Change Your Habits, Change Your Life is a well-written self-help book about habits in which the author guides on how to develop a sustainable habit system for a lifetime to make life better, healthy, and productive.

It was interesting to read author’s definition of the ‘Habit‘ – “An action or thought that is repeated at a set frequency. This may or may not become subconscious over a period of time.”

I agree with what author said about how habits are routine and how routine are a series of habit train, some turns into a ritual that is tied to our emotions. I loved author’s practical and realistic approach of incorporating new habits into daily habit train and it made sense not to disturb the ritual in doing so.

I absolutely loved those three golden rules, habit myths, and the author’s idea on good and bad habits. Another thing I loved is real-life examples and the exercises at the end of the chapters.

There are many takeaways from the book. Some I already knew and have followed while some were new to me that I’m currently trying. I loved the emphasis on the importance of consistency and practice, making the journey of creating habits easy and fun.

Did it help me? It’s too early to say but the book sure motivated me (the author wouldn’t like me using the word) to keep trying and make the necessary changes that I want in life.

Why 4 stars -

There are only 5 success stories in the book and certain kind of life scenarios. I wish there were more stories that covered more different kinds of life situations.

Overall, Change Your Habits Change Your Life is an insightful, informative, and inspiring self-help book with practical and realistic ideas and style.

Old habits die hard, they say. But if you try with all your might and consistently, they will. And not all habits need to die. Only those that cause us harm and to our society need to. This is what the book is all about. It speaks about the importance of habits, habit changing, and habit forming across all dimensions. Not only does the author have a very cool surname, but also a very unconventional, exciting approach to a non-fiction, self-help book.

The book starts with the author's personal journey on health and his realisation of the importance of habit forming. It is divided into chapters that concentrate on the principles and importance of habits and the golden rules of habit changing. This book works for everyone as it is not monotonous, and it's unconventionally non-fiction as it also narrates experiences and reflections from the author's past. Every chapter begins with an interesting take on the author's past that leads to a guide on specific topics like food, running, mental health, exercise, relationships and much more. Activities at the end of each chapter and section give us the window to reflect on our habits and make amendments for change.

The language is straightforward, the writing is eloquent so that it is understandable to all, and the chapters are super short and crisp so that it stays relevant to the topic. It's not too preachy and comes from the author's own experiences as a habit coach, and it shows. I liked how all the dimensions of health were covered in the book, and I would recommend this to everyone looking to change their habits and seeking help for change. The only drawback I faced in the book was that after reading too many self-help books, I feel the format has become standard across all of them while a lot more is left to be explored. Nevertheless, this book stands out among them with its narrative style and relevancy. I recommend this book to everyone. It is a must-read self-help.

Habits are not just difficult to change but sometimes seems impossible to even alter them. The book Change your Habits, Change your Life is an inspiring and insightful book based on this bug called habit. The author Ashdin a Habit coach puts in simple words , how small changes in our lifestyle or rather Habits, can bring about a massive change in leading a better life.

The book is divided into 26 chapters , each serving the purpose they are being written to fulfill. It begins with the author sharing his personal experiences on how despite facing a lot of hurdles, and irresistible temptations to let go halfway, with sheer determination and patience he overcame the challenges, and emerged successfully in his journey towards fitness.

Overall a book that helps and motivated you to be a happier and better version of yourself, effortlessly with the right changes along with practice, consistency and patience. For a detailed review visit

Let’s be honest! The market is flooded these days with books that almost guarantee you a spectacular life, a life that is fulfilling and a life wherein everything is just perfect! Basically, they nearly assure you of a dream life! All you need to do is make some changes, draw some charts in your notebook, download an app, follow a tip or a trick and basically do everything that the book asks you to do and BAM! You have your dream life!
However, the life-altering and most important question here is ‘for how long?’

For how long will you actually practice all of those life-changing lessons you learnt from these books and have your supposed dream life?
A week, a month, 2 months; and then what?
Back to square one!
And that’s the reason I think 10 times before picking up any such book.

