A little birdie told me this book was dropping on January 11th and, and when I realized I hadn't received an ARC by January 10th, I reached out to Mia Knight (she and I have chatted on goodreads and facebook over the years) and basically said:

description

Cause I'm mature like that.

Anyway, Ms. Knight was kind enough to throw me a bone and this book and I'm SO excited I got to read it before starting a long work week. I work extremely long hours these days and have no time for non re-reads during my work week at present.

But I digress.

I cracked this baby open and finished it in one delicious sitting.

We got more Jasmine and Roth, Roth, Roth, of course. And we even got a glimpse into their beginnings, which I actually really enjoyed despite not being a huge lover of flashbacks.

I will say that the latter quarter of the book lagged a bit and I was also surprised that we didn't cover much ground here (this book starts where book one takes off and only spans several months into their marriage deal). To be blunt, not much happens in this book, period.

Regardless, I just love Mia's brand of romance. The chemistry, possessiveness, and enigmatic alpha male elements of her books always hit the mark with me and this was no different. Yes, not much happened here, but I really don't care. I just love reading about this couple and their everyday.

I'm really looking forward to book three, although I know we will have to put our patience hats on. Mia said she won't be getting to book three until she finishes the next book in the Crime Lord series (woot woot!).

Anyway, I can see reviews for this being all over the place, especially after the long wait between books one and two; however, I personally enjoyed it and already have a re-read planned. I fully admit that I am probably biased and that is coloring my reading experience and rating, but I just love Mia's writing style and, as I said earlier, the chemistry and possessiveness her couples always display.

book title: Bitter Secrets
page count: 480
secrets revealed: zero

what i liked:

🦋 Jasmine and Roth’s romance

all the couple scenes between the main characters were the best part of the book for me. Jas and Roth have such a toxic dynamic with their constant push and pull and it’s exhausting, but explosive at the same time. they have that spark on page that you can feel. the hate sex is off the chart 🔥

“What is wrong with you?”
He gripped her chin and tugged so she fell sideways into him. “You’re what’s fucking wrong with me.”

🦋 these tiny moments of unhingedness coming from Roth

my favorite James Roth side is when he shows his psychopathy like almost strangling grannies 😌 i love his possessiveness when he gets crazy when Jas’ touches other men even just the way he shuts her up every time she mentions she had sex with other men. those moments give me life. i want to see Roth being an unapologetic asshole.

“I see right through people. I don’t like pretense. With you, it’s right there. I’ll take your hate. I’ll take your lust. I’ll take anything that’s real.”

what i disliked:

🦋 the repetitiveness

let’s the honest this book has no plot and that’s usually fine with me. Bitter Secret spans only ONE MONTH in Roth and Jas’ marriage and if you think that feels slow for almost 500 pages … believe me it is slow. all they do is fly around Europe, Jasmine going sightseeing with her bodyguards, meeting some business associates, Jas & Roth having a full on discussion that turns into hate sex, they fly somewhere new, Jasmine giving Roth the cold shoulder, Roth forcing her to do something, they are fighting and end up having sex… rinse and repeat.

the thought that this book only spans one months where the next book would show the next 11 months in their marriage is totally wack to me. the timeline of these books is messed up.

🦋 everything that wasn’t the romance

i know it’s part of the plot and Roth’s revenge on Daddy Hennessy to show how he easily sneaked into their elite business circle. but the amount of people that either Roth or Jasmine had dinner with to talk about business .. i don’t care. i don’t care that it’s laying the groundwork for everything that might come for future books i was just bored out of my mind. Mia Knight could cut this book into half the size and i’m convinced the book would have stayed the same.

conclusion:

Bitter Heat came out 2019, Bitter Secret came out 2023 .. by my calculation see you back in 2027 for Bitter Confessions 🤞

as I said, the first one was borderline sketchy with consent, but this one was tiptoeing between rape and dubcon. I thought I'd feel that way for book one, but nope, this one was it. this book didn’t give much to the plot (the whole secrets thing), but it did explore more of their relationship!

⌞ It picked up right from book 1. They spent the majority of the book fighting, traveling, and fucking. That’s it. ⌝

personally, i didn’t like the placement of the past scenes because they were in between the ANGSTY chapters, and I wanted to read the present scenes at that time lol. but the past scenes were good and gave insight into their relationship!

