Nicole Fox writes smart, sexy mafia romance novels. She is a crazy cat lady in her late 30s with a coffee addiction, an overactive imagination, and a husband who somehow puts up with her impulsive need to keep buying new plants for their house.
Genre wise this is mafia romance and it’s the first book in a duet. Jessa Gilmore is having a bad day after discovering her fiancé cheating with the maid of honour her best friend just hours before their wedding she flees the scene. When a mysterious stranger approaches her whilst she’s licking her wounds and unexpectedly offers her a job cooking aboard his yacht for the day she impulsively accepts and enters a dark criminal world that she has zero experience with and couldn’t have ever imagined or prepared for.
Anton Stepanov is a Bratva Don when he encounters Jessa he feels an immediate attraction which uncharacteristically causes him to then extend his offer. Anton’s agenda is clear a moment out of time with Jessa before he then deposits her back in her safe world with her being none the wiser.
When Jessa witnesses something she shouldn’t by rights it should have been game over but instead, Anton lets her go but not before she takes something for insurance. This gives Anton the excuse he needs to re-enter Jessa’s life he doesn’t really understand why he’s so drawn towards this woman who is not from his world but he’s having so much fun playing this game with her and he’s planning to now eke it out as long as it may last.
I mostly liked this but did find Jessa a bit problematic she’s easily swayed by other's opinions and doesn’t seem to have much sense or even any self-preservation. She makes totally idiotic decisions and confides in complete strangers she hardly knows. She put the life of her friend in danger. She hardly lasted five minutes before she’s spilling her guts to all after saying she’d keep her mouth zipped and considering she’s been threatened by a Bratva don that’s incredibly stupid. Jessa seems to have limited original thoughts allowing others to easily influence and manipulate her.
And can we talk about the instant bestie Freya major red flag how Jesse is not suspicious of her intentions is beyond me the girls practically screaming I’m not who I say I am it’s so bloody obvious and Jessa is totally oblivious. Then there’s her friend Chris encouraging her to dig deeper when it comes to Anton’s deceased wife like HELL TO THE NO!!!! Worst idea ever it’s like asking for a bullet. These dudes are morons.
Anton, I liked better than Jesse he’s your typical mafia anti-hero and I found him quite likeable despite his trigger-happy finger. He’s cold ruthless but also incredibly charming. He’s refreshingly honest about his lack of emotion for his dead wife and doesn’t claim to be anyone's hero. There are definitely secrets to uncover here and I think I’ve worked out the important ones I definitely have some deep suspicions about a couple of individuals which I’ll keep close to my chest until I can see if I’m correct which I’m pretty positive I am.
This was well written and despite my frustrations engaging. I have previously read another duet by this author and this one I definitely preferred. This ends on a cliffhanger finish where predictably Jessa does what she does best and assumes once again believing whatever she’s told this is one gullible girl.
Despite my grumbling, this was a solid read and I will be reading the conclusion as I’m now invested in the outcome. It was just that the heroine also totally irritated and made me internally roll my eyes constantly she’s one of those girls that would totally be the first to get offed in a horror film if you get my gist.
I normally like this author, but couldn't connect with Jessa's character. I have read allot from this genre so my expectations are probably higher than the average reader. I like smart quick thinking heroines who hold their own in this male dominated genre no matter what their age or experience. Women in this genre are often written off as toys, sex objects, broodmares, victims of revenge, abuse, torture, premature death and "things" to be tossed around by the men in these novels until there is a lust or sexual connection.
Basic Overview: Jessa just kept making one bad decision after another. She runs away from her cheating fiancé and wedding to get on a yacht with a stranger who she has unprotected sex with. Too insta-love relationship with Anton who has his own negative history with women, ( an ex-wife) who dies suspiciously after they have an argument and he tells her to leave. Time line seemed off with too much happening in a very short period of time. Unprotected sex between Anton and Jessa = (surprise pregnancy?). Seriously this woman was getting married and wasn't using some kind of birth control? Finally, the ending of this book said it all: Jessa continues to do stupid things w/o thinking anything through. You can't save someone who is incapable of saving themselves. Another damsel in distress who is incapable of making a good decision, even when she is pregnant with a Bratva baby.
