AS THE LIGHT DIES

Rate this book
Coming from a poor family in the heart of Appalachia, college was little more than a dream to Dave Sellier. Then, in his senior year, the Army recruiter came to his school and told him how the Army would pay for it all—if he'd just enlist for a few years...

As an Army Ranger, he fell in love with the brotherhood and thought he'd found his place in the world.

An IED changed all that in the blink of an eye, and he found himself back on his family land outside a little town called Tazewell, in the mountains of Tennessee.

Living a fairly solitary existence, Dave prepared himself to survive the hard times he was sure were coming from either a civil war in America, or an EMP strike from one of their enemies.

He was wrong on both accounts.

The author of this story, David Saylor, has been a voracious reader and a huge fan of the Post-Apoc and Disaster-Fiction genres for a long time. Recently, he was diagnosed with a rare terminal disease, and found himself bedridden in the hospital—a lot. Rather than lay there thinking about dying, he decided to write a story of his own to get his mind off of all that. He never intended for it to be published, and he wasn't sure he'd live long enough to finish it.

He wrote it using himself and his wife Julie as the main characters in a completely fictional, over-the-top, sometimes exaggerated, fun-to-him way, combining the genres he loved to read—because really, isn't that why we read fiction? To imagine ourselves in a different place and different circumstance than we're really in? David was never a Ranger in real life but because of the influence of his reading it was more fun to imagine himself as a kick-ass American Army Ranger than what his reality was.

To some of us, who are perhaps a "different breed of cat" than usual, writing a story is the only thing more fun than reading one. This is David's shot at it. It turned out really long, because he had a lot of time, and he'll keep writing for as long as he can. It's been broken up into several proper books, and his fondest wish now, is to see them published.

I think you ought to read them, and if you like them, tell him that from the contact info in the back-matter. While you still can.

I always want to like a book, otherwise I would not start it. I started out kind of liking Dave and of course, his dog Fred. His level of preps, including enough weapons and ammo for a small army, seemed a bit unbelievable, but I guess...hobbies. What I could not get past was the endless drumbeat of right-wing talking points. I get that a lot of authors, particularly in this genre, are on the conservative side and that is generally OK that they differ from my views, so long as the politics are not too intrusive to the story. Some differing points of view can be a good thing. In this case, nearly every character had to recite a bitter manifesto of right-wing grievance, some of it just ridiculous (like soldiers being forced out for saluting the flag or saying the Pledge of Allegiance). There seemed to be no point to this story other than to belch out this vitriol, so I gave up.

Good story

The characters were believable. However the political commentary got annoying. So I would skip that and read the story. That I enjoyed.

When stuff happens…

I gave this one a try. The editing was spot on and there were some colorful characters in what I read. However, I didn’t realize there would be so many religious references. This one just wasn’t my cup of tea.

I wish nothing but the best for them.

outstanding!

This book is such a feel good scenario! I like it it! I like hope.
Saylor and Craven Jr. did a great job together. This is a fairytale outcome where everything comes together, everything has been thought of and no amount money was spared to prepare. Even good fortune came into play and it is refreshing. If anything, this book helps with the things needed to be considered, as most do in this genre, but this one relays the scenario of CME, being known and the expected knowledge of the disaster before the actual event occurs, the turmoil leading up to the main event, which I consider an accurate, possible depiction. We know we can never be completely sure that we are prepared and we know the best laid plans have flaws. But it sure feels good to read a story of a successful outcome. We’ll see if that holds up later in the series.. I doubt it.

Even though there was a small actual story mixed in with all the far right propaganda (and I am a conservative), I somewhat, a little bit, kinda, liked the story. Though, I must admit I skimmed over many pages about guns and extreme theories.

I read this because I thought it was a Christian novel, but their faith in Jesus is maybe 3% of their lives.
Another problem I had was their behavior even before the fall, they murdered people, and though I understand the horrible dilemma with no help coming--but no dude, just no.

The most surprising part is the stupid, fall-in-love, quick two-week romance to marriage. It's written by a man who must believe this is how women feel, and about their intense desperate need to get married.

I wanted to like it a lot more, but I just couldn't, and I don't think I will read anymore books in this series.
It's a good thing an apocalyptic event actually happened, or forty years from now they would be scratching their heads wondering where they went wrong.

I was very disappointed

I liked the setting, the very descriptive way you portrayed it. I liked the makeup of the characters.
I did NOT like the political hit job, you did on those people who are liberals. There are good and bad people in both liberal and conservative groups, and blaming one group for all the problems in this country is unrealistic and will really turn off many potential readers. Sad.