I’m literally so fucking sad for Jasmine. Even though she acted indecisive and maybe is kind of too trusting and naive, I don’t hate her. She’s left with no choice, and it’s not like she gave in to Roth—he just forced her until she had to. It was so freaking angsty, and I love how she never once had sex with him without a brutal fight. Though his whole "your body reacts to me" and her "my body sings for him" made me angry ☺️

James Roth is truly a bitch, i swear. again, mentioning it— it's a crime not getting his pov. He’s so manipulative and cruel with his words. Sometimes, he’s so fucking nice that you’ll love him so much, and then he’ll pull the rug out, and you realize he truly is an asshole. i hated him. i hated him so much sometimes, but then I loved him. His actions showed he cares for her, but his words... as he said, "he’s not good with words." I agree.

- Around 50% in, when he told her she was a lonely, neglected girl and that he took advantage of her in the beginning, fucked her, and left, what Jasmine felt was so freaking depressing 😭 I actually felt SOOO bad for her, I couldn’t help it. Her being indecisive is one thing, but the way her sadness was written. 🥲

James Roth, you didn’t treat her right. 🤬 The next book BETTER have soft scenes, as the author mentioned, and some good confessions and proper reasons! I really would 🔪🔪

⌞ about the book ⌝

it was too long, and some events were kind of unnecessary. Things that were mentioned in book 1 were explained in too much detail here. the chapters are too long, and this should’ve been around 300 pages. I missed Lyle & Colette’s scenes, but tb after what Roth said about her sisters, it confirmed my suspicions that they might actually be using her. 🥲 i like Johan & Mo (the bodyguards) and Sarai (the assistant). and Johnny Salazar and Aleixo, I love you both. <3

theory - i think the secret of Roth is, that he killed his own father when he was a kid. that's why her mother hates him and because his father was not a nice person, he believes that he will not be a good father either, that's why he got vasectomy.

Like everyone else, I've been waiting for this highly anticipated sequel for a looong time. Bitter Heat is one of my all time favorite books, and I've reread it so many times I practically have Roth and Jasmine's first book memorized. You have no idea how thrilled I was to be receiving an ARC of Bitter Secrets and I'm beyond grateful that I did!

Bitter Secrets was unexpected... in both good and bad ways. I loved being back with Jasmine and the unhinged insanity that is Roth, but I didn't realize this sequel would only cover the first month of their marriage of convenience. During their first four weeks as a married couple (again), Roth takes Jasmine with him all across Europe as he wraps up some business plans. Jasmine is still left in the dark about what he's up to (does anyone ever truly know what Roth is doing??) buuut I'm really hoping that the reason Roth is finalizing everything business related is so he can finally be the husband Jasmine deserves.

It's a big book that takes place over the course of four weeks, so the pacing is incredibly slow, and add in the flashbacks to when Jasmine and Roth first met and fell in love, we don't get too much plot development in present day. That being said, I LOVED getting to know these characters before their first marriage and before their love turned so messy. We finally get a little glimpse into Roth's character and how he used to be back then.

Even though I didn't love this sequel quite as much as the first book, I'm still so excited for more of Jasmine and Roth. We're getting two more books, and honestly, the more the merrier. I'll never have enough of Roth and his obsession/deranged devotion to Jasmine. This is the kind of anti-hero who will literally do ANYTHING to have the woman that he wants, and he's never stopped wanting her. I can't wait to see what he does next!

*****

HELL. YES. I’m diving into my arc!!! And YES the book is coming soon!

If I actually wrote how I felt about this book it would exceed the Goodreads word count limit 💀. It takes a severely mentally ill special person to understand Roth and Jasmine and how fucking good they are. I think a lot of people are going to be upset that this went from a trilogy to a quartet but this book was necessary simply for the sake of developing their relationship. There was no way he was going to change within two chapters which is what we typically see in romance books. No, you’re not going to find out every single secret in this book because it would kind of defeat the purpose of the next two books. But you do get glimpses into his background and somewhat have an idea what it was like for him growing up.

