In space, no one will hear them moan.

A Men in Space story.

The job was supposed to be an easy one for Captain Kar and his two-man land the Danaus on the deserted moon, appropriate a few boxes of precious chromore, and jump out of the system before the Guardians could get to them. Even Will and Jay’s inability to keep their hands off each other for any length of time should not have been too much of a problem.

They discover too late it’s the laineards’ mating season. The resulting sexual pheromones begin to affect them as soon as they step off the ship. With Will and Jay losing their minds to lust, and Kar himself blinded by visions of the two men he has wanted for months, things suddenly get much harder than expected.

Their only hope for not ending up in jail is to get out of there before the Guardians find them. Except an open loading dock contaminated the air inside the Danaus. And Kar will have to resort to drastic measures to keep Jay and Will apart long enough to escape…

Kallysten is a writer of romance novels and short stories, most of them with paranormal elements.

Her first eBooks were published by Linden Bay Romance in 2005. The defunct Venus Press subsequently published a few of her short stories. Because so many of her stories are linked as series and part of the same universe, she decided it would make sense to have them all in the same place, which is why she self-published, first with the co-op Alinar Publishing and now on her own. When she sees calls for submissions that speak to her muse, she sometimes tries for them, and was published this way by Samhain and Torquere.

An interesting read of lust and desire of three men in space. Kar commands a freighter trading where and when he can to eek out a living for himself and his crewmen, Jay and Will. During a trade Kar is urged to acquire chromore. Mined on a nearby moon he and his crew set off. The moon is temporarily deserted and only herds of laineards remain. All this seems strange and makes taking the chromore seem all to easy. Will these three survive their landing? Will they outrun the Guardians? Will they survive each other?

The concept for this book is an interesting one. It's what drew me to this book in the first place. Unfortunately, it lacks the necessary development to be an amazing story.

For one, the blurb is a bit more informative than the actual story is. Whereas the blurb allows readers to know the storyline is essentially caused by 'laineards’ mating season' the book never actually states the reason the pheromones from the 'animal compound' is in the air and how it actually affects them. Since I didn't read the blurb right before I started the book, I had no knowledge it was a mating season that caused their lust, I just thought the air on the planet was permanently like that. That along with a few other minor details makes this book feel incomplete if, and only if, you read the blurb.

I enjoyed these characters because you can feel the sexual tension between them and it just escalates when they come into contact with the pheromones from the laineards. Unfortunately, while there is a lot of sexual tension there is also a lot of sex. That's cool and all but it was too much for me especially when the story lacked the explanation and descriptions I so desperately wanted. However, I really did love these characters. Kar forces himself to always be in control of his desires and since he is the captain, it's even more crucial for him to keep his hands off his two-man crew. Jay is a stubborn smart-ass while Will is eager, overly sexed but always enthusiastic. The occasional banter and arguing was definitely worth it.

So, while I loved the characters and the premise, I didn't much like the lack of world-building and too much sex. This would have been an awesome story if it just had more detail and less smexing. :-/

When I picked up Moonlust, I was looking for a quick, light, sexy read and that is exactly what I got. The narrative is strictly about the build-up and execution of an all male ménage scene. There is just enough detail about the character’s personalities and their situation to keep the action moving – think of it as porn with just enough plot. : )

Moonlust is part of a 3-part anthology of sci-fi/space stories, with each novella sold separately. Some of the novellas are better than others and this particular offering is the weakest of the trio. The world building and characterization is scant and unexplored while the main focus of the story, the ménage, doesn’t really answer any relationship dynamics. The ending is a happy for now, so those readers wanting a strong happy ever after ending may be disappointed. Overall this is a decent, quick read but not interesting or fleshed out enough to be memorable.

The plot focuses on traders that are asked to steal a rare mineral called chromore. It just so happens that a festival is occurring and the planet where the mineral is mined and stored is empty. Thus allowing the traders to swoop in, steal the mineral, and be on their way. Of course nothing is that easy as it’s mating time on the planet and the traders get influenced by the strong pheromones leading to rampant sex.

The characters in the novella are all briefly explained and given enough background to differentiate them from each other but they never fully develop beyond flat, two dimensional characters. Kar is the pilot and owner of the ship while Jay and Will are crew members. All three men want each other but only Jay and Will gave in to their desire until pheromones of this planet let Kar delve into his fantasies of both men. Each man is given a hint of more but their past, present, and future are all largely unexplored. The reasons each man has to doing what they are and their choices are not fully explained and beyond sex with each, their purpose in the story is weak. The character of Jay is perhaps the most developed but he plays off the stereotype of a rich childhood rebelling against the family dynasty.

Just as the characters lacked substance, the world building is rudimentary and plays on classic science fiction/space odsessy tropes. There is very little external world building and instead the familiar themes and gadgets associated with popular science fiction litter the story. This makes for an easy read with few new ideas but still leaves the actual dynamics of this setting unexplained. There is a ruling body called The Lodge that has some connection but the details aren’t fleshed out. Additionally the space adventure is actually a sexual one so the action portion is pretty much how will the three men get it on and how many times.

