There are some serious problems with this book that prevent me from enthusiastically singing its praises. Firstly is the frequency of typos. This book was sloppily edited, which makes for some really unforgivable errors. For example:
Secondly, and worse still, is the bizarre way they decided to structure the chapters. Instead of naming chapters things like "Participles" or "Using the Perfective Aspect," they went with broad categories, like "News Items" or "Anecdote." Within each of these chapters, there were a few topics they felt were relevant to news items or anecdotes. But since you can find pretty much every aspect of any given language within an anecdote or a news article, there doesn't appear to be much rhyme or reason for why certain topics are contained in certain thematic chapters. It makes one completely depending on the index, since scanning chapter descriptions is useless. It should be noted that I read the first edition of this book. When I scanned through the most recent edition, it appears they completely re-hauled the way they structured it. I guess I wasn't the only one who disliked it.
Regardless of these criticisms, I did learn some new things from this book and certainly enriched my understanding of Russian grammar. For that, I feel I owe the book a solid (but not exalted) 3-star rating.
