Thought this started so good but then the story went from focusing on the couple to spending time on the crazed ex. I did like that Cross was an athlete that fell for a regular girl. Genesis wore me out at times feeling like she wasn’t worthy. I was thinking, girl go on an get your man! Whew 😰- the sexual chemistry her Cross & Genesis was also good and appreciated. This was my first time reading this author and I’m looking forward to more.
I'm really trying to figure out why the reviews were so mixed. This book was well written and to me was a solid example of a good Sports romance.
Christian "Cross" Upton was a famous NBA player, one of the more popular ones in the league. He had been wasting space with Maggie, a model, for the past 6 years. They hadn't been exclusive for the past 4, but she knew his family and was often his plus one to events. Maggie was a piece of work, out the gate I didn't like her at all. She was giving fake, phony, fraudulent and I struggled to see why Chris entertained her. Especially when her bougie azz wasn't even nice to his family.
When going to celebrate his new teammates birthday, he ended up crossing paths with Genesis, a sports nutritionist and chef, that just happened to be the baby sister of his new teammate. After a crazy situation they end up spending time together as friends and Genesis eventually becomes his chef. I love when the mmc falls first and Chris fell hard, but almost nonchalantly. The way they showed up for each other definitely had those around them knowing they were bound to be more. Chris was very protective of his Gee money.
The way Maggie didn't know how to read the room or gtfo was annoying. It seemed like she didn't really want to be with him, but felt entitled to him. Very mentally unstable and I wish we would've gotten more closure around that situation. She was a pesty fly that needed to be swatted and he got some retribution but not enough in my opinion.
I love sport romantic based books. Football, basketball, hockey, check even golf. I am a sports chick. Chris Cross is basketball royalty. His mess thing,Maggie wants him and doesn't no the meaning of the word no. Genise is sweet and doing her job as a personal chef and sports nutritionist. Happenstance brings them together. It's a swift story and I'm good for it. It just seems like such something would happen and we did not get a clear understanding. Like spoiler alert Gen Money gets cold feet and does not talk to CJ for a few days. Ok we find out because he is going hard in a California game. He is upset, but we never really get her side or that it happened. There are a few other things that make me feel a bit incomplete in the story. We never really know what happens with Maggie. I felt like she was in the storyline too long. She was good for a minute then it's just annoying. I wanted more of their story to develop than focusing on Maggie.
I really enjoyed this instalove/friend little sister romance. I felt Genesis was very naive and she got on my nerves something serious. I would’ve preferred that the book focused more on their romance and connect than the crazy obsessed ex. The shenanigans literally took over the book
This was a very good story. I like the face the Cross.did not let Maggie affect his game and his relationship with Gensie.Maggie needed some help from a professional. It seems like she was obsesses with Cross and she just didn't understand that the relationship.they had had been over. She just could not let go of what was. Can't wait for the next book in this series.
If I could give half stars, this would be 3.5. It’s an interesting slow burn, where Cross and Genesis take a while to build up, but in the first two chapters, he is intimate on the page with his ex/friend Maggie. The relationship with Maggie is why I don’t rate this higher. I just don’t get it. They have been broken up for three years. His family didn’t like Maggie, yet he kept bringing her to their events. Why did he need a plus one at family functions? In chapter one, Cross says they broke up because of s*x, so why did he spend three extra years occasionally having s*x with her? The stuff with Maggie doesn’t make sense to me, but she is the conflict in this story. If other woman drama was going to be the tension in this book, it could’ve been done better.
Maggie and her foolishness were allowed to go on entirely too long. (The only benefit was that her pop-up art Thanksgiving prompted Genesis to get on birth control. Chris essentially trying to trap her after being told repeatedly why it is not a good idea was gross to me). Chris kept responding to her messages and allowed her to speak with too many times. After the car window incident, he should have gone no-contact complete with a restraining order. And to think all that foolishness and we get no resolution. I could add numerous additional things about why this book and both main characters irritated me.
