Best one yet
I absolutely adore this series, there's something anything having a human be the protagonist in a world of hidden supernaturals that gives them a special edge.
This one is my favourite so far, drawing on Welsh mythology heavily to explore changelings and lake fae.
As Matt and Lachlan continue their hunt for the missing Wyn, they run across more potential issues and set off on a search for kidnapped children.
With the same humour as the rest of this world, there's a wonderful warmth that comes throughout the storytelling, even when the subjects being dealt with aren't as pleasant.
One more to go in this series and I'll be sad to see it end.

Cute, but still slow burn as in no romance pretty much haha soooo it’s pretty much a mystery with hints of pining haha
Overall a cute but forgettable story in my opinion, but Greg Boudreaux’s accents are definitely memorable 🔥

E.J. Russell has created such a fun series with Quest Investigations! Creative characters, witty dialogue, and clever mysteries. I'm loving the way Hugh is gaining confidence, and the relationships are building. The story is progressive, so start with Five Dead Herrings - and do yourself a favor and try it in audio. Greg Boudreaux's performances are amazing!

Two stars for the first half, four stars for the second half.
Sorry to say, as I believe I have in the past, this spinoff of Fae Out of Water and Supernatural Selection, both favorite series, just bores me to tears. And I hate saying that as I adore EJ Russell who has written some of my favorite stories. Quest Investigations stories are unevenly paced and I just don't find Matt/Hugh all that interesting (let me just interject that I adore Zeke, Jordan, and the fabulous Doop! And Herne!). Anyway, moving on...

Audiobook Review
I enjoyed this one, mainly because of Greg Boudreaux's narration, as the first 80% was boring because I did not understand the backstory details. While this book is a spin-off of previous books, it has mostly stood up as standalones. Until this one.
Anyways, in here we have Matt-Hu, still pining for his selkie (still nothing happening between them because of the whole marriage and stuff) who gets tossed onto a case because the owners suddenly lost their minds, like none of that made sense, but still, they finally admitted that there was a Scooby gang
Side note, I love Jordan so much that the wolf shifter better be in the next series.
The mystery in this one was about kidnapped children and secrets. I'll be honest, I'm only reading to see Matt-Hu get his happily ever after.

This third installment of the Quest Investigations series might be my favorite so far. This is a series that has to be read in order, and it’s part of the author’s larger Mythmatched Universe. Personally, I think having read the other books in the universe adds some extra nuance to some of the secondary plot points in this book, but objectivelym it’s not necessary to have read any of them as long as you’ve been following this series.
Russell has a knack for dropping just the right amount of humor at just the right moments to make these books a truly entertaining read and I think it’s especially well showcased in this book. As with the other books in this series, the mystery of the moment is the major plot line, and the romance takes a backseat, which the author made clear from the outset. This book’s mystery has a twist at the beginning, but the rest that follows wasn’t that surprising to me. However, it’s the execution that makes it shine, with the aforementioned humor at the right spots, in addition to endearing characters I’ve grown attached to.

Hugh has been given his own gang to solve the latest Quest Investigation. Of course, this also just happens to help him in trying to locate Wyn.
I have to admire the writers of paranormal stories and their imaginations. Here we travel under Loch Ness and see Nessie as well as some other creatures who I hadn't encountered before.
Sad that the next book is going to be the last with these characters.

Again, there are soo many repetitions. I get that these are a spin-off from a main series and can be read alone, but do we really need all. the. info. every. single. time? There are even repeats of jokes. I just roll my eyes at this point. Which is too bad. Has more potential.
Matt is definitely one of my least favorite characters from the overall series (although I still haven't picked up the original series due to the narrator) but there are also some interesting parts/plot devices brought up because he is human. Still think he's okay but like I said above...
The lore. I love hearing about all the lore in this world, even if a lot of it is rather sadespecially here. It's also great getting it from Matt's POV. Lore's brought up in the others too, of course, but he's so engaged and excited about it that it brings that extra spark. Learning the lore from the others is generally because of something left out of the supe's life and, while still very interesting... It's a different take and I enjoy both. The more I learn about this world, the better.
Overall, really enjoyed this. Wasn't surprising but liked the way things went about. Lots of cute bits and is a great reason to keep coming back. Yay Blair! And for Lachlan .

