This book is gorgeous and filled with so many lovely pictures of cake. I don’t bake cake often, because the lovely wife is not very big on sweets, so I would pretty much eat the whole thing myself for a week. I’d be happy, but I really don’t need to eat whole cakes. There’s an excellent cross-section of styles that dives right into the cakes. At the end, there’s an excellent guide on a number of techniques for cake baking and decorating.

So while spending a lot of time home during the 2020 lost year and cooking at home a lot, we decided it was time to review what cookbooks were on the shelves. It was time to see if there was something we wanted to make out of these books, or if they were unjustly taking up space and energy from better books. If we couldn’t see ourselves using the books, then we determined whether or not we would want to pass these along to someone who might. Considering the danger this book puts me in, this gets passed along to others who can give this the love it deserves.

Nate picked this book up at the Library. Generally, it is not one I would have gravitated to as the recipes seem fussy requiring ingredients to be brought to room temperature ahead of time and very specific instructions such as, "add the dry ingredients in 3 additions alternately with the milk in 2 additions". I am more of a dump it all in at once, whip it up a bit with an electric hand mixer & throw it in the oven type of cake baker. Usually works a treat & the rich frosting covers up any cracks or blemishes! Anyhow, Nate proceeded to make the "Caramelized Pear Upside-Down Gingerbread" following the step by step instructions. It was delicious! I am not particularly fond of gingerbread cake but the was amazingly moist & tasty!

My turn next, I have chosen to try the "Spice Cake with Golden Raisins" as I could not believe my eyes when I read coriander, allspice & cayenne pepper in the ingredient list! Can cake including those spices really taste good?!

Update: Yes, it really can taste good! The spices delight rather than overwhelm the senses & the honey glaze is a great match! However, due to the chewiness of the honey glaze & the softness of the fluffy cake it was a devil to serve! We ended up with a pile of cake pieces & lumps of glaze which we ate with ice-cream. It was delicious :)

You wouldn't find any showstoppers in this cookbook but I've only made the date-walnut loaf from this book so far, and it was great! I was really doubtful since the recipe had only 3 tablespoons of butter, but it was delicious and moist and it was quickly devoured. Best of all? It was easy. I'll definitely try more cakes from it, especially since they are simple enough to make quite frequently for my family.