I rounded up my 3.75 rating for this book by NTM author, Ms. Gray.
Pros: Christian and his unwavering confidence in himself and what he wanted I'm their relationship. Solid supporting characters. Well-written.
Cons: Way too long. Maggie was allowed to go way too far with her mess. It didn't even seem warranted with the lack of connection between her and CC. And that nickname was so lame. I could see being leery about starting up such a new relationship with CC, especially given the mess wjth Mags, but Genesis' insecurities and agnst was also unwarranted. Nothing about Maggie's weird self should have had her cowering and questioning CC's interest in her to the extent that it did. CC was a good dude to keep affirming her and with so much patience. We never did see the so-called lioness within Gen. There was too much talk and not enough action from any of the characters - except Mags delusional self. All that long, drown out relationship development between CC & Gen, then an anticlimactic, abrupt ending. No epilogue, just note from author saying there'll be more on the couple in the next book. Uhn unh. That's not how it should be done. Finish this one, then give little updates throughout the next one tying them together. Or just finish this one and move on completely.
If it comes across my suggestions I *might* read the next one, but I'm not making any particular effort to make sure I do. This author has a lot to offer, so no regrets.
I don’t even know where to start!!!!! This was my first read by Tracy and BABY I’m headed to download my next. I won’t give any spoilers (at least I’ll try not to) but Christian Christian Christian…..jeez. Now he really pissed me off in the beginning because he knew Maggie was not for him and like most he just kept going along with it because of familiarity. The way kept giving her too many chances I could’ve shook him. However enters the picture Genesis aka Gensie aka Gee Money. A get money, boss babe not looking to ride the coattails of anyone although she had the space and opportunity to do so.
I’m so glad he found someone else that balanced him out, added value to his life and his career and also help him to see that he wanted something different, needed something different.
Now I must admit, I loved Genesis from the beginning, but she did irritate me just a bit, which as a woman I can understand because we can sometimes second-guess and question logic and the things that are happening around us but I can say that I’m so glad she did not give up on him and she came to her senses and allowed herself to trust in not only him but herself as well to have sound judgment, mindset, and a clear conscience to know that she deserved everything he gave.
This was so good that I was actually impressed because it is a new author for me and I usually don’t have much expectation when trying to a new author but this one did it for me. I’m excited to see the next level of their relationship in the 2nd installment of the series.
I started off REALLY loving this and enjoying the bond that Christian and Genesis were building with each other but it got to a point in the story where I got frustrated with Christian. I guess since I could understood where Genesis was coming from with her insecurities I didn’t find her to be as annoying as some others have mentioned. What annoyed me most about this entire book was how Christian kept handling/interacting with Maggie.
!!!Spoiler warning!!!
I hated how Genesis established that she didn’t want to be in the middle of whatever it was Christian and Maggie had going on and how she told him she probably couldn’t handle his world and yet when she was upset about things that popped up BECAUSE OF HIS ISSUES WITH MAGGIE he’d tell her he didn’t have time to walk her through every relationship pitfall and she needed to grow up and be his “peace.” ARE YOU SERIOUS?! It just felt like all this stress of not only being with a famous person, but also dealing with said person’s famous crazy ex, was put onto Genesis who was living a relatively normal life and he was constantly telling her to get over her feelings and just be his rock because HE needed her to be stable for HIM so he could be happy and that really took me out of the story multiple times.
All in all though, since this started off so strong I would give it 3.5 stars and will definitely consider reading another book from this author!
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
This was a good quick read. The overall story was enjoyable. I liked Cross, he seemed genuinely down to earth and I love how close he was with his family. I liked how his relationship with Gensie developed. It didn’t come off as instalove to me, it read more as they just vibed quickly since they had somewhat known each other and she understood his lifestyle because of her brother. Even if it wasn’t always explicitly stated, there also had to have been a whole year that passed between the end of one season and the end of the next.