This is such a creative, fun series to read, and I love how the community of Quest investigations manages to be both hilarious and heartwarming at the same time. A werewolf that hates water but takes his hellhound managing duties seriously? A dryad with a subversive “book club” and snark for days? A hellhound puppy more likely to pee on someone’s leg than drag them to hell? You have to love them all, and at their center Hugh Mann (aka Matt), the one human who knows, loves, and solves problems for the supernatural world, while trying to finally, finally be able to date the selkie he’s been falling for for a while. There’s something about watching the lone human try to process various supernatural oddities and perils (while realizing that none of his absolutely on point pop culture references will resonate with his nonhuman friends) that’s just incredibly charming, and I also love that his time with the supernatural community is also showing him what’s awesome about his own humanity– he might not have magic, fae bone structure, or immortality, but he has his own resources–adaptability, innovation, compassion– that can be in short supply within a world peopled by individuals and groups bound by some very rigid, very punitive, very weighty supernaturally binding laws. (Thanks so much to this book, too, for ensuring that I’ll look askance at every grilled cheese sandwich I see from this point forward.) A compelling mystery, with compelling characters, and plenty of reasons to enjoy the read.

I got a free ARC of this book, however I had already preordered it when I read Five Dead Herrings, so odds were good this was going to be a positive review ARC or no ARC. Getting the ARC was just pure happiness.
I would defintely say this book cannot be read out of order, if you find the premise of this book interesting go to the first book and start reading. Character's are sort of explained, but you get much more depth and enjoyment knowing them all from the start. For side characters, Jordan and Doop are amazing and I love the growth Jordan has gone on throughout the entire series. Honestly I can't wait for him to get his own book and he's much more ready for it now than he was when we first met him in Howling on Hold. (that's a different series and not needed to understand this one)
I didn't quite get Niall's actions throughout the book, it just seemed ... odd. But maybe they'll get expanded on in the next book. Eleri is her usual sassy self and I really enjoyed the rest of the cast.
Now to the main characters Matt remains a favourite I honestly love him in this book. Per the author's intent the Romance is a subplot and this book more than any other it has really felt on the back burner. Which is a good thing because there's so much else going on that there isn't the time to dedicate to a romance. However a touch more communication between himself and Lachlann would have been appreciated as they edged a little close to the stupid miscommunication trope.
The mystery itself wasn't necessarily complicated, the answer being in the first couple of chapters, but the journey to find the person required kept me interested and rapidly turning pages.
It is with great trepidation and excitement that I wait the last in this series.

I love it when I start an awesome book and sink into it to the point where I'm surprised it's over. EJ does it again. I love how we get tidbits from past book events that somehow become relevant books later. It gives the feel that EJ planned this all along and not that they're making it up a book at a time. I love that feeling!

I really enjoyed this story. I liked Matthew's leaps of intuition which got the job done. I loved the scene with Nessie so much.

While Niall's overreaction that spurs Matt's ownership of the case feels like something of a contrivance, in general the story here was solid for me and I really enjoyed going on this journey with them, both emotionally and physically. (Physically for them, not for me. I didn't even physically get out of bed.)

Another brilliant addition to the Quest Investigation series! I'd recommend reading the series in order because if the character and relationship developments that build up across the books..
From the start, it's a full on story with twists and unexpected turns. Matt is thrown in at the deep end with a case that starts with zero clues but with the help of Eleri, Jordan and Doop, they soon get on with things, even enlisting Herne (book 2).
Things start tying together for a couple of the side characters that we've known since book one but it's all built into the investigation that's going on.
Matt and Lachlan's relationship has the chance to move forward finally, once they find his husband..... Hopefully. They have something sweet together just with hand holding and lingering looks. Imagine how they'll be once Lachlan can get his divorce.
I loved the drama that comes up in this story. It adds to the tension and the case that they work in is very interesting. It brings up bad history for a couple of characters but also helps some others move forward with their lives.
A highly recommended read that is entertaining and dramatic, drawing you in from the start and can't be put down until you've found out the who, what, why and how.

