Imagine: the first Star Wars book that actually moves, bringing to life the most memorable scenes from the epic: Obi-Wan battles Darth Maul The Millennium Falcon zooms away from an exploding Death Star Luke rides a galloping Tauntaun, Yoda twirls his green lightsaber, Boba Fett blasts up, up and away! And of course the most memorable scene of all—red and blue lightsabers flashing, Luke and Darth Vader fight the ultimate battle between good and evil.
It’s a marriage made in a galaxy far, far away: phenomenal Scanimation meets Star Wars, the enduring epic that’s sold $42 billion in ticket sales and earned the title #1 Boys Action Toy License of all time. Created by Rufus Butler Seder, Star Wars: A Scanimation Book presents 12 of the most memorable scenes, in a landscape, i.e., movie format. It’s an homage from an artist obsessed with the earliest forms of capturing visual motion to an artist obsessed with the most advanced. But that’s not what young fans will care about—this is having pure movie magic in the palm of your hand, to replay again and again.
this granted me a fun 15 minutes but it could've done a lot more. best suited for kids and completionists. and shoutout to my friend who gifted this to me!
I love Star Wars. And despite everything George Lucas has done to demolish my childhood love of that original trilogy of movies, I can't help but still love it. My sons have that same love, and although their love is nonjudgmental enough to include Jar Jar Binks and computer generated effects, I recognize that love as the same.
I saw the Scanimation book Star Wars: 11 Iconic Scenes from a Galaxy Far, Far Away in a bookstore on vacation earlier this summer, and picked it up. It was initially as a gift for my six year old son, but everyone in the family has enjoyed it since then.
Scanimation is a process copyrighted by Rufus Butler Seder, the author of the book. Each two-page spread in the small hardcover book includes a scene from the Star Wars series of movies, in a cartoony style. Each picture is then animated with the Scanimation process, so that when you turn the page, the scene is animated in a loop. Don't ask me to explain how it works, but the scenes are animated.
The eleven scenes are chronological, starting with a scene from Episode I: The Phantom Menace, and continuing through all six films, ending with Episode VI: Return of the Jedi. My favorite Star Wars movie, The Empire Strikes Back gets four scenes--the most from any of the movies. So you have Luke Skywalker on a Tauntaun, galloping across the frozen wastes of Hoth; Snowspeeders entangling the legs of Imperial AT-AT Walkers; Luke and Darth Vader dueling with lightsabers. On the opposite page from each picture is a quote from the movie, and a caption of the picture.
There's a limited number of times you can "read" this book before it gets repetitive, but it's still a nice little gift for the Star Wars geek in your life. The Scanimation is gimmicky but fascinating, and we've enjoyed the book for what it is.
I originally was going to give this book three stars, but had to move it down. I was so disappointed by this book. I love the scanimation pictures in the other books, especially the Gallope and Waddle. But, the pictures in this book weren't as clear. Some of the choices of scenes to include in the book weren't that great either. The best two were Luke and Vader and the one with Darth Maul. There was a little text on the opposite page, but it wasn't that spectacular either. Each one had a quotation centered, and then said which movie the scene was from beneath. I really don't think this book should have been with the board books either, because I don't think kids of board book age would appreciate it.
I happened upon this little book in my local B&N and decided if I could find it on sale somewhere I would pick it up (since I am a Star Wars fan). Luckily I was able to find the book for half price. After flipping through this I am glad I did, because about only half the book was worth the price I paid. The two scenes from The Empire Strikes Back are by the best of the lot, followed closely by the last which is the Millennium Falcon escaping from an exploding Death Star (Return of the Jedi) and after that would be Yoda. The rest of the scenes aren't a BIG disappointment, but could have been clearer. Also there are quotes from the movies for each scene as well as a description of the scene itself.
Super cool book. Sedar actually brings eleven famous scenes from all six Star Wars movies to life! While the graphics are super cool, I found the quotes from the depicted scenes to be the highlight of the book.
I recieved this one for christmas a long time back and its a brief fun little book. The scenes look really cool and i like the quotes on the opposite page. I feel like it would've been even better with some added descriptions of the scene on the side but its still a nice addition to any Star wars fans collection.
Granted, it’s incredibly short and more of a “picture” book, this thing blew me away when I was a kid! All my favorite Star Wars moments slapped onto a page that somehow moved. Iconic quotes, and super cool “animation.”
Fun Star Wars book that brings various scenes from the saga to life. This book would make a great gift for any Star Wars fan. If you’re not a Star Wars fan, you probably won’t be that interested.