Roth and Jasmine are the epitome of one step forward, fifteen steps back. Every time you think they’re headed in the right direction, Roth acts like Roth. This book isn’t dark in my opinion but it was emotionally draining to read. It definitely packs a punch and I felt like he was my psychotic husband at the end of it all.

ETA: I’m seeing reviews that says this book covered a month but it wasn’t even two weeks into their marriage? The man choked an old woman at the end of book one and you just expected him to change within two chapters……kind of crazy.

This time, her eyes were wide open. There were no illusions left to shatter.

Oh Boy. All aboard for another wild ride with Mr. Roth.
Bitter Secrets picks up exactly where Bitter Heat left off, after the shocking scene with Thea. Told entirely in Jasmines' POV, we start this book off with some MAJOR questions for our dear new husband.

description
She felt like a kite in a hurricane, but she held fast. She bore his marks and wore his ring, but she wouldn't give him what he wanted. This wasn't a marriage where he demanded, and she gave. If he wanted, he had to take. She just wished she didn't like it so fucking much.

Will we get the answers for our questions right away? Absolutely not.
In true Mia Knight fashion, we are going to voyeur some seriously spicy scenes with our new husband - a total hardship I know. (insert smirk)
We will have to reconstruct everything around us and try to piece together this larger-than-we-could-have-imagined chess board, our dear husband has been moving pieces on since the day he met us. Jasmine and her family have been playing checkers this whole time - Roth has been playing chess. Checkmate Hennessy Family.
Let's just say, its going to be a rollercoaster of emotions trying to figure out what our dear husband has in store for us.

The first 30% and last 10% of the book were the only parts that gripped me and the rest was incredibly underwhelming. I couldn’t gaf abt the new characters that were introduced except for Grayson (that man can get it 😮‍💨) and I wasn’t as invested as I was expecting to be.

A whole lot of nothing happened in this book tbh, which I just finished an hour ago and thinking back on it, not much stood out to me. And the chapters were so long wtf 😭

The same scenes repeated again and again just in a different setting. Not only the scenes but the constant inner monologue of ‘he burned me for the 26727th time but I know better now, I’m not gna let him get to me again’ then keeps expectations from him only to have him break her heart again 😃🔫 argh it got on my nervesssss- even tho I get why it’s a recurring cycle (like an addict trying to stop but then relapsing).

Jasmine had no loyalty to herself whatsoever. I’m not even saying this because of her inability to keep her body from betraying her but because she spills all her fucking thoughts and secrets to him like what are you doing?! he’s not ur ally 🙏 ur NOT supposed to tell him u have the potential to hold something over him. Ykw I’m starting to realise that her dad was right to not let her work for him 💀

My frustration with Jasmine is too much to let me root for her, she’s not nearly smart enough to handle Roth and it’s disappointing. I wanna see her up her game in the next book or it’s just gna be boring asf seeing him run circles around her and Jasmine getting backed into a corner every time.

Jamie’s back must be broken carrying this book. He’s the only one who was driving the story forward and making things interesting. Him having dirt on even the kids had me howlinggg help he’s so funny to me 😭🤚

There were moments where I could see development in Jamie’s character but then he’d go and do something that threw all that progress on its ass, going back to square one.

I liked that he’d started giving her an inch, confiding in her a little more and that we’re being given flickers of insight into his brain but it’s never gna be enough and he’s not gna change in a month so I get it. Ngl I see a lot of potential for the third book to have some satisfactory grovelling bc of how this one ended…

Also the flashbacks didn’t work as well for me as it didn’t in the last book. Don’t get me wrong, they were rlly interesting but had sm waffle I was skimming tf outta them. But younger JamieJasmine were so fucking wholesome my heart hurtssss 😩❤️‍🩹 she was so lively and she made him feel loved and he was there trying to keep her from his ugly side ugh pain pain pain

All in all, I’m slightly disappointed with how it turned out but I’m not mad bc after all the back and forth, there was some sort of development in their relationship which is probably gna be their shaky as fuck foundation for the next two books.

Can’t wait to get my heart ripped clean outta my chest when I find out about the other secrets he’s been hiding 😍😍

Petition to bring back Lyle and family 😤 remember how I said in the last review that they were the only thing giving this book life? Yeah, I was right bc this book was dead asf w/o them.

Day 624 waiting for this book…..