After much deliberation, I decided to pick up ‘Change Your Habits, Change Your Life’ and all I can say is – Everyone should THIS book!
Yes! It is that good.
Why?
Because, unlike most books wherein motivation is the centre of the subject, in this book, Author Ashdin Doctor, tells you to in fact discard motivation from your trajectory.
Instead, he asks you to focus on your intention.
Quoting him- ‘The key is to always remember that an external desire to change is fuelled by Motivation, while an internal desire to change is fuelled by Intention’

He asks us to focus on our system because while the outer sources such as Inspiration and Motivation might fail, it is your system that will keep you going.
He has addressed some real-world problems in his book that have been extracted right from his interactions and experiences with his clients as a Habit Coach.

Ashdin has provided some exercises within the book that he also uses with his clients which I must say are very helpful as it will help you chalk out a pathway and help you understand the meaning and reason behind the habits you want to inculcate and the changes you want to create in your life.

I’ll be sharing some excerpts from the book in my next post for you to decide if the book is worth picking. As for me, it did wonders!

14th Book of 2023

I remember the time when I was in my last phase of teenage when everything was going wrong for me. It wasn’t the era when social media was omnipresent. If one had to come out of their below-average life, one had to learn their lessons only through books. Thankfully, I read one then which taught me about the importance of managing our day well as eventually the same days are later collectively called as month, year and life. One thought changed me enough to concentrate on how I live my day with good habits forming major part of it. It’s 15 years since then but I am yet fascinated by the power of good habits which made me pick up another book based upon it named “Change your habits, change your life” written by Ashdin Doctor. The book also goes along with a tagline which says “Your guide to an awesome life”.

Speaking about the author, Ashdin calls himself a Habit Coach who helps his clients understand how they can bring granular changes in their daily routine to finally get out of bad habits and follow all the good habits they always wanted to indulge in. He has a Youtube channel where he shares tips regularly as well as conduct podcasts which helps us understand perspectives on this. Ashdin knows well how to engage his readers and just as he advises to insert habits gradually in our routine, he takes us into the important concepts gradually after preparing us well to not get overwhelmed right from the 1st sentence itself. This book falls into the self-help genre and hence, unlike other books, it doesn’t try to motivate you in your face but speaks like a friend.

Ashdin has kept the tone conversational without trying to sound preachy. The book has been divided in several segments and further into smaller chapters. Every chapter is further explained in different bullet points which makes it easier for you to make notes while reading. At the end, author asks us to do an exercise. Frankly speaking, the book needs to be read slowly at the pace of one chapter per day so that you can do your exercises mindfully making you understand Ashdin’s intent behind every chapter clearly.

In the 1st 10 pages itself, I was floored by the two formulas that is been shared: One being – Routines + Emotions = Rituals and second – Habits + Routines + Rituals = Life. The impact of simply these two concepts blew my mind and I understood that I am going to read something very important further in this book. The explanation of Inspiration and Motivation is also defined properly which helps you in understanding that both of these are extrinsic factors whereas what you should be focusing upon is Intention for which you want to inculcate certain habit in your life. In one chapter, author discusses several frictions that comes in between when we are about to take first step towards a good habit and how we can fight against them in order to avoid getting distracted.

Later, there’s a story author shares about Milo and the Bull which is one of the most effective short stories I have ever read. It helped me understand what the power of compounding can do to our lives if we stay focused on improving every day. I liked the two-day concept shared by Ashdin which tells how we can work upon our habits by not dying to execute it every day but trying to maintain a balance initially with our current lifestyle and the proposed lifestyle. In the last chapter, Doctor shares case study of around 5 patients on whom he worked where each of them came to him with different problem statement and goal. This helps us understand how different kind of problems can be treated by focusing on just one part of our life – Building good habits.

Overall, this book is of around 200 pages which can be completed by anyone within few sittings. You can even read it multiple times to keep yourself refreshed with the concepts. Talking about the drawbacks, I must say that most of what Ashdin has shared is already mentioned in some book or Youtube video hence there are very pages which are actually unique. Similarly, I feel that there could have been a better way of describing few concepts with examples and diagrammatical representation to make them look more realistic and effective. Rest, this book should be on your shelf if you are fighting with your cluttered life. I give this book 3.7 stars out of 5.

Thanks!

"Habit is the intersection of knowledge (what to do), skill (how to do), and desire (want to do). -Stephen R. Covey

Habits are the small decisions you make and actions you perform every day. According to researchers at Duke University, habits account for about 40 percent of our behaviors on any given day. Your life today is essentially the sum of your habits.