Gensie did annoy me sometimes with how she carried herself. There were moments when she came across as super fragile which I didn’t really understand. With the way they grew up and her brother also being in the NBA she had to have developed thicker skin than she let in a few times. Maggie also annoyed me because what was her purpose? If she was going to be a stalker could we have found out what her deal actually was? It felt slightly unfinished but it wasn’t terrible.
In general I liked the story. This was my first venture with this author and I’d definitely give her books another go. There were some elements I really loved and we support all the black book girlies over here!
Tropes Basket ball romance (NBA) Player x personal chef Friend and teammates little sister Found family OTHER WOMAN DRAMA THE ENTIRE LENGTH OF THE BOOK
I wanted to love this so bad, and it had the potential to have a much higher rating. I liked Christian, their spice was spicing, their friend groups (Kirbie and his sisters were with all the shits), and I liked the found family aspect
Now for what I didn’t like .. - Genesis was getting a little irritating with feelings of self doubt, not feeling worthy and like she’s enough, and her inability to communicate.. I’m glad Christian finally got through to her but dang - THE OTHER WOMAN DRAMA THAT RAN THE LENGTH OF THE WHOLE BOOK! - the main focus of the book was more so set on/around Maggie and her bs instead of Christian and Genesis and their love story - the fact that Christian let Maggie get away with her antics for literally the whole book. He definitely could’ve put a stop to her - the ending was very anticlimactic.. no epilogue showing them getting married, seeing if they were actually pregnant, and we didn’t get to see the phone interview he did
First time reading this author and my goodness what a goodie it was…. I have to say that besides a good interracial (bwwm genre) and some black romance, a sports romance story rounds up my to 3 favorites, specially when it’s well researched, well developed and well written from a good penmanship author. MS. Gray is all that! CJ was the best. For sure the best book bae for this month (so far) and so much BDE that I felt that it was I receivinghis undivided attention. Genesis girl…humm… you actually got lucky that MS. Gray took pity on you because believe you me, you would have been chopped liver with Maggie. You was stupid, childish and erased. On a lighter note, I truly like all of the surrounding characters and I really wanted an epilogue with Genesis being pregnant with twins and giving Christian the news as a wedding gift on the day of the wedding. Bon I must see if I can get the second book yet to get some info on these two.
This was a great read, a book that you could read multiple times and still enjoy something new. CJ and Gensie were so good together, and they were written with beautiful realism. The reactions to situations were natural and heartfelt. They were truly complementary to each other and written to enhance each other as individuals to become better people and discover what they were missing and needed in this world. The romance the bloomed out of true friendship was sweet and sexy. The auxiliary characters were each entertaining and well written...even if you didn't like them...Maggie was truly messed up and desperately needed help. The family interactions were hilarious 😂 while also exposing destructive dynamics that can plague a family. This was indeed a great read 📚 👏🏾❣️
I think the beginning could have been a bit more fleshed out. I felt like I missed where Christian became interested in Genesis. It just went from them meeting to them liking each other.
Christian was a solid dude. I liked him, except for the whole Maggie situation. Why continue to be around her if you didn't like her and you knew she was just using you? Nobody in your family liked her so why let her tag along to family functions? and Maggie was around way toooooo long. All those pop ups she was doing shouldn't have gotten that far.
Genesis was cool in the beginning. She was able to talk sports with him and have Christian's back when he needed support. But when things got tough Genesis wanted to run. She was annoying at times. Like Christian said "put your big girl panties on".
This would have been a 4 star if the Maggie portion of the book was so long.
I liked this but I feel like too much of the book focused on Christian's relationship with the ex. The first 10% of this book was strictly Christian with his ex Maggie. I think their story maybe could have been told through dialogue with other characters or maybe even interactions with the ex AFTER the breakup and subsequent introduction of the main characters' relationship. But at times it felt like Genesis and Christian's love story was secondary to his relationship with Maggie which is not what I look for in a romance. Other than that I did really like the writing and the characters.