I am going to give this author a pass on this series because I know she is a good writer and most of the time a good story teller. For me this is a one and done novel.
I got to about 47% then skip to the last two chapters. And honestly I don't feel like I missed anything. I found Jessa really annoying and way to trusting. Like seriously she barley meets freya and they instantly become best friends and jessa spills all her secrets. Not one of my favorites and I probably won't read the second one.
Jessa catches her fiancé in the act with her bff on her wedding day- no real confrontation so a lot of wasted potential angst. She’s crying on the beach where Bratva pakhan Anton finds her. He offers her a job for the night on his super yacht as a chef. She accepts and he’s hot for her.l in and out of the kitchen. Later she is eavesdropping while returning his jacket— she witnesses him murdering an arms dealer. She freaks out but he decides not to kill her because he’s got the hots for her. Some cat and mouse shenanigans then he makes her become his home chef. Serial eavesdropper Jessa witnesses Anton commit a second murder— then there’s a cliffhanger. I might read the net book… this one had a lot of useless filler— usually thi authors first book is good and the second one sucks. Seems like she’s going for the opposite effect this time so maybe the second book will be good . She should stop writing duets and trim some boring/trivial/mediocre page Fillers from her books and she would have a 5 star read. The stories are good if you have the patience to Wade through the page filler parts.

Just no. Lord the Fmc irritated me so much. I liked her at the beginning then she just went downhill fast. I got to 60% when I just couldn't handle the idiocy anymore. Made me physically feel unwell from her stupidity. I started agreeing with others that she was a toy and should be fudged over. I was going to do like everyone else cause I actually enjoyed Anton but thought he was stupid just for being obsessed with her. Like yea she had her !moments of fiestiness but they weren't bravery they were stupidity. Which we know based off EVERYTHING the woman does throughout the story. Nauseating. I'm not even touching on the Freya issue cause that's honestly a dead horse that I would habe know if i read the reviews before and not halfway through to see if someone agreed with my thoughts since this book seemed to have high reviews... There are but the real reviews are there if you look. Horrid. Was looking forward to the second but if I can't stomach finishing the first the second is out. All well. 🤷🏽♀️ I'm not too disappointed cause it saves me wasted time since I don't expect it to turn out like I'd hope. Good luck to those who force this ish down you'll need it.
Yeah so the 2 stars are for effort and Anton…Jesse was a waste of space..she is the poster child for TSTL….she just was betrayed by her fiancé and BFF…so let’s have a instant friendship with Freya and trust this person…hell Jessa was untrustworthy she blabbed Anton business to everyone…the plot “twist” was seen at very beginning as soon as Freya was introduced…my thoughts are Freya is Marina, she was and still is fucking Yulien, who is the poor neglected second son..the baby she was pregnant with is Yulien’s they planned her “death”…oh and that sickness Jessa has has unprotected sex resulting in pregnancy written all over it. Also just something that has bothered me…Jessa taking Anton’s phone, that was most likely locked and keeping it as insurance was weak…hell my non-tech ass knows that the find my phone feature can track that phone, also most have the option to brick it and transfer the number and data out…unfortunately what irritated me was that Jessa was this amazing confident chef, but she was quite stupid…how can you overcome childhood bullying as well as your childhood to revert to clueless and easy to manipulate so could not relate to the FMC…will not read next….unfortunately filing this author in the do not read again pile
Nicole Fox is one of my favorite mafia authors, but this one just wasn't it for me. The book was almost 450 pages. 1.) Heroine gets cheated on by fiance and leaves her wedding. 2.) Heroine gets on boat and sleeps with hero. 3.) Heroine steals phone and won't give it back after watching hero kill someone. 4.) Heroine works for hero exactly one day. 5.) Hero kills other guy. 6.) Heroine is pregnant with heros baby. The end...in almost 450 pages.

