Fiona Watt is an Editorial Director and writer at Usborne Publishing. She started working at Usborne in 1989 and has written and edited hundreds of books including baby and novelty, sticker, art and craft, cookery, science and activity books. Fiona graduated from Exeter University with a B.Ed. (Hons.), specialising in Psychology and Art and Design. After university she worked as a researcher and writer for a company which published educational material for places where children went on school visits (zoos, museums, stately homes etc). She then taught seven, eight, and nine year olds for five years; three years at a state school in Sevenoaks in Kent, and two years at The British School in the Netherlands in The Hague.
Having joined Usborne in 1989, Fiona became an editorial director in 2003, largely responsible for writing baby and novelty books, as well as art and activity titles. She has written over 100 titles for Usborne Publishing, perhaps most notably the, ‘That’s not my ….‘ touchy-feely series.
I love these Touchy Feely books so much! I squirm and wiggle with glee as soon as I see them. Mum wants me to touch the squishy and rough bits to feel to learn about textures, but I just want to grab the pages and turn them! At first it was hard work learning how to grab the page. Then I couldn’t work out how to let go of the page and would just flap it open and closed. And now I can turn the page like mum does and I smash through the book real quick and then we get to do it again and again and again...
Jack borrowed this book from the Ashland Public Library.
Finally, Mama picked a successful book! I chose this one because he loves the others in the series, and he's not been interested in like any of the library books I've selected lately. But this one was a winner.
Jack read it on his own and with Dada and loved feeling the different textures and looking at the "trucks" (which is what he calls all cars right now).
We read this at a garden party by Kinghorn loch. it belonged to one of her friends. when we needed a quiet moment I put her in her sling and read her this. It gave her a peaceful minute which geared her back up for another few hours of fun.
I like to begin story time with attention grabbers or very simple books. Any of the Usborne touchy-feely books is sure to please the younger crowd. Our story times include babies to kindergartners. Beginning this way engages everyone. These books are great to use in a lap-time library program. They are perfect for the home library collection and will be "worn out with love".
My little baby is now starting to get old enough to check out 1-2 books at the library on our trips! And this is one of the got on our last one. I am slowly getting an intro to Usborne books, and so far I really like them. And the touchy-feely books are PERFECT for little hands. Logan loved reading this over and over-feeling all the fun pictures of cars.
This book has great sensory words and is great for babies. Also, the touchy-feely pages help interest children in books. Look for the mouse on each page. Check out my page to purchase this book: www.ubah.com/s2995
The *That's Not My...* books are a fantastic series for babies up to 18 months old. While any board book with different textures can be a great tool for promoting sensory and language development, this particular series was my son's favorite.
