Setsuna is still trapped in the body of the Angel Alexiel, but he has more important things to worry about now than an identity crisis. Kurai has promised to marry Lucifer in return for restoring Setsuna to his true body--but it turns out that neither the wedding nor the resurrection are as promised. Can Setsuna travel through the pits of Hell in time to break up the nuptial ceremony, or will he and Kurai be damned for all time?
She debuted in 1987 with Natsufuku no Erii (Jap: 夏服のエリー) on the manga anthology Bessatsu Hana to Yume published by Hakusensha. She is best known for her gothic manga works, such as the Earl Cain series (Jap: 伯爵カイン, Hakushaku Cain) and Angel Sanctuary (Jap: 天使禁猟区, Tenshi Kinryōku)
Her work is typically serialized in one of Hakusensha's two shōjo manga anthologies, Bessatsu Hana to Yume and Hana to Yume. In 2010, Kaori Yuki was one of many manga artists whose work would appear in the new shōjo manga anthology Aria by the publisher Kodansha on July 28, 2010. Her doujinshi-ka name is MoonClock.
It had been a quick read because I'd re-read Angel Sanctuary vol. 10 for so many times in the past. Hand down this volume and the other few volumes from vol. 7 to vol. 11 are the finest among Ms. Kaori Yuki's creations.
The princess of the demon clan, Kurai, had promised to marry Lucifer, the Lord of Hells, in exchange for the revival of Setsuna, but is the Mad Hatter, one of the Grand Dukes of Hells, planning something else with this marriage? Setsuna and Co. must travel to the depth of the nineth level Hells in order to save Kurai, dramas ensued and we meet many charming Grand Dukes/Demons Lords (who happen to look like many of my beloved visual kei rock band artists *laughs*) along the way.
I used to live for Kaori Yuki and all those cool visual kei bands in the past. XD
I really want to like this series. The world is richly developed, the artwork is beautiful, and the characters are interesting, but my main issue with it is that it's spent several volumes now becoming more confusing. So much is going on, and it doesn't feel as if it's all under control. At the midpoint of the series, I feel like as soon as something gets resolved (or halfway-resolved), a new mystery springs up. I guess an epic plot like this needs continuously-growing mysteries to keep moving, but right now, as a reader, I feel like I'm adrift on a flimsy raft in a choppy sea. I guess we'll see how I feel about the series as I get closer to the end.
A god continuing story, if a bit convoluted at times. Once you get past the first 3 or 4 volumes, this series get good, and the most icky part gets pushed way to the background. An interesting story with a good bit of drama.
No matter how hard he tries, Setsuna always manages to run into trouble, and his love for his sister is just one of many things that seem to be going wrong. It is only when two demons appear and make his life an even bigger mess that Setsuna comes to realise all his misfortunes might be linked to the fallen angel Alexiel.
I would definitely consider Angel Sanctuary a great and classic manga. But for all that, I am sure it does not appeal to everyone. In addition to the incestuous relationship between Setsuna and his sister Sara, there are drugs and alcohol, gruesome murders and mutilations, rape, child murder, a twisted view on religion and god, suicide, characters whose minds turn grotesque and obsessive - the list goes on. These are subjects that might be very appealing to some, but also very problematic for others.
I belong to the latter - usually, these subjects would automatically cause me to stay clear from such a book. It is truly a macabre tale, and that's just the way Kaori Yuki's works go. Yet despite my reluctance to give such subjects a try, I can say that whether one likes it or not, there's no denying that this is a brilliantly crafted story with an impressive amount of meaningful characters.
Kaori Yuki's art and stories all suffer and gain from the same thing: the sheer mass of detail. Her art is absolutely gorgeous with all the fine hair and cloth and just all the immense details. But at times, it can make the pages overcrowded and confusing - it certainly takes a longer time to read than your average manga. The story is at times likewise confusing as anything - it can be hard to keep track of which panels come first. But it's the wonderfully interwoven plot that remains a solid point throughout. The smallest details from the first volume can become relevant in the later ones and there is one plot twist after the another. There's never a boring moment as we follow Setsuna unravelling all the intrigues that surround the large cast.
Although I would consider the plot a strong point of this work, it is yet the characters who seem to turn it into something special. I have rarely come across a manga with so many characters who all have diverse and deep personalities. You get to love and hate all of them as even the most villainous ones prove to have something very humane and rather pitiful about them. In the end, one wonders - who was the true villain, if there was one at all? But with all the variety, there's no denying that the majority of them are broken characters. Every one of them seems to be involved in one twisted mess or another.
Luckily, there are great bonds of love, friendship and family that stand strong throughout the story and every now and then offer a well deserved comic relief. Angel Sanctuary is most certainly worth a try for any who enjoy strong character-driven stories that'll leave you with a hard time picking out a favourite character.

Sehr schade.

Still trapped in the body of organic angel Alexiel, Setsuna has gone on a quest to hell to find Kurai, with help from Noyz and Arachne. At least until Arachne turns traitor and tries to push Setsuna off their boat into a river that will make him lose all his memories! And on Sara's side, a fake Savior that is imitating Setsuna sends a challenge to Lord Michael. Lord Michael, Lord Raphael, and Sara venture to the predetermined meeting place set by the imitator, only to fall into a trap involving the resurrection of Setsuna's human body..!
Well, this was a very informative volume. Not only did we see further into Hatter's backstory, but we learned the entire backstory of fallen angel/demon prince/princess Belphegor (*shudder*). Or well, Kaori Yuki-sensei named them something different and turned them into something completely different, but as long as they hold the same position as Belphegor, I shall call them Belphegor. Both of them. Also, it appears that Kira's backstory might also be revealed as well. It already has, you say? That's what I thought oo, but apparently he was more than just a sword in the beginning. Ooohh~... I've read too many volumes in a row though. I'm getting bored with this series again. >_>
Setsuna, in Alexiel's body, goes to Hell ot try to save Kurai. But, never a shrinking violet, Kurai is trying to save herself. Unfortunately, she gets bounced from the realm of one of the great denizens of Hell to another, and all of them have their own purposes.
As for Setsuna, he's trying to help, while Noyz is a captive of Hatter and Arachne. We get some of the backstory of Arachne, which I actually liked and wished we got a bit more in-depth with. While what she's doing is wrong, you can understand the horror and frustration of what happened before.
the book ends on a heck of a cliffhanger, as they cut through the floor of the wedding area to find something terribly unexpected.
This one was fast-paced and introduced a bevy of interesting characters. I'm just afraid it didn't spend enough time on a lot of it to really flesh them out, which is a shame.
There are certain scenes of this story that didn't age well such as scenes where certain characters are almost sexually assaulted or where sexual harassment is made into a joke but aside from that this volume was very enjoyable. I do not recommend this manga for anyone younger than 17. I will type a full review soon. This is my second time fully reading this book,I first read this volume fully in the year 2018.
