DNF. This collection of 7 short stories by the Germany-famous author-moderator-literature guru Elke Heidenreich is a real disappointment. I read 4 and quit out of boredom and exasperation.
Ever buy an album based on a radio release and discover that every song on it sounds exactly the same? That's this collection. It's the same song - that is, the same characters, the same situations, the same ideas, the same point - simply repeated with (somewhat) different plots and (somewhat) different settings.
Short story writer's perspective:
From a technical standpoint, the structures are just messy. All of them start very strongly, however, promising an absorbing, stimulating read with tight, on-the-money focus or a narrative voice that captivates...but then after three or four pages peters out into a meandering, often boring hash of dialog and observations about what could generously be termed "life 'n stuff from an unhappy, drunken 50-year old's POV".
The particulars:
1. Die schönsten Jahren. Flat with an ending predictable from the middle of the story if you are paying attention.
2. Silberhochzeit. The best one style-wise, but structured far more like a movie scene than a story. At least it has a clear conclusion.
3. Der Tag, als Boris Becker ging. Like entertaining oneself in a revolving door for 25 pages. Goes nowhere, just revolves around and around and around.
4. Ein Sender hat Geburtstag. Painfully, painfully bad attempt at comedy that is so long-winded and structurally lopsided, one wonders how it even made it into the collection.
I stopped there. My TBR pile is too big to wait around see if this collection gets any better.... 2 stars.

maybe the most ugly cover I have ever seen. And the short stories... it just didn't resonate with me.

The short stories about life, family, friendhips, love, sex, alcohol are engaging, provoking, grasping.
The last one have for me a special meaning.
I would give 5 stars but the story about the birthday of the broadcast was not really good. I had the impression it was more self-referential than else

Perfect short stories (except for one, maybe): those that make you smile and laugh out loud and sad and they mention literature and music without seeming pretentious and just lovely.
