Louis Dearborn L'Amour was an American novelist and short story writer. His books consisted primarily of Western novels, though he called his work "frontier stories". His most widely known Western fiction works include Last of the Breed, Hondo, Shalako, and the Sackett series. L'Amour also wrote historical fiction (The Walking Drum), science fiction (The Haunted Mesa), non-fiction (Frontier), and poetry and short-story collections. Many of his stories were made into films. His books remain popular and most have gone through multiple printings. At the time of his death, almost all of his 105 existing works (89 novels, 14 short-story collections, and two full-length works of nonfiction) were still in print, and he was "one of the world's most popular writers".

This is a collection of six short stories about the men who worked the cattle ranches of the Amerrican West and rode for the brand. There are stories of loyalty and courage.

"Lonigan" is a collection of frontier stories personally selected and introduced by the author with an "Author's Note" providing background on significant details in each story. "Rowdy Rides to Glory" was the first short story that ever brought chills down my back. It included an underdog cowboy, mystery, danger, romance, and an exciting rodeo. I appreciate that L'Amour does not use profanity or sex to sell his books. His well-written novels and short stories have a hero or two, the main villain, twists and surprises. Descriptions of western locations by L'Amour put you right in each scene. You only have to read one short story to understand why Louis L'Amour has sold more books than any other author in history. It is a delight to find one of his books I haven't read. I had to put everything else on hold to spend a day reading it. What pleasure.

Simply put, these are some of the best short stories I have read. Not simply L'Amour stories or Western shorts, but the best short stories across all genres. If you want a couple of excellent hours spent reading or a prime example of how to write a short, get this book!

Cheesy but in a comforting way....I liked the little introductions in the beginning of each chapter that give a little background history about the setting of the story....I will definitely be picking up more books by this author

Short stories are perfect for days when you have to leave your book for a long time. The stories of tough western men is an ideal read in these days. Classic Louis L'Amour. The good guys win, which is how it should be.

Given the era women probably didn’t own property and a woman on a cattle drive would have been unheard of but after all this is fiction.

The dramatization I listened to complete with background music was a pleasant way to pass an hour.

Lonigan never shows up to head the cattle drive, so a young woman must take the herd to market. She discovers that you might not want to trust strangers, or should she?

Really enjoyed this. I just finished "Dodge City." An accurate collection of biographies of Earp, Masterson and their ilk. Reading this fiction after the non-fiction is great!

Written in 1988. Six short stories. Much gruesome killing of animals and men, with a few scarce lovely women in attendance, therefore, old-type stories.

I was interested, written in one of the six intros by "Louis L'Amour", that the "Old West" passed into oblivion in about 1915.

Even though the tales in Lonigan are short stories, they are very well-developed and fun to read. Like most L'Amour characters, these guys are all tough problem solvers. These are men that you love to read about as they right the wrongs. Everyone loved a tough good guy, and nobody writes them better the L'Amour.

Louis L'Amour can bring the west alive and makes you long for the days when life was a lot simpler. This was a time when men wore guns and were quick with their decisions; fight or flight. So, if you want to read about the real tough guys, pick up this Louis L'Amour book. Heck, pick up any of them . . . they are all good.

Lonigan is a wonderful collection of short stories by Louis L'Amour.

I rated this book an 8 out of 10.

I love a lot of Louis L'Amour's books. I especially like the books that are collections of shorter stories. This one is pretty good. As with a lot of L'Amour's collections-- some are exceptional and some are merely so-so. I like the title story and the story called "Rowdy Rides to Glory" the best. The girl Jenny Welham is a real jerk, but Vaho Rainey is a lot better. I sometimes find the female characters a little shallow in LL's westerns, but that could be just me. :)

This is a group of short stories by Louis L'Amour who by all accounts is America's most prolific writer on the American West. This is a collection of character studies of late 19th century cowboys, gunslingers and cowhands that are L'Amour's specialty. They are quiet, manly, self-assured inidviduals that have the same curse of solving everyone else's problems. An easy read made better by L'Amour's colorful and homespun style.

This is one of my favorite short story collections of Louis L'Amour. Before each chapter, he provides a short tidbit of history about the west. I love them. These tidbits are my favorite parts of all of his short story collections. The short story collections published after he died don't include these and that always disappoints me.

A short story collection, but one of the best ones. Contains "Lonigan," who is one of my favorite L'Amour gunfighter characters.