Anton Stepanov and Jessa are born to steal your hearts. This story starts with a wedding tragedy and introduces us to our hero the most handsome, grey-eyed nightmare Anton, the Don of Stepanov Bratva and owner of Medusa, a widower who lives with his brother and right-hand man. Next comes our heroine in a wedding dress, who is a blonde and a chef. The quick chemistry between them led to HOT sex! The rest of the story revolves around them and mafia clans, trust being questioned, dead wife, miscarriage, shootouts, Sex, cooking, boy-best friend, mansions, fashion, and a lot more!! I couldn't take my eyes off for a second, believe me, or not I completed reading this book in one day, the book is not a short one, it's long and elaborated clearly and beautifully written. This is my 1st time reading Nicole Fox's book but I became a quick and die-hard fan of her now!! This story ends in the book 2 Satin princess, so HEA is not guaranteed for now but continue reading Anton and Jessa's love story and I am super excited to read it too just like you all. Grab your Satin Sinner today and now!!.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
When she finds her fiancé having sex with her best friend, Jessa runs! Right onto Anton’s yacht as his chef for the night. But when she sees something she definitely shouldn’t have seen he knows he can’t k!ll her, so he offers her a job- after destroying her current one. She learns stuff about his past that really has her questioning him. She’s also getting told stuff by her “friends”, which I’m still unsure about, and instead of thinking for herself she’s letting others control her thoughts. Book 1 ends on a cliffhanger with her running after having a huge surprise dropped on her. I’m seriously questioning everyone, her best friend, new neighbor- who suspiciously knows her whereabouts all the time, even Aton’s brother I’m wondering about. Starting book 2 now! I need answers and need to know who’s really out to get them!
Ugh this just made me want to throw my phone. This book pulls you in instantly and doesn't let go but I hate cliffhangers. Okay okay okay aside from the fact that this book lives me wanting more and just flipping ends it was amazing. I have my theories about M and was hoping that I would find out if I was reading between the lines the correct way. I loved both the man characters and my trust issues were high when every other character was brought it. The author did a great job writing this j just wish it was listed as part 1 instead of book 1 to give me a heads up.
Quickie review for the duet: I am not going to lie, the first book was just not doing it for me. It was so dang slow I almost wondered if I should even bother with the second one. It didn’t help that the “twists” were also predictable that I guessed the them well before they were revealed. I know not everyone reads the same book, and hope it turns out to be a great read for you. But for me, it just didn’t hit the spot. This definitely is not stopping me from reading Fox’s other books as I always loved them in the past. Just happens this is just one that wasn’t for me. 4 Stars because the idea as a whole, did in fact, keep me reading.
This is the first book in a duet of reads and oh what a tempting and tantalizing tale begins to unfold. A smartly constructed and sinfully seductive combination of raw drama, intense emotion, taut tension, scorching heat, nail-biting suspense and jaw-on-the-floor twists pull you in and under and in the end leave you breathless and viciously craving the conclusion to Anton and Jessa's story. This is my frank and freely posted review.
did I read 440 pages in 6 hours and finish reading at 2am? yes. 2.5 stars i think I will like the 2nd book more I’m suspicious of freya I think she is gonna be a plot twist
J’ai bien aimé Anton mais Jessa m’a soûlé. Elle est naïve, raconte toute sa vie à une inconnue et laisse t Chris lui dicter sa vie. J’espère qu’elle s’affirmera + dans les prochains tomes.
Jessa would not listen to her heart. The signals were there when it cane to her finance. Instead, she saw the truth on her wedding day. She met Anton at a bad time in her life. Her mistake, taking something from him that was not her property. That's, when the games began. Anton treated her as a toy when he had time to play.