Couldn’t finish it

I read lots of books in this genre. Too many authors taint their works with politics and religion. If you’re a Trumper and already living in an alternate reality you may like this book. But even if you are, you’re going to have to swallow a lone prepper who has enough weapons to arm a company of troops and buys ammo in multiple pallets. Too much for me; I folded 23% into the book.

political tirade

I love apocalypse books, and I don’t consider myself either a liberal or a conservative, but I couldn’t get through this book, as hard as I tried. It just seems like a political tirade against the current government. I get enough of that in the news, I did not consider this entertainment.

Maybel, Xi, Fred, Sadie, Comrade Viper,….

……. Bear, Ole Man Cole, & the whole Crew!
I *CANNOT WAIT* for Book 2!
I rarely, if ever, begin a series that isn’t complete - or on the very cusp of completion- because I simply have zero patience when it comes to stories I love.
I start them then I just cannot stop till that Fat Lady’s singin’ (& I’m STILL usually begging my favorite authors for more!)!
As The Light Dies, however, was recommended so highly by the amazing & sublimely talented Boyd Craven Jr. (speaking of favorite authors!!), & also by others who love this genre - I just had to give it a go.
(Additionally, check out the author, David Saylor’s backstory.
This played into my decision to read -ASAP- as well. It’s pretty vital intel, I’d say.)
The fact that As The Light Dies is David Saylor’s 1st series is one thing - but that Book 1 is his 1st foray into writing, period?!….
The man is clearly gifted.
I enjoyed this story as much as many of my absolute favorites, and that’s saying a lot! As my favorite books are written by authors who have years (decades in some cases) of experience. Authors who are the top apocalyptic writers today.
Ok - so what did I think of
this book, specifically?….
This story is smart, funny, solid/tight (not a word nor page is fluff), the pacing is just right, it’s exciting, I’ll admit I shed a tear once along the way (happy or sad, not sayin’ which tho!), & it’s completely compelling.
Saylor is a master character writer. In no time you feel like you’re part of the band of brothers & sisters who live within the pages of this story.
And it’s all because Saylor’s character development is so on point; so naturally crafted.
And each one of his cast members are unique. With their own individual strengths, fears, skills, weaknesses, failings, & hopes.
Just like we all are. And that’s what really helps this story come to life. The characters.
In conjunction with their dialogue. Which this author also excels in. Once again- no extraneous page filling nonsense here. Every conversation has a direction. The majority of his characters could be defined as, “straight shooters.”
And the dialogue is (ready for this??..) as nuanced as it is straightforward. Lol!
This is due to Saylor’s skill in emotional language. His writing is so clean, you have no choice but to become lost in the story. Never realizing, or even questioning, how you know what a character is thinking or feeling- without him or her (or “Xi” lol) ever “telling you” verbally or via their internal dialogue. Nor through the author just stating it.
Saylor’s seemless blending of body language (facial expressions, physical mannerisms, etc.), & writing, “all that’s NOT being said” (verbally) by the cast into the story, brings this novel up to a whole new level altogether.
And illustrates perfectly, in a way which is patently evident throughout the entirety of the book, how & why author David Saylor is now On. The. Map.
He’s reached - unquestionably- master wordsmith status. Via his 1st work.
(Remarkably Exceptional!!
And Congratulations!! :)
To add just the extra special cherry a’top the wholly attention possessing dialogue & interactions, Saylor gifted many of his characters with an awesome sense of humor, a 2nd language (sarcasm), &/or with a “soldier’s type” of comedic edge.
(I’d love to be his friend- bet he’s a blast to hang out with! Ha! ;)
Of course there are action scenes. But definitely more to come in the future, as Book 1 is clearly the foundation upon which the rest of the series will be built. And it is in this 1st chapter where “the crisis” truly kicks off.
Saylor also knows his weapons & armor. But not to worry if you aren’t into guns all that much. The writing here is well-balanced for all.
To include relationships. Romantic, yep. (He “knows women” too! Lol :). But also those between friends.
Overall, I cannot say enough positive things about this story, the writing, or the editing.
And I cant find even one con!? Even a tiny one!
Amazing.
So - the bottom line is - get As The Light Dies.
Put your next planned read on hold/postpone, just as I did.
You will be extremely glad you did!
NOTE: They do state at end of Book 1, “Book 2 is complete.. in editing.. will be released early 2023..”
Thus there’s hope! lol
— TY, Boyd & Everyone for this recommendation.
— And TY David. For penning such a da*m fine entertaining read! :)