Miss Thang PLEASE IM BEGGING YOU!!!! Any update will do!!!! Give us something!!!

————-

Day 480 waiting for this book in freaking AGONY...

In the meantime i'm posting my two theories. SPOILER WARNING IF YOU HAVENT READ THE FIRST ONE.

1.) I think Roth is either a sociopath or has some kind of high functioning Aspergers/Bi-polar. I think Roth being a Sociopath would explain his behavior/temper AND his fixation on Jasmine?? And i think it would also explain why he would get a vasectomy so he can't pass down any neurological problem down to his children???

2.) I think Roth killed his father and Jasmines father held that as blackmail over him. I think this explains why Roth's mother is scared of him and calls him a monster/dangerous.

I went in with low expectations—and got completely hooked.

Roth is practically a case study in psychological complexity: intriguing, intense, dark, manipulative, obsessive, territorial, not to mention a

Then there’s Jasmine—the reluctant martyr. Her body aches for Roth while her mind pushes back, resisting the pull. Their dynamic creates a compelling tension, blurring the lines of consent and control in ways that are both uncomfortable and addictive to read. And boy, don’t I love that??

The twisted chemistry between them kept me flipping pages.

It’s not for everyone, but if you enjoy morally grey characters and psychological entanglements, look no further.

Bring on the next!

I pray that this is not a trilogy. I can’t wait another 3 years for this shit. Worse kind of suspense and if this new book ends with a cliffhanger, I’m going to be super f*cking pissed off. This wait is so horrible and cruel I don’t even want to read her other books in fear that she’ll betray me with another kick in the tits cliffhanger and make me wait 3 more years for it to come out.

***edit****

I’m officially dropping this series. Taking this book out of my wish list and I hope I forget this entire series. For a professional author, Mia Knight is the worst. Not even an update or news on why the long wait. If it was a mental health or medical break she’s taking, then I’m an asshole, and I hope she’s okay nonetheless. But I am not waiting around to find out. Peace out y’all.

This is a long awaited sequel
It gives some history, some flash back chapters but it feels very very slow.
At times when this happens it makes me wonder if there is need to draw things out so much.
We are none the wiser really to Roth, the Hero.
He does explain a bit about his past and we can guess that his motives are more than just business but he doesn't give a complete explanation or one at all.
Its a bit frustrating and it can feel like wash, rinse, repeat when you constantly don't get to the bottom of anything.
I didn't like the old Mills and Boon, the heroine can't resist when the Hero touches her.
I would have liked her to be a bit stronger. That said he does have control over so much of her life.
But as an example, she finds out he is listening to every phone call and she has bodyguards who report her every move, so ask a trusted friend to get you a burner phone.
Also I am a bit fed up of the troupe where the heroine gives up everything for their family, to save the business.
I did like she has 2 strong protective brother in-laws.

There did seem like there would be interesting spin off characters to have their stories.

It looks like it's going to 4 books possibly, with the author working on a separate series in between, so don't hold your breath for the HEA for x amount of years.
If you are the type of reader that waits to read a complete story, maybe mark it on your tbr.

'The Singed Series (currently) is a quartet. I’m praying I can contain 11 months into book 3 because I have major plans for book 4. All four books will be from Jasmine’s POV. I’m planning to do an extra book from Roth’s perspective, a book 5 that won’t be necessary for closure from the series.' From the author.

I think it will be worth it when it's finished but as a reader I'm not a fan of being along for the author's journey, I'd rather meet them at the finish line.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

I just found out the author said we still won't get Roths pov in this one and I was really looking forward to it (especially a flashback when he finds out Jasmine filed for divorce..can you imagine that?? His possessive ass going bat-shit-crazy!! Alsooo the truth behind the vasectomy?)
But maybe next oneee
Excuse me while I go reread book1 for the hundredth time

I loved Bitter Heat and seriously how can I wait nearly a year, I'll probably go crazy..
I only hope there won't be cheating or anything big with ow/om.

After reading another book by this author where the cheating was portrayed as not such a big deal..and it wasn't even the main reason the h left😑
Anyway that book had so much potential, such a great book if you can ignore that he cheated, sadly I can't..

roth and jasmine have such a toxic relationship and I love it 🫣. there was a lot of back and forth between them which made this book addicting to read. I personally love to read romances where there is a lot of push and pull between the main characters, so this story was entertaining for me!

