As the final months of 1945 bring a feeling of hope, Rhoda Harding, married to Alec for over twenty-five years, is reluctant to settle into premature middle-age. Through her new friend Jenny Matherson, Rhoda meets the enigmatic Silas, who encourages her to take employment in the nearby village of Oakleigh.