With these lines you would have guessed very well that here is a book dealing with the world of “Habits’

Yes, it is a brilliant book by ASHIN DOCTOR titled CHANGE YOUR HABITS, CHANGE YOUR LIFE

The book has 200 pages finely organised into 26 chapters with a varied perspective and focus on habits.

How our habits determine our life? How habits can be changed for our better good? All these are presented before the readers by the author who is also a Habit coach.

The book is sure to keep the readers hooked and motivate them to bring out their best in their lives. THE THREE GOLDEN RULES OF HABIT CHANGE is the one that will surely assists the readers to build good habits. As Good habits are powerful. They bring about change one step at a time, and they help you ensure that these changes become part of your life. However, you're far more likely to reach your goal if you make your new habits part of your regular routine.

Examples and exercises given in the book are quite practical and pushes the readers to think, act and move ahead with their habits and related issues.

The topics like the power of patience, the power of consistency time and again prove to be the ever- lasting steps to be successful in any endeavor of life. Along with if we deal everything with a bit of creativity the result will be more profound. I quote “every time you do the habit, see how you can make it better. The key aspects of change can be location, time of the day and tools used.”

The author tried to erase few myths, highlighted the key differences between challenges and habits, pointed out the role of an accountability partner and suggest to gain experience from the stumbles and falls. Moreover fear of change Vs desire for change is clearly explained and guided to have clear intentions for positive impact of habits and change in life.

Readers are not meant only to read this book but also to implement the discussed ideas and can track their habits with the tools which were included in this book. The book is a full pack of contents to see a positive change in habits and in turn in their lives.

Habits can play an important role in multiple aspects of our life, including mental and physical health, productivity, relationships, and self-esteem. It's always possible to build new, helpful habits and change habits that no longer align with our needs. In this regard the book makes a good read for all and initiates us to have a better future.

How often do we introspect our habits? Most of us do not even realize the habits we have formed over the years, until a third person points them out. Change your habits, change your life — sounds simple but giving up on habits that have been around for years or decades is not an easy task. At the the beginning of the book, when the author mentioned that even thoughts — both positive and negative are habits, I was surprised, as we often fall into such thought loops unintentionally.

What I particularly liked about this book is that the author does not go into theoretical knowledge of what is a habit and how it is formed, rather explains how to slowly come out of it, if we think it is a bad habit/one that is impacting us negatively.

There is a simple exercise at the end of each chapter that can be followed by the reader to implement the ideas presented in that chapter. The simple language used by the author and how the concepts are explained makes the book easy to read and understand even for novice readers.

The five success stories in the last chapter are however my favorite, as everyday problems faced by us have been solved in a realistic way by the author, by providing suggestions that are relatable and easy to follow. Like how most of us become inactive to borderline obese once we settle down in a desk job or struggle to fall asleep with an overactive mind that refuses to relax even past the bedtime.

While those who already read similar books on habits and approaches to habit change may find some ideas repetitive, the whole crux of identifying the habits that are affecting our life negatively and following a holistic procedure to change them is well outlined in the book.

I liked the book because it adopts a compassionate approach to becoming a productive and happier you. Rome wasn’t built in a day and you didn’t get these habits in a day, so the change won’t happen in a day. As the famous Persian Islamic theologian, scholar and mystic poet Rumi said, “Recognize that unlearning is the highest form of learning.”

I have taken out a new journal and started doing all the exercises that are given in the book. I would certainly like to shorten my digital and screen time, get up early, go for a nature walk and enjoy the day without pains and aches and ring in more profits from my career.Going by the author’s suggstion, I have kept the book as a visual cue in a place where I see it easily and bookmarked the exercise page.

My rating is purely based on how much I gained knowledge from this book and has nothing to do with the book alone. As someone who watches alot of productivity videos and write my own based on small experiments and read similar books/articles I have rated this book. Ashdin's podcast is what drew me to it. Definitely worth reading if you want to change your habits. Since my ADHD plays bigger role , few of these are not applicable for me and needs tweaking ( which I'm doing on my own , learning more about the symptoms) and hence the rating.

First of all I really enjoyed the book. It’s was an inspiration for me. As I am person who believe in habit rather than motivation stuff. To bring small changes in our life we have to first make it a habit and practice consistently. Which I personally followed and it gave amazing results in my life. Especially to lose weight and gain confidence. One of the key takeaways from this book resonated with me is consistency and never skip 2 days in a row.