I liked the story but it was difficult to get through due to editing. This book had a lot of grammar and punctuation issues. Words used in the wrong context, words that shouldn't be capitalized, poor sentence structure, etc. This isn't the worse edit I've ever seen but it definitely wasn't good. I'd like to continue the series, but only if there's an improvement in the writing. I get the brother not wanting to use the n-word but the substitute word he used sounded dumb. Why not say ace, dawg, or my guy?
Entertaining, sports romance are one of my favs. The author did a great job of pacing the story. But as a previous reviewer said, I wish Maggie’s shenanigans hadn’t taken up so much space in the story.
Had it not, I would’ve rated it 4 stars. But we didn’t stop talking about her until a few pages before the story wrapped. Overall I enjoyed the story. I’m interested in what happens between Chance and Kirbie. I was hoping that would’ve been introduced here, but oh well.
This was my first read by the author, but I’m definitely reading more.
Loved the storyline. Sports romance are always a favorite. Only thing I didn’t like was some of the timelines. Did Chris and Maggie date for 18 months, 2 years or 3 years? The time frame changed throughout the book. Was Chris 26 or 29? Other than those things again I liked it. Really loved Genesis and the fact that we got to see her come into herself throughout the story.
Loved, loved this story. Loved how Christian and Genesis were friends before starting a romantic relationship. The chemistry was off the chain between these two. Loved how despite the issues they were faced with they faced them together. Seeing him protect her both mentally and physically was so endearing. The transparency and honest conversations were refreshing. This story was very well written and pulled you in from beginning to end!
This was okay I guess, the Maggie situation was really over done to me and not realistic that she would do what she was doing and suffered no consequences. Chris was a punk with her when he really should have been and shut her down, and he could have with all that she'd been doing. I wish it would have expounded on the family issues a little more, probably would make the story a bit more interesting. This was borderline cookie cutter, which made it boring.
Maggie gots to be the wicked witch of the west the way these niggas keep her name in they mouth shit I think I heard that bitch name more than Genesis and she the FML 🙄 like why she out here stalking this fucking man that bitch been on my phone since the first page ain’t no reason for her to be in this book so long I’m tired the romance was nice but I truly dreaded finishing this book bc of the Maggie storyline
Super model thought she secured the bag..but the gag is…oops! This was definitely a page turner because Maggie should’ve caught some hands plenty of times. Chris Cross, now you know you were stepping wrong and should have nipped all of that in the bud. I really liked Genesis, she seemed really down to earth. There were a few times I wanted her to regulate but I liked her. Great book, not too heavy on the drama. I need to see what happens so on to book 2 I go.
I really enjoy sport related stories and this one was awesome. Too bad it ended without before all the things discussed happened. I was totally grateful for the basketball scenes. Right down my alley. Of course there was a villain in here and I was waiting for her to get her due justice. Too bad this came to an end. Great story!
I sure did enjoy this love story of who happened to be a chief and world-class basketball star. And it is such a beautiful love story in the midst of them being who they are a great chief and a world-class basketball player. Love kept them despite of the ups and downs past and family dysfunction.
Whew, chile. This book has a lot going on. You’ve got crazy ex-girlfriends with stalker tendencies, gossip sites, good sex and some serious food porn. Do not read this book hungry! I enjoyed this story enough but not sure I’ll read book 2. I’m not that interested in knowing how things end up with these characters.
Cute and romantic sports romance, excellent chemistry, absolutely magic! The intimate scenes were magic, sexy and sensual. Pacing of the story, the dialogue, and supporting characters were good. I enjoyed from beginning to end. This is a good read.
I liked the book. The drama with Maggie went on way too long. Would have liked to have seen more of the romance with Genesis and Chris. Didn’t get enough about Genesis. Wanted to read more about her catering business.
Christian and Genesis story line was so good. Even though the drama with the ex pissed me off it was still a good read. The ex should have gotten a beat down like in the WWE. Look forward to reading this author work again.
It’s my first time reading this author. I enjoyed the story. It was well written and very entertaining. I’m looking forward for what’s to come as the series continues. I also plan to read more work in this author’s catalog.