I love jasmine so much! I have a love-hate relationship with roth because he’s manipulative but I love how obsessed he is with jasmine and how he only cares about her. he makes me feel confused but I love him and jasmine together 😭🫶🏻. anyways, now that I finished this book I feel empty and I need book 3 <3.

one of my favorite quotes ↓

“They were two broken pieces that somehow felt a little more whole when they were together. They weren’t perfect, nowhere close, but maybe that was as close to perfect as fucked up people like them could be.”

Update: sadly I skimmed this book and it didn’t have the spark the first one had. The delay and extending the storyline into multiple books, ruined the story.

Past comment : Delayed A-GAIN. This is why I don't read books with cliffy endings. I had to go and read it in anticipation for the release and then this happens. Jesus Christ!

First of all,yes i’ve read Bitter Heat. And yes,i forgot to add it….although i can’t think why i didn’t,because it was SO GOOD!
And hell yes,i was waiting for Bitter Secrets, but i knew Mia was working through some “issues”.
So,i waited patiently for her to sort things out.
And the result is SO WORTH THE WAIT!!!

She tears your heart out with everything Jasmine is going through because of Roth.
She has him stomp on it to make sure it breaks into a million pieces.
And still she isn’t done….

Because, even though we see more of both, and there may be moments where you start to hope,Roth is still Roth.
He takes what he wants, crushes Jasmine on an almost daily basis, and is still the ruthless man he was before.
Yes,we see a little glimpse of his human side, and yes,he cán act kindly.
But everything is done with an agenda,so does that include the kindness he sometimes shows Jasmine?
Or is there more to him than we can see….

Jasmine has to survive the year she’s agreed to be married to Roth.
Question is,how….because he still has the power to destroy her.
She may have thought she’d grown stronger in these past 5 years, but he’s proving her wrong, time and time again.
Everything he does is for a reason,is calculated, and he’s still 2 steps ahead of anything she thinks he might be capable of.
He manipulates her over and over into doing what he wants, and she hates him for it.
So,why does her body still crave his brand of fucking?
You can’t call it making love, because that’s not what he does….
He drags her from country to country for his business deals, and it’s exhausting her.
The only times she manages to have a little fun,is with her bodyguards and the friends she still seems to have….
He keeps pushing and pushing until she’s had enough.
Leaving me with the cliffhanger from hell…..

All i can say is,that i hope Jasmine will survive her year with him.
And i really hope Roth is going to get his act together before he loses her forever!
And most of all,i hope to see book 3 before i lose my mind!!!

Hmmmmmmmmmmmm.... I honestly don't know what I think about this one🤔

Now, you know I LOVED and DEVOURED the first book, the suspense, the darkness, the thriller was perfect in that one (plus it was hot AF😜🤤) but all of those lacked in this one? I was just confused 100%

The storyline was all over the place, THEY were all over the place, they could not sit down FOR A MINUTE... Jasmine would wake up and Roth would be like "You have 12 minutes to get ready, we're flying to Amsterdam."

And that happened EVERY GODDAMN CHAPTER 😶‍🌫

Was this a travel guide book mixed with some sex and confusing back and forth drama? I don't know🤠

Maybe I'm dumb as hell and could not get the whole "suspense" thing, but I'm nowhere near dumb as our girl Jasmine, who KNOWS Roth is manipulating and using plus ABUSING her, and she's still breaking at every shit he does. And she does these while being "mad" at him every chapter UGHHH FFS👹

STAND💀 UP💀

But still, I love the way Mia writes her MMC's, you know you'll be getting the most UNHINGED sociopath you've ever seen...

“I’m not good enough for you. You can do better, but I’m not going to give you the chance to.”

“Fuhk yu,” she slurred.
“You will,” he promised as his tongue lapped at her pulse. “Every fucking day. No one measured up to you, just like no one can take my place.”

Yes.

I’m convinced that this whole ass book could have been avoided if someone had sewed Jasmine’s damned legs shut! Boyyyyyyyyyyyyy it got old how Jasmine’s and Roth’s every encounter turned into dirty, raw, rough fucking. Hello!?!?
