You could do an activity where the students have to point out the different steps in the scientific method at they see in the story. Plot as you read, or have them do it in small groups.

Can you use deductions and clues to solve mysteries? Second graders enjoy reading this book. Great word choice. Book brocken into separate cases of Gail solving a mystery.
