really 3.5 stars, I think.

Lots of good info about lesser known players in the 16th century European Reformation. Full of enlightening quotes, interesting historical tidbits, and fun character sketches of these women.

واصطف الكرادلة كأعداء .. في اوشحة سوداء .. في صف ملتحم .. وشغف في العيون مزدحم .. امام صليب خشبي عليه وحل وشوك .. تحتضنه امرأة عارية بلا شوق .. كنت أقف على رابية بعيدة .. بعيدة عنه .. قريب منها .. جاست عيني فيها وفتشت تحنيات جلدها .. ومداخل ومخارج جسدها .. أمضيت برهة انظر في وجل .. إلى حيث يتلذذ الآخرين إليها بالنظر .. فلم تكن قد اتيحت لي فرصة النظر الي أعضاء امرأة كاملة النضج قبل ذلك .. بلا حجاب .. كنت مأخوذا بهول الموقف عن محاولة الاستمناء كما كان يفعل اسكافي حارتنا .. البعض يرشقها بما تطوله يده من طعام أو حجارة .. والبعض يستمني ويلتذ .. لكن كان أغلب النساء يصرخن .. عاهرة .. اما انا فكنت افكر في عار التعري .. وكيف انهم ليعذبوها قد قرروا أن ينزعوا عنها قطعة قماش .. تكديرا وتعريضا ..

وبينما أنا في غمرة التفكير .. ظهر القس الأكبر من خلفهم فكأنه اطول منهم .. رغم أنه اقصرهم .. فبدا وكأنه يقف على خشبة مدرجة .. صعدها فانبلق لون بياض جبته .. وطغى على سواد الكرادلة .. كان في ذلك دراما في نفوس الحاضرين .. وكأن ملاكا من السماء نزل .. رفع صولجانه إلى السماء ورسم صليبا في الهواء .. فامتلأت صدورنا بأنفاس الهواء الذي تقدس .. وغمرت أجسادنا رعشة التجسد .. واشتد اهتزازها عندما صرخ ناطق الحكم قائلا .. باسم يسوع .. رأينا تلك الرعشة على اذرعنا بثور مقشعرة .. واحسسنا بجذورها في دواخلنا الموغلة .. نطق ناطق الحكم بالحكم .. وأعلن الحيثية والتبرير .. أقصاها للموت بلا تعزير! .. كان الحكم قاسيا .. ولم يكن لها فيه مواسيا .. الا قلبي الخفقان عليها .. كان الحكم يقول على لسان ناطقه .. "تموت بالتعريض .. للهواء والشمس .. واعين الناس .. تموت في ليلة .. في يوم .. في شهر .. في سنة .. في سنين .. تموت .. ولا يرحمها الا يسوع .. يرفعها ان استطاع .. يكسيها ان اراد .. ها قد خلينا بينها وبينه .. فلا حائل بينهما .. واخرجنا أنفسنا من علاقتهما .. كما أراد الهرطوقي هوس والملحد ويكلف .. قد حكمنا عليها بمذهب لوثر كما كانت تدعو .. فليرحمها الرب أن شاء .. ولتنقذ نفسها ان استطاعت"

Although the author's contemprary femist perspective conditions how she reads these women of the Reformation, this book makes a good contribution to that history. I especially appreciated the second part of the book where the author presents specific women. Most of them were women of privilege which certainly was a factor in their individual contributionm, but all of theires lives are worthy of consideration. Just the bibliographic references alone at the end of each study are valuable for readers who are interested in Reformation women. They provide a lot of direction for future study.

I loved this book. Easily read (if a bit repetitive at times) and stuffed with information about all of these amazingly interesting women, most I had never heard of! Particular highlights were Marie Dentiere, Olimpia Morata and Katharine Schutz Zell.

A fascinating look at the influential women of the Reformation. Read selected chapters for a class for school and did not finish entire book.