This series is just so much fun and I find myself devouring each book and instantly wanting the next one. There is so much going on, but it is done so well it is never overwhelming and always interesting. We finally have some romantic development, even if it's small all the pining and lingering looks/touches made it feel pretty dang big. I felt like this added more from the connected series than previous books did, so might be better to read those first, though I don't think it's necessary (although you definitely have to read this specific series in order). I just love the characters, the plots, absolutely everything about this series. So excited for the next, but so sad it's coming to an end!

Wow...this series is keeping me intrigued, I just never thought that a side character will create such a strong presence. Yes, it's not a romance, but the bits and pieces thrown in between Matt Steinitz/ Hugh Mann and his selkie hottie of a sorta bf Lachlan Broady are just too sweet, especially the way Lachlan dotes on his "Mathew" (oh the scotish burr makes me weak in the knees 😍). Best of all is the hit author-narrator combo of E. J. Russell - Greg Bourdeaux ♥️♥️♥️♥️. I think I see myself auto buying their combo work in the future as well. The storytelling is meshing so well with the narration that you are hooked from the start, especially the way Ms Russell keeps introducing these surprising new characters. Do read the previous books as this isn't a standalone story.
After finishing up the previous investigation with flying colors and proving himself to be a human investigator to be reckoned with in the paranormal world, Matt/Hugh is looking forward to finally concluding his business of "finding Win", Lachlan's ex husband and then "getting it on" with his hottie bf once and for all. But things never turn out that simple in Quest Investigations. When Matt and his team of misfits, Ellery - the rebel dryad and office assistant "in training" Jordan - the over energetic adorable werewolf with his hellhound mutt "dupe" are again thrown into Matt's first solo case. Things couldn't have been better for our lead investigator, except the investigation is for a client whose making both his bosses Niall and Mal loose their cool and butt heads. Why, because the client is Niall's elder brothers Mother who abandoned Aimon when he was a child. From here on Matt is not just trying to bring the tension down in his workplace between his bosses, but also trying to balance two investigations at the same time, not an easy task when the people you are seeking do not want to be found🙄. Will our poor investigator get his "HEN", remains to be seen.
Narration is always such a joy to listen to when GB is narrating and here again the master of voice variation has done it, especially with Welsh, Scottish and Irish accents (not an easy feat) and kept the pace of the story so well, that you are hooked from the start. I did miss the romance, but the hilarious bits are plenty and keeps you entertained till the end. So, looking forward to the book 4😍🥰🤗.

great plot, outstanding characters, love this!
There’s just so much to love about this third installment in Russell’s Quest Investigations series! It’s even more convoluted then ever with all the supernatural laws and politics involved, that’s not even looking at all the individuals who have major parts to play at the drama here.
This is mega supernatural melodrama… with all that entails. Some comedy, usually supplied by the antics of Jordan and his Hellhound Doop. But here there’s also some real tragedy and trauma to digest. The characters who have come to Matt as well as those around him, are dealing with incredibly painful memories and emotionally damaging issues.

The writing is crisp, the action swift paced, characterizations outstanding, and a tale packed full of the full range of emotions.
The humor is there. But so many scenes that will move you. One of a dust filled room, tiny cradle will surely have you in tears.
As always, I’m left wanting more. I’d probably be thrilled if these stories were 300k longer as I’d linger in each room, wanting more dialogue and exposition.
Ah well, guess I’ll have to be satisfied with the next novel coming in March!
I’m happily recommending this story but read the entire series in the order it’s written for relationship development and overall series arc plot line. It’s amazing.
Plus it’s all part of the author’s Mythmatched universe. So it helps to have read those stories beforehand for some background knowledge if possible.
If not, there’s an entire universe to explore as well.
There’s just so much to love about this third installment in Russell’s Quest Investigations series! It’s even more convoluted then ever with all the supernatural laws and politics involved, that’s not even looking at all the individuals who have major parts to play at the drama here.
This is mega supernatural melodrama… with all that entails. Some comedy, usually supplied by the antics of Jordan and his Hellhound Doop. But here there’s also some real tragedy and trauma to digest. The characters who have come to Matt as well as those around him, are dealing with incredibly painful memories and emotionally damaging issues.

