I received a copy of Midnight Test in exchange for an Honest review!

The Midnight Test     Juliana Haygert
Hazel Rose Levine was a weak Witch, from a long line of less than stellar witches.  Her Mother was weak, her Sister Amanda was advanced above her, (but still weak compared to other Families)

She always lived under the Shadow of both her Sister's higher level, and her Mother's desire for status elevation among the Families of lesser power witches.  She decided to leave for College in New Orleans on a Scholarship in order to live a more normal life as a Regular Human, and at the same time, send Spirits on to the next destination, an ability she was very good at.

Her roommate, "Krissa," was more of a party girl who slept in late, and hated being woken early, but they learned to get along while Hazel ran into a sullen Good looking guy named Sean the night before classes started while she was in the middle of trying to trap a ghost.  He didn't seem very social, and she found out later that his Sister and best friend were killed in a haunted house one year before on Halloween.  Of course their paths were destined to cross again and again.

In the meantime, Hazel's Mother badgered her into contacting a powerful Witch Coven named "Lightgrove" hoping for an interview to test for admission to their apprenticeship program hoping to lead to full membership.  She was given a series of things to do when the veil was thin between the worlds.  She visits the Midnight Cauldron, a Voodoo Shop run by Khalisa, A Voodoo Priestess for the supplies she will need, and she also gives her something extra to aid her during the dangerous tasks ahead.

This was a bit of a slow start, but it suited it well for the buildup of tension, and then the change of fast paced action that followed.  My only complaint was the story was just getting really exciting, looking for the next shoe to drop and (Bang!) This Book Ended with me sticking my Tongue out at the Kindle.  This is the reason I've missed a new book from Juliana for a while, because she has some of the best timing of the Authors today.  She makes you want to strangle just one more page out of your Kindle so you can sleep tonight, but it also makes the next book all the more tasty!

DNF at 25%. This could be a fun book except that the author is Info dumping left and right. I just don't have the patience to listen to all of the history and mythology of this world.

The Midnight Test is an amazing addition to The Rite World.
He introduces us to Hazel who finally came to accept her reality, as a weak witch in order to move on and have a normal life, when she has an encounter with one of the witches of the powerful coven Lightgrove who entrusted them with a test that will change the destiny of their lifetime.
Excited Hazel does everything possible to meet the designated test and thus be able to enter the coven that I always dream of, in her mission she takes us on a tour of the city of New Orleans that fascinates and at the same time her relationship with the mysterious human Sean begins to develop. Sexy and haunted by events in the past, they will make Hazel more attracted to him, creating a situation from which she cannot escape.
The Midnight Test grabs you from the first word Juliana Haygert wrote and doesn't let you go until the last and when you finish it you want more. That ending makes you want more.

A beautiful witch story which stands on its own even so it is short. It can be read as a standalone but if Mrs. Haygert decided to make a series out of it that would be awesome as well.
Somehow the protagonists are fully formed and the plot is engaging. The end is satisfying but leaves an opening for more.

What a wonderful beginning to another great series. We meet Hazel who’s not as strong a witch but perhaps she’ll learn to accept who she is. Definitely enjoyable.

Hazel is a witch from a weak line of witches. When she moves to New Orleans for college her mother insists she contact the Lightgrove Coven and request an audience. It’s the most powerful coven and she wants her daughter to be in it no matter what. When the coven finally contacts her she is given what appears to be an impossible task to prove herself for the chance to become a member. On Friday the Thirteenth she must go around the city and close the cuts where the ghosts from the other side could pass through. Interwoven with this test and her destiny is a handsome yet mysterious guy. Sean Flaherty was involved in a supernatural event that left two dead and him thought a murderer or crazy. Now his nightmare and Hazel’s test are intertwined along with a warming from a witch doctor that the place is full of powerful spirits especially on Friday the Thirteenth.
The history/mythos of the story is fascinating. It’s like a combo of the Salem Witch hunts and The Spanish Inquisition never ended and this Brotherhood of Purity still hunts to this day. Witches and other supernaturals live in plain sight to blend in with the norms and avoid the hunters.
This is a really really good book. Lots of action, a little romance, mystery and tons of supernatural events. I very much liked Hazel and her determination. She’s unapologetically herself and very relatable. The blossoming possibility of romance between her and Sean is sweet. The complexity of the supernatural world living in conjunction with the non paranormal one is intriguing. So many secrets hinted at I cannot wait to see what’s next in this series!!.

Hazel is a witch. All her family too, but they are weak. She is the weakest of them, so she has given up being a witch and decided to be a simple young woman. To achieve this, she got herself a scholarship to Towland University in New Orleans. Her only "witch work" is helping release ghosts that are stucked in this realm.

