Possessing Morgan

Rate this book
New York City, in the height of summer. Crime seems to have taken a holiday, and Detective Morgan O'Callaghan is bored, bored, bored. Paperwork is mating and multiplying on her desk, and even a jaywalker is starting to look good. Anything to get her out from behind her desk Enter Andrea Worthington, Charleston socialite and all-around rich girl, right down to the wealthy fianc. She's also the new Assistant District Attorney assigned to Morgan's precinct. Their first meeting is like two freight trains crashing head on. Then a high profile, career make-or-break murder case throws them together again. The investigation has barely begun when Andrea becomes the target of a nearly fatal hit-and-run. But was it really aimed at her? Can she and Morgan find the common ground they need to solve the case and stop the attacks, or are the gaps just too wide to bridge?

From the author's website: I was born in Sydney, Australia, in 1956 where I grew up and have lived all my life. I graduated high school, attended a business college and have been either a typist or secretary for all my working life, taking a seven year break 1987 to 1994 while my kids grew from babies to school kids. Venturing once again out into the workforce, I have spent the last 16 years working for a psychiatrist which, in my opinion, gave me a lot of insight into my own mental state. I hadn't really considered taking up writing until 5 years ago, when I was encouraged by friends in an online chatroom to try my hand at writing some short stories. I practiced my skills with online fan fiction, primarily Xena fan fiction, leading to an opportunity to submit a manuscript to Blue Feather Books at the end of 2007. And the rest, they say, is history.

I took a shot on this book as you do with an audible credit and I was pleasantly surprised. A new to me author and narrator, plus a GCLS award winner in 2010.
A good mystery/thriller with a lot of action.

Hmmm

The regular formula of a cop story was employed in Possessing Morgan. Morgan, the detective and Andrea the District Attorney not having the best start of being acquainted. The matter that makes their story different would be Morgan’s cute aloof persona and a soft insecure true self. Andrea’s high society family with an overbearing and manipulative mother overextending her motherly grasp into Andrea’s life to the point of an arranged marriage to fit the high society bill. The high profile case surrounding the story was also an added ingredient plus the hostile coworker who seem to have a vendetta against Morgan’s questioned sexuality.

It was quite a long story with a lot convoluted dialogue and pit stops. It was an ok read.

I wasn't expecting much when I got hold of this book but I am surprisingly glad by it. I do kind of feel Morgan quick judgement of Andrea before she ever allowed herself to know her is the same treatment Morelli and his cronies gave her. Also in the romantic department I believe Morgan is quite dunce :)

The writer made good effort supplying intrigues and character relationships that captivated and related with readers. Some characters and plot weren't so developed though like that of Brennan, Arthur and Chelsea but if for instance this book were to have a sequel I think the author can make up for that.

Entertaining and engaging but not one that requires a lot of effort. Andrea Worthington, comes from a wealthy family and has moved from Charlotte NC to NYC to be the new ADA, in part because of the job, but also to escape her overbearing mother and family expectations. Andrea and Detective Morgan O’Callaghan are thrown together during the investigation of a high profile murder that isn’t quite as straightforward as it might seem. Things get complicated as Morgan and Andrea’s relationship grows and then is further complicated by an attempt on Andrea’s life.
This is definitely a good beach book. I’m sure I could find things about this book that I didn’t like, but the reality is it was an enjoyable easy read and for what I was looking for this weekend. That was enough.

Good effort, but it fell short for me. For a police procedural, it wasn't bad, but the conclusion wasn't really satisfying. Too many questions unanswered. What happened with her collegue? What was the deal with the father of the suspect?

The romance was a bit flat too. The main characters (who reminded me of Alex and CJ) were likeable enough, but there never was any real chemistry.

What annoyed the hell out of me, were the conversations between Morgan and Henry. They're supposed to be partners and friends, but if I were Morgan, I would've kicked Henry's butt all over the place. His questions weren't from concern, he was just plain intrusive. In most of their conversations, which involve endless strings of 3 word sentences, I was getting to the point of "ffs, get on with it".
