Developed with the cooperation of a science consultant, this book in the Primary Physical Science series is a tool to teach the physical sciences to young children. Touch It! follows science curricula and is loaded with surprising facts and hands-on activities designed to hold young readers' interest and tap into their fascination with the everyday world. Touch It! explores materials -- their color, shape, texture, size, mass, magnetism and more.
This reads like a textbook. It's quite informative and accessible to the age group it's targeted for. As a companion volume to a first grade science curriculum, it would work quite well. However, it's not, as far as I can tell, designed as a textbook. It's presented as a work of popular nonfiction, and, as a member of that genre, it falls disappointingly short. Textbooks simply aren't anyone's idea of a fun read, even at the highly inquisitive age of seven.