Excellent pre-apocalyptic fiction! This is a story about a veteran's preparation for disaster, although the disaster he expects is not the one that comes. Our hero has an interesting perspective on the worsening schism between the two main political parties in the US. I must say that being a Conservative is applauded by the author, so, if you are not, you've been warned. Also be advised that he has taken author's license with some of the historical references in here. As with all works of fiction, don't take the political references as Gospel truth.
As a conservative, I really enjoyed the book. It was entertaining and instructional (I question everything and googled a lot of things). Having lived through the times he describes, I appreciate the in-depth perspective on political and social events of the past.
As for the story, it's a good one. Our hero is ex-Army Special Forces Recon, but he's alone in the beginning. He's been mustered out due to the political climate and resentful of it. He was raised to prepare ahead; however, here we see that basic Prepper premise proven: no one can go it alone.
The characters are very well written, fleshed out in not-too-much detail. I enjoyed reading about them, and how they handled their lives. The plot doesn't take my breath away but it's very well written and easy to handle. A few hair raising moments throughout kept me engaged. There's love and hate, and everything in between in the story as it should be. It definitely has its funny moments too.
This is a rare look into the lives of those who are raised to prepare for what life throws at them. If you think that all preppers are nuts, I recommend this book. It's eye-opening. And it's more true to the prepper lifestyle than the idiots you see on TV.
Now, I just wish he had written a series. I'm curious to see how the hero and his extended family would handle the disaster that hits them at the end of the book. I would read it in a heartbeat!

Book Review:
“AS THE LIGHT DIES” Kindle Edition
by David Saylor (Author), Boyd Craven Jr. (Author)
David Saylor did an excellent job of portraying the culture of East Tennessee which is also my “neck-of-the-woods”. I am guessing that he once lived there based on how well he copied the speech patterns. He also knew our local topography, e.g., Knoxville, Maryville, Oak Ridge and Tazewell.
As I write this review in April of 2023, it seems to me that he captures “la malaise culturelle” experienced by Westerners today, e.g., economic decline, loss of law and order, pernicious and malicious gender identity absurdity, profound and ostentatious blatant corruption on a billion dollar scale etc. On a broad historical basis, the German historian, Otto Spengler, wrote about these trends in his opus magnum of the 1920s entitled The Decline of the West (German: Der Untergang des Abendlandes; more literally, The Downfall of the Occident.
One caveat for some readers: David Saylor mentions in his autobiographical sketch that he converted to Christianity and it comes out “preachy” and evangelistic in his novel. As an atheist who taught in a university Dept. of Religion, it does not take anything away from my enjoyment of the book because Middle Eastern superstition easily goes in one of my eyes and out of the other.
Advice: if you wish to read Book Two in this series, I suggest that you read it right after this one because “The Darkness Grows (as the Light Dies)” begins immediately after this one. There is no transition. I am reading the second one now and it is really good too.

This book had a strange feel to it as I read it. There is decent character development. The storylines are decent. The real problem is it reads like it was written by a teenager at times. I am not going into specifics as it is not my intention to expose spoilers. But I will cite 2 things which takes away nothing for a reader that has yet to read this novel.

You do not and cannot place a silencer on a revolver regardless of caliber. Revolvers are made to be loud. There are 6 tanks for fuel storage. A combined total of 180,000 gallons. A car cannot make it up the driveway, this is mentioned numerous times. Getting 30 semi loads of fuel up the driveway causes problems, let alone the logistics of this.

This book is a great story and I found it very enjoyable in many places. There were just times when it reads like a child is making a wish list with absolutely no experience about what was written. I understand this is a work of fiction, but come on man, do a little research when you start using specific nomenclature.

ZERO STARS!!!! This book was right winger's wet dream. I didn't need all those pages to tell me how many and what type of guns Dave had or how many he wanted to buy. It could be used as a blueprint on what guns to buy and how to kill people. Guns are a crisis in this country and this book did nothing but glorify them. Think school shootings. Absolutely, too much right wing BS. I wanted a story not a right wing sermon. I could watch the news and get the same BS. Also, where did he get the money to buy all those guns. NOT on a military pension and no other income except maybe gunrunning. VERY POOR EDITING, the time lines were way off. It took Dave only two weeks to build his paranoid compound. Don't waste your time. It's two hours, I will never get back. David Saylor, I will NEVER read another book you write. Try a different profession.

Book was good to a point. It had Christian overtures which I liked. The man Dave was a Christian and he metS a gal who who appeared to be a Christian and they fell in love and Dave was strong and did not encourage sex. Then he proposed to the gal on a riverboat. That night he walked her to her assign bedroom and he went to his. AND I liked that they were going to obstain. Then later the gal walks to his room and disrobed and that was that. Can't we have values ? So I chose not to buy book two. And also I felt it the event that was announced on radio and tv would no have erupted unruly behavior that fast. It was not believable.

The Magic of Preparedness!

The book and storyline are powerful, laced with characters that are totally engaging. Each page offers excitement and situations that suit the demand of an oncoming disaster of major proportions.
By the finish of book one, we are comfortably part of our new little community. Each person has their assigned position to use their skills and keep the community safe.
It’s a great read, very enjoyable. Would that we all had the monies to prepare as our narrated has done…..that scenario is a bit far fetched. But never mind! The story is done well. Happy reading a well written book!