I got this for Christmas, and it was fun. It's the first scanimation book I've ever seen, and I didn't even know that was a thing before getting this. I see from other reviews it's not as good as other scanimation books, but this one is getting a lot of stars since I have no common frame of reference.
Basically when you open the book or turn a page, physics causes something in the page to the right to pull out of it (like some pop-up books), and you can watch action on that page. The page on the left has a quote from the corresponding movie and a sentence describing the scene. I was treated to Darth Vader and Luke going at each other with their light sabers, bam, bam, bam! Same with Darth Maul and Qui Gon, and Yoda flipping around with his own saber, and Jango Fett flying off, and the Millennium Falcon escaping the exploding second Death Star, and some other scenes, and my favorite: a snowspeeder wrapping its tow cable around an AT-AT.
That one's my fave due to an old memory. It's been several years since I've played it, but I've never lost at Star Wars Trivial Pursuit, though one of my cousins gives me a run for my money. And it's not exactly fair. Everyone else is allowed to be just close with their answers, but mine must be properly pronounced and sometimes spelled correctly. And I still win in spite of the handicaps!
Well, I can't argue with that. Anyway, the one cousin isn't given as much leeway as the others, but he still gets more than I. One time a long time ago in this family room right's chea where I'm typing this out, and before everyone had cellphones let alone smartphones, he was given the question "What did the snowspeeders use to bring down the AT-AT's in The Empire Strikes Back?" He suddenly came down with a bad case of tip-of-the-tongue, and "that wire fired from a harpoon gun on the back of the Snowspeeder" wasn't going to fly, at least not for him. He also had to go to the bathroom, and when he returned he came back with the answer which is, of course, tow cable. At that moment a new rule was instated: no bathroom breaks between the asking of the question and the providing of the answer.
That particular game has since become family lore and a running joke for those of us who were playing it. If the cousin in question ever finds himself on the losing end of a Star Wars discussion, he will say "I got two words for ya: tow cable," and that's the end of it all.
This was a fun book, but it's most fun when someone else buys it for you. Otherwise, just read it in the bookstore.
This could my favorite book i have discovered so far. Star Wars: A Scanimation Book: Iconic Scenes from a Galaxy Far, Far Away... by Rufus Butler Seder is a book with 11 of some of the most memorable scenes from the two star wars trilogies. The Book itself is close to square and is very thick as the pages are made up what feels like a card board. As we open the book each page on the The book consists of moving images on the right side of the page break and on the left side we have the memorial quote that coincides with the scene on the right. Some of the best scenes are relived in this interactive book such as Luke and Leigh swinging, Darth Vadar and Luke in Light Saber fight, and even the awesome AT ATs featured in the Empire Strikes Back.
The books outer cover is silver or metallic which gives it that futuristic feel. AS we turn the page we are triggering the motion in each picture so we can swing the pictures back and forth. You wont really get much out of this book but it is a great book to relive the best scenes of the movie.
Each scanimation page has a classic Star Wars scene that appears to come to life as the reader turns the page. On each facing page there is a quote from that scene or from a major character or a description of the scene, the characters involved, and which film. This book is amazing considering the way the pages come to life simply by turning the pages. I think this would be especially amazing for kids to see pieces form a classic film series in the new and innovative way. It relies heavily upon the visual, the quotes and descriptions feel like an afterthought. A disadvantage is that the book is relatively fragile because if it got ripped or torn in the wrong place the scanimation will not work.
“Star Wars: A Scanimation Book: Iconic Scenes from a Galaxy Far, Far Away...” by Rufus Butler Seder. - - “We seem to be made to suffer. It's our lot in life.” - C3PO (from Star Wars Episode IV)
“Hey, steady, girl. What's the matter? You smell something?” - Luke Skywalker
I really like these types of books. Plues I am a Star Wars junky. The scanimation is a big favorite of mine, but the books themselves tend not to last too long, very fragile things in general. Still a big hit while they last!
Oooh! Shiny! I love the moving pictures -- and the shiny silver cover! I love the novelty. Fans will love it. Others (non-fans) will roll their eyes and move on (the book wasn't made for them, any how...) Did I mention how shiny the cover is?....
Pictures aren't as clear as they could be, if you own Gallop! or Swing! you may be disappointed. I wouldn't say it's the 11 MOST iconic scenes from the Star Wars universe... but definitely a cute add for a young Star Wars fan!