To make her mother happy, she accepted sending a request to the Lightgrove coven to join them. But her options were bad at best, and after 2 months of not getting any answers she had assumed failure, until one of her ghost hunting sessions is interrupted by Lenora, one of the Lightgrove coven council members, inviting her to a meeting.
"Students milled in the hallways and lobby of my building, probably planning on getting together for an early fun night. After all, we were in college in New Orleans. Who wasn't partying? Me, that was who. Instead, I hunted ghosts and went crazy overthinking an upcoming magical test."
The Lightgrove coven gives her a test that will change her life. But a book like this is not complete if we don't have the love interest.

Sean is a (extremely handsome) bad boy that everyone thinks is absolutely broken, and he actually is. But obviously, he being a bad boy is only a facade. I don't think I need to say more, I loved him 😂.
"I nodded to myself, making a mental note to never mess with fucked up guys again. Lesson learned."
This was a nice reading, really fast. It has (almost) insta-love, badass girl that doesn't believe in herself, bad guy that is not really bad, ghosts (good and bad), a magical test, witch hunters and gowns. The last point may not be really important to the story, but I love balls 😅.

Super recommended read. I love witches but haven't found books that I really love about them, i hope this serie will be one that I truly love. My only critic would be that it was too short 🥺. I'm looking forward to read the next one.

I’m new to Juliana Haygert. I saw Tested as a freebie sale on Kindle and since the publisher’s blurb was interesting I figured “why not”? Well, I’m glad I did. The 19-Year old lead character here, Hazel, is a great character. Gutsy, full of spunk and determination, she totally reminds me of my own 19 year old daughter (except for the whole magic thing that is). I loved following along as she dealt with everything thrown at her and interacted with the pretty darn great cast of supporting characters created by the author. Added to a well-crafted world and solid writing, and the result is a real winner.

Definitely recommended.

Dark tidings in New Orleans...

(rounded up from 3.5)

I previously met Hazel, Sean and the Lightgrove Witches in the short story "Tested" - which this is expanded from. I enjoyed the taste of the world and meeting Hazel as she's caught between wanting to be a witch and wanting to be a human.

A choice made easier before the events of this book, as she's pretty weak so no big powerful coven would take her seriously. If indeed she wanted them to, as mostly she keeps trying to keep her mother happy.

Hazel is young, 18 and just starting college, though at times I felt like Haygert wanted Hazel to be older, in her mid-20s. Its hard to pin down why - there's nothing saying an 18 year old can't be called stunning or gorgeous by a few different characters - but it felt off.

She also acts both much more maturely the you'd expect a small town, relatively sheltered 18yo new to a busting city like New Orleans to sct, but has moments of very teen-coded behavior. So it was a little confusing.

As to the story - still enjoyed it. Loved how she accepted she wasn't very powerful and learned how to leverage it with amplifiers. The ghost hunting side gig was interesting (though I'm not entirely clear on why it was her "duty" as it seemed dangerous at her level) and while Sean is fine as a love interest, I wasn't digging the "She's All That" nature of the Ball.

Yes we get it - you're different with your tattooes and piercings and hair. Your love of black and dark colors. One wonders why its okay for her to flaunt what must have been a tradition so openly (ie: the dress) when clearly no one else did.

In the end however I want to see where this goes for Hazel, and that makes it worth investing in.

A delightful story. Hazel is especially awe inspiring. She works so hard to accomplish her role as a benefactor to wayward ghosts. She clearly accepts her limitations as a weak witch with rather minimal power. She's also drawn to Sean, the broken soul who lost his sister and best friend a year ago. But, by the end of the story, she's learning that family and friends are jealous of her which makes her uncomfortable. The end of the story was a complete surprise and yet it didn't feel like a cliffhanger: more of a foreshadowing of something to come.

Easy-to-read. Entertaining. Great world building. Haunting. Inspirational. Romantic. Scary. Unpredictable. Wonderful characters.

I received a review copy of this book from a third party. This is my honest review.

Hazel is a light witch who has been led to believe she should live life as a normal person but then the light grove witches give her a challenging assignment to prove she can join their coven. Hazel is a very strong witch and human that I could really look up to.

We go back to the Riteworld universe and this time it’s to the lightgrove witches and I warn you , once you pick this up you will be drawn in hook, line and sinker. This is Hazel’s story and it’s incredible. She has little power and so is determined to live her life as a normal human when the powerful Lightgrove Coven grant her a very rare chance to join them so long a she passes a dangerous test. It’s an exciting read full of magic, romance, mystery and adventure and I am anxious to read more.

Itching for more!

Its a little gauche to compare two stories by different authors with different aims in mind, but bear with me.

This story - about a weak(ish) witch in training trying her hardest - hit all the right notes for a novella. We got a good sense of Hazel, a good sense of the world and some cute moments with her love interest. In what Amazon claims is 75pgs if physical.