Very politically focused

This book is well written and while I like a good well written dystopian , I don't like those that focus anger and hatred against the political party opposite to theirs! Authors need to be accountable for the content focus of the novels they create! This was actually the second time I read this book. The first time I just skipped over the hatred and anger. However with what is currently going on in our country these days, this type of writing just fans the flames for many that just follow along and don't do their own research! Way too many are dead and or in jail because of this type of political focus!

The End Of This World

The end of this world as we know it is approaching! This book takes a journey with one man, a former Army Ranger, returning home after serving his country and preparing for what is coming. He begins to bring in his team of former soldiers and family to create a compound on his family’s 200 year old land in Tenn.
This is a great debut novel with a very detailed rendering of the armory tue main character built for protecting his land, friends and family. I am curious as to why he needed an underground bunker and went to the detailed description when it wasn’t used.

A good read. I enjoy the prepper portion of prepper fiction. This book did a good job of delivering on that front. My only criticism (if you want to call it that) is that in my opinion a little less focus on the weaponry would improve the readability of the book. I am not remotely anti-gun. But the amount of text devoted to describing the weaponry seemed excessive.

My review is set forth above in the subject line. My bad. Please be patient with me. Sorry, I will try and do better with future reviews.

A real page turner!

AS THE LIGHT DIES by David Saylor is one of the best books I've read this year (2022). The characters are well-rounded and engaging. Before you know it you'll be worrying for themselves and cheering for them. The plot is extremely plausible especially in this day and age. Although the characters are veterans they're real and not some unrealistic super heroes. They have their worries and triumphs which makes them very human. The action moves along at a very nice pace, not too slow or too fast. And excellent read.

Been a while...

Finally, a post apocalyptic book well worth reading! I devoured it in a day.Aspects of the book reminded me of the " Fire from the sky " series ,which is one of my all-time favorites. The characters are realistic and likeable. The situations are believable and more than likely in the event of a CME or EMP. Although , some members in our government are fully capable of destroying the country without the help of a global disaster..... I will be reading book number 2!

seriously good

Wow , i really enjoyed this book and what a way to start of a series. This story has all the elements that establish a great series. We dont have a singular hero , we have multiple hero’s that bring all the life skills to the table. A former army ranger and his combat buddies prepare for a solar storm that humanity has never experienced before. They use well armed funds to set up a compound for their families and this is what they do to get ready. A story of friendship and of trust. I really really cant wait for the next book.

As the light dies

Exciting book. The theme of this book is frightening because it is such a possibility or just as horrifying an EMP, which would much be worse. I loved the characters Dave, Julie Greg, Robin. It was interesting that Dave had
So much money to be able to create an unbelievable place for everyone. However, and sadly most people would not have that luxury. Honestly that seemed a little over the top! Lovely thought but a little unrealistic.
I did enjoy the book and I'm looking forward to book 2.

Great Beginning

I love the setting in Tennessee. This first book introduces the main character, & his intent to prepare for a future where self reliance is key to survival. He realizes he can’t think of everything himself and needs people with specific skills set that he will need to build a safe homestead
He includes people he can trust to survive and thrive.
The reader is drawn in as the characters think of possible situations they may face and problem solve
This is done so effectively the reader feels they are part of a real apocalypse senecio.

Best of the best

Remarkable!! I loved it! I liked it so much that this is the second time I've read it. It was even better this time.
Remarkable description of a time where people joined together to prepare for the future of difficulties awaiting them.
Love that can't be ignored because the world is changing. Respect for people that should be an automatic awareness. Keep reading you won't regret it.

This was really, really slow!!!! I would skip 1 to 3 pages at a time as the author regularly went on political rants or pages on pages of social commentary! He also went into WAY TOO MUCH detail about almost everything!!

DNF 52% I can't do it anymore. Despite skipping most of the rants, I caught enough to know that this author is the quintessential Trump supporter....and I just can't continue.

Good story telling, but rich and ex SF is an old story

I like the book a decent page turner. The political climate is just too close to the real one. I read books to escape this world full of rich liberals and power-hungry politicians. The story was excellent, and the characters were likable. I ralead alot of this book type.I Very wealthy, I'm entirely trained. Special forces ihas been told a few times.

As the Light Dies

Good pepper book, too bad millions of dollars are needed to prep. People in suburbs are in trouble. But the political culture mentioned is spot on. Individual rights are slowly eroding and free thinkers could be in trouble. Hopefully people aren’t as bad as mentioned in booked. This book has a good list of characters and good pepper guides. The book is a good read.

Superb read.

A super and amazing read, I loved it. I loved the beginning and then laterly the build-up to the Day. It's the best build-up to an apocalypse book that I've read in a while. The characters start with only a couple and more get slowly added as the book goes on until there are many of them and they are all very likeable and believable. An exciting and most enjoyable book and I'm going on to the next book The Darkness Grows and hopefully it'll be just as good.
