3 September 2018. Citizens of India woke up to the sensational news of a multimillion-dollar theft in the Nizam’s Museum, Hyderabad. The theft of a diamond-studded, intricately designed gold box and other artifacts speckled with emeralds and rubies caused a national and international sensation. This was no ordinary burglary. It was an assault on the heritage and culture of the people of Hyderabad and India.
Prince Muffakham Jah of Hyderabad, who was in London at that time, personally requested the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Anjani Kumar, to investigate the case on priority. Hundreds of police officers were pressed into action to recover the stolen objets d’art. Unfortunately for them, the thieves had been smart and left little evidence behind them. Most clues that the police uncovered during the investigation led to more confusion rather than any conclusion.
The Commissioner personally led an elite team to investigate this theft and recover the items. He knew that recovering the stolen assets would be a challenging proposition, given that, historically, hardly any items stolen from museums across the world had ever been recovered. The Hyderabad Heist is the story of how the Hyderabad Police worked diligently, made the most out of the little evidence available, and raced against time to recover the artifacts before they could be smuggled abroad and lost forever.

THE HYDERABAD HEIST: The Untold Story of India’s Biggest Museum Theft

🏰Prince Muffakham Jah of Hyderabad, who was in London at that time, personally requested the Commissioner of Police, Anjani Kumar, to investigate the case on priority. Hundreds of police officers were pressed into action to recover the stolen objets d’art. Unfortunately for them, the thieves had been smart and left little evidence behind them. 🏰This would be a challenging proposition, given that, historically, hardly any items stolen from museums across the world had ever been recovered. The Hyderabad Heist is the story of how the Hyderabad Police worked diligently, made the most out of the little evidence available, and raced against time to recover the artifacts before they could be smuggled abroad and lost forever.
🏰The theft came to light on September 3, 2018 morning after museum staff found a one-foot-high golden food box encrusted with diamonds and rubies, a golden spoon, and two cups and saucers missing. The antique items belong to the seventh Nizam.
🏰This non-fiction based on the true events in Hyderabad focuses on the heist staged at Nizam’s museum. Recovery from Museum theft is extremely rare and this case is one of the extensively extraordinary cases in which stolen artifacts were recovered. This book portrays the minute details of the incident and is ornamented with the interesting historical essence of this museum and its artifacts. The writing tone of this book stands so livable that the procedure of the investigation is intriguing. This book also tossed a glare at the pathetic condition of our culturally significant artifacts and monuments. This book includes pictures for better visual clarity about the plot and the story.
🏰For me, a few initial pages were relatively ordinary I would say, but the blurb compelled me to push the boundaries, and later it gave me adequate amusement and excitement. It's undoubtedly a pleasure to read about the rip-off and how the perpetrators were snagged.
This is a true story that will make you grip your seats and read on. And the reason for the theft, will blow your mind. The author has done an excellent job of gathering data and weaving them into a story.
“Criminals who steal high-value artworks tend to be better thieves than businessmen. They don't understand that the true art in a heist isn't stealing, it's selling.”
When I first got this book, I was so excited that I avoided reading anything about it online, as it focused on the heist that happened at the Nizam's Museum, Hyderabad in 2018. As Sharmishtha Shenoy is renowned for her historical fiction, Vikram Rana Mystery series, I ‘assumed’ that this book is also a work of fiction. You can imagine my surprise when I finished it and found out it was actually non-fiction. I had been reading it as if it were historical fiction, and it was so captivating that I never even suspected it was non-fiction. Now, I don't think I need to convince you more to read it based on its writing style.
The book starts with two petty criminals stealing a gold tiffin box, along with a gem-encrusted cup and saucer, belonging to the VII Nizam. As soon as the theft was discovered Prince Muffakham Jah of Hyderabad personally requested the Commissioner of Police, Anjani Kumar, to investigate the case on priority. The investigation turned out to be more challenging than anticipated, as there were very few instances where stolen museum artifacts were successfully recovered, except for the case at the Louvre Museum involving the theft of the Mona Lisa painting, where the prime suspect was Pablo Picasso (can't believe it). Focusing on the theft Shenoy shows us the glimpse of both worlds; the police system and the tangled web of the criminals of Hyderabad. Shenoy provides a thorough account of the theft, the investigation, the motivations and mindset of the thieves, and the police's strategy for capturing the criminals and recovering the stolen items.
The Hyderabad Heist is exceptionally well-written and highly captivating. I would recommend this book to history lovers, true crime thriller lovers, and to everyone who enjoys a good book.
Cool look at a heist I didn’t know happened in my hometown. I liked having a glimpse into both the crime and the investigation. Narrative was compelling; narration less so.

'It's a call from London, Sir. Prince Muffakham Jah of Hyderabad is calling', his personal assistant (PA) informed him in an awestruck voice."
This book talks about one of the biggest thefts in the history of India - The Nizam Museum case that occurred on the 3rd of September, 2018.
The whole of Hyderabad was shocked to witness the robbery of several expensive, antique heritage artifacts, studded with diamonds, emeralds and rubies in the early hours of the day.
The author has explained the A-Z scenario of what exactly happened, how the theft was discovered, what happened next, the investigation, the background of the two masterminds Ghulam and Badshah and their motive behind the heist. I really liked the way Sharmishtha has put forth all the incidents pin to pin, in a very detailed and an easy manner. There is also a note by the Former Commissioner of Police, Mr. Anjani Kumar, who led the case. Highly intriguing.

Hooter: The retelling of the biggest museum heist including Nizam's treasures in Hyderabad
This is one of the first in the Indian domain to be a replay of a solved museum robbery mystery. Researching from the police records , interviews and probably the criminals - Sharmishtha plays back the entire robbery and the process the police go through to solve this mystery in record time. Whilst the planning and background of the two robbers is a delightful set up like any fiction crime caper - the way the cops go about the investigation details also makes for a good read. I somehow felt the ending was abruptly quick and tame - which is fine because that is how the true story unravelled but the writing pace and tepidness towards that ending slowed down the wonderful momentum the initial setup provided.
Nice high paced narrative. Have to give credit to the author for converting what essentially was a procedural police case into a high octane chase.
A few pointers nonetheless :
1. The case was no doubt VERY IMPORTANT for the national pride & considering the percentage of success of stolen artifact cases worldwide, it was an ASTOUNDING success for Police Commissioner - Anjani Kumar.
2. The case points out quite brusquely how EASY it is to steal even from a high profile museum & how easy it would have been if Badshah & Mubeen used a little grey matter while dealing with the stolen goods.
3. The case also underlines how IGNORANT & CASUAL we are while handling historical & cultural artifacts. Because if it was not the case, people would have remembered of the incident.
If you are into thrillers/suspense/true-crime, I have a recommendation for you. Bestselling author, Sharmishta Shenoy's latest offering is a thrilling ride. It is true-crime novel based on the infamous Museum theft case in Hyderabad. Writing a true-crime book comes with great responsibility and it was handled exceptionally well by the author. The book is thoroughly researched and told from the viewpoint of former Hyderabad Police Commissioner, Anjani Kumar. Going through the book gives the vicarious feeling of living that race against time of recovering the artifacts. What is remarkable about the book is that it gives you both sides of the story in one book. Exceptional work yet again from the author.

I remember the news article about the theft, which was why I picked up the book. Unfortunately, the story lacks enough material to make it into a novel. It felt like a regional TV series episode with 1 page of script that goes on for an hour. If the content would've been better edited it would have been mildly interesting. I would say, just go read the newspaper article.