Compared against a story I read just before this - about a young vampire, risking everything for love (and losing) - of a similar length, but far more shallow.

While I won't say TESTED is perfect, it was engaging and has me wanting to learn more about the world and history, though as far as I can tell this is a standalone novella not part of any of her established series. However, having enjoyed this I'm going to check out her other books now!

Such an amazing start with loveable characters, Hazel the main character accepts who she is as a weaker witch (for now....??) There so much more to her story that I can not wait to find out about, the progression is real, and I can't wait to continue following her journey.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I have read & I love the entire Rite World series. This one did not disappoint, & I can't wait for book 2.

While I'm way too old for Ms Haygert's target audience (63), I still really enjoy her writing. Great stories, & the main characters become real.

In this one, Hazel is a young witch who hasn't really fit in anywhere. Teens on the punk rock side will relate to her. Before the book is over, she gains a large amount of her power, is well on the path to falling in love, & making an interesting & enjoyable life for herself.

I also really like that in the current YA fantasy genre, Women are not only often powerful, but they are often more powerful than the surrounding Men. Perhaps by the time Gen Z grows up, the e.r.a. will be unnecessary.

Fast, easy & fun read (My only complaint is the book is short, I read it twice before leaving this review).

And we're left with quite a cliffhanger. Can't wait for the followup, & I plan to continue to read all of Ms Haygert's work except some of her hard core romance series' (not my genre).

I just started re-reading Juliana's The Fireheart Chronicles, have read the Everlast Series & also have started the Breaking Series. One of my favorite authors in the genre along with Dima Zales, Deborah Harkness & JA Cipriano.

*Was given a copy from the author in exchange for my honest review*

Last year I got a copy of the Midnight Kiss Collection, which this story was apart of before it was published on its own, and I read most of it before life got too busy for me to finish it. I felt bad for not finishing because I was enjoying it immensely, so I picked up my iPad and started reading it again.

I would absolutely love it if Mrs. Haygert wrote a series for Hazel and Sean because at the end of Tested I felt like I was losing a couple of friends. The pacing was great though the romance part felt a little fast for me but everything else I couldn't get enough of! Especially the unexpected twist on why this mansion Hazel has to visit is truly haunted. I enjoyed that turn of events and I was pulled deeper into the story when I didn't even think was possible.

Overall, this was a fun short and I really do wish Mrs. Haygert either wrote a series for Hazel and her adventures (cause being a witch and ghost hunting, I'm sure she has a few) or just write a series about another witch and her adventures because she truly knows how to write magical fun. Couldn't get enough!

This was a fantastic fast & furious read, and a great introduction to a new series.
Hazel, a witch without any extraordinary magic, just a sparks of power at her fingertips, is now facing the biggest opportunity of her life - and maybe also the biggest challenge. The possibility to join the Lightgrove coven is like a dream, however to make the dream come true, she must pass the Midnight Test - a dangerous, ghost-hunting mission to prove her worth.
I really liked the way Hazel was discovering herself and her capability in this book, and also stayed true to herself at the same time, unwilling to change her style or attitude because other people or some norms expected it. Also the development of her romantic interest felt very natural, and Sean is an alluring character to say the least. It was truly a magical read.

No question, I FLOVE this book!
I’ve read this story when it was first released as a novella in the Midnight Kisses collection, and when it was released individually as Tested, and Hazel’s story has always been fascinating and left me wanting more. This newest incarnation is no different, and the expansion of the story has me just as hooked as ever. Hazel’s journey of self-discovery while completing her initiation trial for entrance into the Lightgrove coven is engaging and I canNOT wait for the next installment and the continuation of the Lightgrove series.
Knowing that there’s more to Hazel’s story than even this expanded version has me hyped up all over again. Highly recommend this witch-centered paranormal, YA urban fantasy set in New Orleans, which now has a tie-in from Juliana’s Demon Hunter series!

ARC for an honest Review.... This story is based on a witch getting better as she ages. There seems to be a kind and simple life in the beginning for Hazel. It gets better as Hazel's witchy spells & potions are used to banish off the bad people. She finds out that there's a test for her to join an elite team - I want to know more about this part if possible.... I'm wishing it was a longer story cus it doesn't seem to be long enough for this first part. I'm looking forward for the next best bits. Thanks Juliana for this arc & your patience for my review.

This book was short but in some other ways sad and loving. I cried when Hazel was about to set Lisa free and that Sean and Lisa didn't have any time together after he realized that she was a ghost. To be honest I am really impressed with how the book ended and how good Hazel felt to actually have a relationship with someone who knows who she is and is not scared and they can be happy together.

Love this book hope others love it just as I did. 💕