This read like a bad experience in college. She was one inexperience intelligent woman. Her best friend, Craig, supported her even when she treated him badly. I hope there is a reason for the quick relationship she establihed with her neighbor.
Really enjoying this book until Jessa strikes up friendship with Freya , is immediately best friends and confides in her after a few hours. Not into women who ask questions about my intimate personal life to begin with. How is his kiss, size of phallus, great in bed? Get your own man, this is personal. Jessa talks too much. She's tells Chris and Freya everything about Anton the brat a don. I think she has a death wish. Anton is the man, the bratva don who takes care of business and a true alpha. Book ends with Jessa making another stupid decision not to confide in Anton about videos from unknown number on her phone. She instead calls Chris to pick her up knowing she is pregnant with a brave heir. Can't wait to see what happens though I have some ideas.
Usually I can finished books within a day or two but this was a struggle.
Jessa’s back and forth got tiring very quickly. The blurb is a little miss leading. If there is mention of pregnancy in the blurb I expected it to happen quicker in the book. Not in the last couple of pages and then a cliffhanger. Could not connect with Jessa at all and her relationship with her friends was tiring.
From the blurb I really thought I’d read this already- bride ditched after discovering the fiancée & maid of honour, but it turns out I’ve just read waaaaaay too many romance novels
It took me while to get into it- maybe I’ve reached peak mafia reads?- but I enjoyed it enough to follow through to the second book in the series Satin Princess Sometimes I curse my stubborn nature.
I did find Jessa a bit frustrating- her total lack of any sense & need to defer to others for every decision was a bit annoying BUT I do respect that she’s basically just down for a good dicking happy to rebound so soon after walking out on her wedding. Maybe that’s why her character is a bit disappointing. On one hand she’s tough & full of banter & on the other she’s a wet blanket who can’t make any decisions. Also can we stop being surprised when unprotected sex creates babies. Did we all skip sex education or something?!?!
I liked that the story took a few detours from the regular mafia romance by throwing in the dead ex-wife angle but have to say the “platonic best friend who’s really in love with you” just isn’t my jam & Christopher started to give me a headache. There’s plenty of twists & turns but nothing that you can’t really see signposted a mile off. STILL we all know why we read these books & it ain’t for groundbreaking plot devices.
The chemistry is good, but I feel like I’ve seen Anton a few too many other times in other books. Maybe it’s time to step away from the Mister Mafia style for a while (sob)
Overall I’d give it a series rating of a solid 3.5- its a low calorie version of the steamy sauce pot you want to be reading.
(Side eye). I'm sorry but, seriously? I think at this point she should have just stayed with her ex. Spoilers. This Women is beyond slow, she's a complete and utter idiot. She is told what kinda man he is by his staff. That he is pretty much in the mob, and she's like, no way, he was so sweet! We shared a moment. No way is he a bad guy, I've only talked to him for 30 mins and I know him more then the ppl who have worked for him for years. Again "side eye". She doesn't so more dumb stuff and sees stuff she shouldn't, she is let go, yet for insurance steals from said mobster. Face palm! No goes the cat and mouse of ridiculous. Anywho, this guy is just straight up cruel and our girl somehow just hates it yet can't help but like him. Barf. When he took away her job and source of income I was so over him personally. And then to add insults to injury, explains she will either work for him or be cut off from working anywhere in the word under her loved Profession? I wanted him dead! How dare this p.o.s. bit no, his cruelty knows no end. He then likes to humiliate her further once she excepts the job. And she intern does what he says and gets on her knees To welcome more humiliation. Add this point in all honesty I would have stayed with the crappy ex and my best friend then go through all of this. This book made H look like a total doormat, submissive loser. And I hated her for it
So far the book was okay…the story is predictable. In fact, I don’t even need to read the second book because I already know what’s going to happen. It’s the new girl friend and the brother🤷🏻♀️ my prediction we’ll see. If I’m right I’m gonna be pissed 🤣