Intertwined pasts
Another wild case for Matt as he takes on something that once again the bosses can't/won't work on and learns new things about this supernatural world he is in!
Matt's quest to find Lachlan's errant husband leads instead to a water based fae who is looking for her son and just so happens to be mother to the King of Faerie. This leads to quite the tension at the offices and makes it that Matt needs to take the case to make sure things are neutral and the case given due attention. It shows how much Matt has gone from the first book as he truly takes this case with confidence and a knack for looking at things from a different perspective that helps find solutions others don't see.
It is fascinating how these stories really take the old myths and shine a modern light on them. If there truly were creatures that had to follow these strict rules it would be horrible and hopefully some would try to protect them, but likely others would take advantage. Matt has the open minded position of learning about the supernatural 'rules' from the people who has them imposed upon them, and he tends to look upon them critically and consider exactly what it means for that person. This way of investigating has made him more receptive than his bosses at times and it has also afforded him many allies along the way. In fact, Matt finally realizes that he has a team that he lead while he works and they too are getting better at this whole thing. As Matt leads his team and leans on his allies he follows down a road that surprisingly may finally lead him to Lachlan, but the case has to come first.
A well done journey with just the right mix of supernatural twists, modern ingenuity, and supportive investigation. This case manages to tie up a few lingering loose ends from previous stories, which is very well done, while hinting towards some further discoveries yet to be made before the series is done. Looking forward to seeing how it all wraps up!

Such a fun book!. Ms. Russell is a fine writer, bringing style, humor, and actual pathos into this very complicated chapter in her four-part Quest Investigations series.
Matt Steinitz (professional name: Hugh Mann) is the only human employee of Quest investigations, a private detective business in Portland, Oregon, dedicated to handling the needs of the supernatural world. In this third installment, Matt gets his chance to operate on his own; This is largely because the client who walks through the door apparently pissed off some very powerful people centuries before, and Matt’s two bosses don’t want to deal with her.
What I loved about this book—and this series in general—is the way the author makes all the characters lift off the page as people (even if they’re not remotely human). They have needs, fears, personality flaws…they feel fear, pain, shyness, and love. In fact Russell drags a whole range of emotions into this story, which is nominally a quest for two missing children. It also focuses on the appallingly sexist and unfair laws of the magic world—the traditional world of the supernatural, known as Faerie. Here the author is drawing in contemporary sensibilities and applying them to a supernatural culture that—like it or not—needs to adapt to the modern human world to which it is irrevocably bound.
Matt—known as Matthew (pronounced Matt-Hugh) by his would-be selkie boyfriend, Lachlan Brodie, emerges as a strong, big-hearted, brave investigator—worthy of the trust and friendship of the supernaturals he serves. He’s been something of a bumbler up to this point, but left in the lurch by his bosses (who have their reasons, albeit not good ones), he rises to the occasion.
I am ready to start on book four.

I love this series, and its mix of fabulous characters, action, humour, and fabulous worldbuilding. This story is a fun addition to this world, and I love Matt’s narration as Quest’s only human. I enjoy the way the author takes the usual supernatural tropes and gives them a twist.
Poor Matt. His and Lachlan’s not-yet relationship hits several snags in this story, and I felt for him as he worries they’ll never get a chance to be together. I love how protective Lachlan is of Matt, and the further bits of information about selkies in this story. Their scenes together are sweet, and it’s obvious they’re together to everyone else, although they can’t be really together yet. I like how Lachlan is doing the right thing by Wyn. And how Matt finally gets his own team.
Wyn’s a sweet guy, who has been totally taken advantage of. I liked the twist of what he is and how that ties into Quest’s current case. It was great seeing more of Jordan and Doop. Jordan’s one of my favourite characters, and I love how seriously he takes his responsibilities, especially where Doop is concerned. I love how protective Doop is of Jordan, and what he does to those he dislikes. Hell hound puppies for the win. I love Eleri too, and her dryad ‘book club.’ Herne is a sweetie underneath his wild hunt and hunting down wrong doers side.
I loved Mal and Niall and their arguments. The only really mature people in Quest are Matt and Zeke.
I did guess early on who the missing child really was, but that didn’t detract from the story.
The pop culture references are another bonus, and extra fun as none of the supernaturals get them.
I’ll be sad when this series finishes, and I hope the author keeps writing in this world.

