I loved this series. The art is gorgeous and the plot kept me interested until the very end. And Adam is so funny 🤭🤭. Tsuta Suzuki is an author to keep an eye for.
5⭐️ - Fantastic end to the series! We had to wait so long for the english release but it was so sweet and lovely. I wish some side characters had a little more focus at the end over revealing the Queen of Xehana but at the same time it was interesting to finally see what drove Adam out of his country. Succinct series with lots of great political intrigue.
Still can't say some of the plot threads made complete sense to me, and I had to spend about 10 minutes staring at the castle wall panels to figure out how you can shove someone forward off a wall and then fly really far backwards and into a snowbank. But that's fine. I'm very much cool with slightly unrealistic happy endings. Even if some of the politics and religious stuff are still pretty handwavey. (I don't get the king's ribbons at all. Why is that a thing. Why did we spend several pages talking about it again in connection to the betrayals.)
After reading a less-than-great manga a short time earlier, I do have to say it's fantastic to spend time with a final volume that works hard on its pacing to ensure a satisfying payoff. This series packs a lot into four volumes, but it does it well, with a really nice balance between overall plot and intense character development.
I couldn't be more shocked by how much I wound up loving Adam. The only person more surprised, I think, would be Joel, who finally faces his true feelings and (mostly) unleashes Adam's heavily suppressed affections. He still can't quite handle the full force of Adam's love, but he's doing his best to communicate his needs while also allowing Adam more of what he needs. Like unlimited cuddling, some actual time off to vacation together, a room next to his, a permanent place by his side...
I knew Adam wouldn't die immediately after being captured, but the imprisonment scenes were so, so good. As Leonel says, it's often hard to tell if Adam's being flippant or if he's genuinely insane. It's nearly impossible to torture him for a while because he treats everything like a grand old joke: he waxes eloquent about his love for Joel and flatly refuses to give them any "confession" material they can run with to track down and rearrest him.
The problem is that they've already figured out both Adam's and Joel's weak spot: it's each other.
Once Adam hears their plans to use his execution to lure Joel out of hiding, he spends the rest of his imprisonment actively trying to kill himself before they can use him as a weapon. The angst is really, really good, and you can feel how much Adam genuinely loves Joel. He is quite literally willing to die for him, and doing his best to do exactly that because he thinks it's the only way to save Joel's life.
And the only reason he feels like he has to go that far? Because he knows beyond a shadow of a doubt that Joel will come to save him, even knowing it's a trap. While their love has seemed heavily one-sided for quite a while, Adam knows Joel cares for him and will do anything for him, too.
It's just so good. I am so shocked by how much I adore their relationship. And flighty, promiscuous, loves everyone but cares for no one Adam...he's the most gentle, loyal, patient lover. He tunes into Joel's unspoken emotions and reassures him that he'll never hurt him, he'll never leave him, he'll never do anything Joel doesn't want. And Joel, in turn, finally starts telling Adam that he doesn't want him to leave. He wants him there, always.
I kind of saw Adam's parentage reveal coming, but it's interesting to find out that so much of Adam's man-whoring ways were an active defense against getting dragged back into a situation and a kingdom that he didn't want. He's been a smart, thoughtful, caring, forward-thinking man all along...meeting Joel didn't actually change him. It just gave him happiness and a different place to belong.
Also very happy that we got some decent time with Luis and Gil. Their relationship dynamic is still very different from our main couple's, but they use their time in bed to communicate their true feelings and commit to one another, too.
Their love isn't nearly as selfless as Adam's and Joel's: Luis was taking a chance with Gil's life in order to save his own, but he did aim the best he could to give him a chance. And was devastated, in his own way, by the realization that he might have miscalculated, when it seemed that Gil really had died at his hand.
Luis is a major tsundere, and Gil is heavily traumatized and very much afraid of losing anyone else he cares about, so it makes sense that neither of them can be as free with their emotions. But they're trying.
Really loved this series. Wouldn't mind reading more by Suzuki, if they write more in this kind of genre.
The story wraps up fairly quickly. The last volume ended with everyone seeming to be about to die and Simon had the upper hand.
We start with Adam being interrogated and he’s his usual Adam self to the end. He’s fun to watch be shameless. Joel is busy getting all his ducks in a row as well.
There is a thrilling end game between our characters. Simon seems to have the upper hand. As one imagines, things twist and turn and you need to read it to see how it turns out they defeat Simon
We get to see Joel finally admit that he likes Adam and we finally get a real kiss. All of our stories are wrapped up real nice. We meet Adam’s mom and she is a real piece of work.
It was a good story and I was a little unaffected by it. I don’t know. It was well done, but it didn’t hit emotionally. I’m glad I read this. it’s a unique story for Japanese Manga about a Western historical story.
I think the entire time I read through vol.4, I just screamed about how much I love Joel and Adam. lol Anyway, Barbarities was a really delightful series I'm really glad I sat down to read. I loved every bit of the ride the series took me on. I hope in the future I can see more folks read it, and more scream about all the couples the way I did. [And yes, there were times I was even kicking my feet while doing so.]
as rushed as the ending was I still really enjoyed this series !! I love renaissance inspired works and the art was so pretty, it fit perfectly with the story. I was more into the side couple than the main couple (which is partially why I has finished the series…) but the romance was still fun to see bloom. THIS IS A SLOW BURNN so if you don’t like that I really wouldn’t recommend.
