a nunnery by Finlay Shaw, the journey the two go on is filled with adventure, mishaps and after a while passion.

The book is set in the 1700s and I think it was a great setting for this tale, Jory is a strong-willed 22 year old who does not hold back when it comes to her opinions or ideas. On the otherhand we have Finlay Shaw who is a sweet man of 25 who has been tainted after the war in 1715 and is still paying the price.

I enjoyed the story but I did get lost in the dialogue from time to time which made it hard to follow, the use of Scottish language was a nice touch but also hard to follow, which means I had a hard time keeping up and remembering where I was in the story and made it a little bit too much of a drag to really love the story and the writing.

Thank you to NetGalley, Rose Prendeville and the publishers for the advanced review copy before release.

Arc Review

I will say this book was not as funny and light hearted as the cover made it seem. Not that there is anything wrong with that, I was just surprised! The book is dual pov so that was really good because this book is on the road pretty much the whole time so being able to know what each mc is thinking/feeling really helped make the connection between the two more understandable.

I will say that Jory was an enjoyable character for the most part she held on to her anger and distrust a little too long for me but I think Finlay picked up the slack and was a very sweet beta.

There is some mention of trauma happening in Jory’s past so it does kinda deal with some heavy topics.

The story over all was good. Just don’t do into it expecting a silly rom com, it has it moments but is more on the serious side.

Definitely recommend for those that like strong woman, sweet men, forced proximity and one bed trope give this book a go!