“The Lady Under the Lake” by E.J. Russell is part of the ‘Quest Investigations’ series and continues the adventures of Matt Steinitz, better known to the paranormal beings as Hugh Mann, as he tries to free his love interest, the selkie Lachlan Brodie, from his handfasting to Wyn, a water fae. Unfortunately, he gets sidetracked by a new client, also a water fae, who not only disrupts the smooth running of Quest, but may cause a rift that will affect even the rulers of the fragile Seelie/Unseelie Convergence.
This delightful gay paranormal story is an excellent addition to a fun and exciting series. I’m afraid that the show is always stolen any time Jordan, the young werewolf with a Frisbee obsession, is present, but adding the hellhound puppy Doop just seals the deal.
I love watching Hugh/Matt navigate the tricky and perilous path of being one of the few humans who is actually aware of the myriad of paranormal beings and who is truly interested in all of the permutations of the fae. He started out as a little too pushy, I thought, but his arc has shown that he truly cares…both for Lachlan, but also for those he’s come into contact with while working with Quest Investigations.
These stories are such a breath of fresh air, and I always am anxious to find out what is going to develop in these beings’ lives. I’ve always been enamored with various mythologies, and I find these new perspectives to be both fun and thought-provoking. I adore Jordan and Doop, and I can’t wait to find out how they destroy, I mean, help with more cases.

Flippin’ fantastic
I think this book and series is super dooper and not just because of one hyper hellhound—though I wish I could have Doop around anytime people are rude. No, it’s because my love for this world runs deeper than all the lakes, rivers and oceans combined. The adventures, the cases, the mysteries, they fascinate as much as they enchant. But my favorite part?
Yep, you guessed it, that would be the absolutely delightful, clever Matt aka Hugh Mann and his incredible team. They hooked me from the start and my feelings for them have only grown. Plus, I’m rooting for Matt and Lachlan to sail away together. I so adore that grumpy but big-hearted selkie and I can’t get enough of those two together. They make my heart wave with happiness. It’s no lie, this quirky family reeled me in with their charm, their snark, their wit and yes, their puns. They definitely made a splash with this investigation, and I gotta say that my heart is truly sunk with them, but I’m so ready for another dip with Quest Investigations.

I'm really enjoying this series with its cast of quirky paranormal characters. In this latest installment, Matt takes on the case of a woman seeking her missing child. The complication, though, is that she is the mother of Eammon, the king of Faerie, so Niall, Matt's boss is a bit miffed at her appearance. But Matt soldiers ahead in order to solve the mystery with the help of his crew (and he does have one now in the "persons" of Eleri, Lachlan, and Jordan, accompanied by hellhound Doop.
It's an odd read in some respects as there are even more characters to keep track of as characters have been introduced through the series, but it seemed a bit easier to follow the plotline in this story. I'm probably just happily immersed in the author's world of paranormals with a healthy amount of humor balanced by a fair amount of subtle satire, as various characters serve as cautionary tales since it seems a lot of problems in this crazy world mirror our own.
I'm growing to like the character of Matt more and more, along with his sidekicks Eleri and Jordan. This is a fun light read for those times you just want to escape into another world.

One of the best series on Audio
The world-building is beyond good, and the character development is so detailed. Each book is unique, and the stories keep you tuned in from start to finish, although you need to read/listen to them in order as they aren't really stand-alone books.
This book doesn't have a HEA as it's not a romance. However, it's funny, heartfelt, slightly odd and has a lot of magical mischief and death. So we get a bit of everything, and it's addictive.
Well worth the read/listen. It's the type of series you can go back to many times, as I'm sure you miss bits as it's so full.
Greg Boudreaux does a fantastic job narrating, as usual. However, like I usually do, I sped up to 1.15 in audible.