The problems are confounded by the head hopping in the story and the point of view changing frequently. This is rarely confusing so much as frustrating that the story attempts to keep the POVs separate with page breaks yet head hops in the middle of a scene to show all thoughts of the men. Readers who dislike such changes will be frustrated by the number of them here. Mostly, the length is perfect for a quick, easy story about some sexy men in space with a dash of pirating. The ménage relationship is questionable, as is the lasting nature, but for men that don’t mind and just want some great sex – everything works out. Not exactly a memorable story but very little to really turn off readers.

Usually a sci-fiction story tends to have a “grandeur” feeling; maybe it’s the great expanse of the space, of those spaceships, big and cold. You almost get lost in those spaceships, and the simple men who work in there are in second line, all the high tech solutions are the main characters and the men succumb to them.

Moonlust takes a turn from the usual plot and uses a very old fashioned device to do that, the mating fever. At first Kar met Jay alone, Kar had a very old spaceship he needed someone to pilot and Jay was the right man; probably Jay was not right only for the spaceship, he was right also for its captain, but Kar feared to be hurt from Jay’s possible future deception (how an old fashioned feeling, the old as time fear to fail that pushes men to not even try). Consciously or unconsciously, it’s not clear, Kar hired also Will, a pretty hot young thing who is immediately all octopus over Jay. But Kar clever diversion backfires him: now he has not only to avoid Jay, now he has to avoid the both of them together, who are all over each other at every moment and in every place of the ship!

Kar is barely managing to do that when a mission sends them to an alien planet during the mating season: the pheromones in the air produce an unexpected side effect also on them. Or maybe Kar is saying to himself that to justify why he is suddenly in bed with both Jay than Will and he is enjoying every moment.

As I said, other than being setting in a spaceship sailing unknown routes, this novella is basically a funny romp. Unusually for me, I like all three men in the ménages: Kar is almost tender in his “I want/I don’t want to want” attitude towards Jay, and it’s almost funny how he put himself in a bigger danger when he hired Will to “distract” Jay; Jay has those mystery aura around himself, and basically that easy attitude that makes him like a rascal, a character that I always liked in romance; and finally Will, the happy-to-go boy, the one who is always smiling, the one who wants to make everyone happy… obviously if this means making himself happy along with.

How this story came to be...

In the summer 2009, someone pointed me to the Samhain website, where a call for Space Opera novellas was posted. I was out of a job at the time - that is, I had A LOT of time on my hands - and even though space opera / sci-fi is not a genre I have written recently, I thought... why not try? It could be a fun challenge, and if nothing else it'd keep me busy.

The submission deadline was less than a month away when I became aware of the call for stories. I brainstormed with a few friends, and some ideas they threw at me were, "What if zero-g sex was addictive?", "your characters were on a ship with air-tight compartments, and there was an accident involving depressurization. The characters are trapped in small groups and must work together via limited communication" and "What if the planet we landed on wasn't as harmless as it let on?"

I didn't go for zero-g sex, but the 'addictive' part of the first idea turned into the 'can't resist' part of the story.

No depressurization either, but the air-tight cabin and communication through video and radio was a fun thing to write.

The last idea was pretty much what sparked it all. Once I figured out why the planet wasn't so harmless, I was set. Three men, a lot of sex... I did mention it was a hot summer and I was bored, right?

I bought this book awhile ago and it just sat on my e-shelf, waiting to be read. I'm mad I didn't read it sooner. What an awesome read! I loved all of the characters, and I found the situation Kar, Will, and Jay found themselves in to be simultaneously hilarious and hot as hell.

The story is short, and I was not ready to leave Kar and his crew behind. This is a book I will definitely reread in the future. The chemistry between Will and Jay is adorable, and once Kar is brought in on the action things get even hotter. My favorite moment was when Jay manages to get free and joins them. Damn.

I would love to see how they would handle their new relationship on future assignments, even though I know this is highly unlikely to have a sequel. Still worth the read!

This book didn't hold my attention as much as the first two in the series. The character's motivations (beyond being horny) weren't clear and I couldn't find a connection to any of them.

Will and Jay are a couple and Kar, the captain, keeps looking on, wanting them both but holding himself back. When they land on a moon to "obtain" some mineral for a trade, they suddenly can't control their libido any longer. I found this to be a little contrived an without much background, didn't know quite what to do with it. There was lots of very hot sex, but I missed a plot, or even a point to the story.

Gay Menage sci-fi novella, in which the all business captain finally joins his two crew members for a lust filled cargo run, due to the fact that it's mating season on the planet they land on and everyone gets a heavy dose of pheremones. Will appeal to fans of Edward Ellis' The Pheremone Bomb. OK - Very sexy, but bit lite on character development and plot. Probably the weakest story in the Men in Space anthology, but worth a read.

I liked it. ^_^

I didn't expect Jay and Will to already been in a relationship but it worked well, and adding Kar to the mix was just freaking hot. ^_^
