If this confused me, particularly the odd illustration angles, just imagine Parker. Would’ve been a DNF, but, there’s not a ton of pages, so we bull-dosed through.
I received Big Rig Bugs through the Goodreads "First Reads" program.
The artwork in this book is incredible! Seeing as how no one else is mentioned as being the illustrator, I assume that Kurt Cyrus pulled double duty for this book, and I have rarely observed the work of a picture book artist with greater skill than that shown by him in Big Rig Bugs. In truth, I think that we may be looking at the 2011 Caldecott Medal winner, here.
The story is about a cleanup brigade of bugs that works together to tow away a tuna fish sandwich that is carelessly thrown onto the ground by the operator of a large construction machine. Each bug does its part, and before long the offending morsel is removed to elsewhere. All the while, we as the reader are treated to a collage of these happenings that will have readers of any age marveling at the luminous illustrations.
I would probably give one and a half stars to this book.
What? This book illustrates the strength some insects and bugs have. A human litters by throwing his tuna fish sandwich in the field where the creepy crawly's come out of hiding to clean up the mess. The author portrays each insect with a particular duty. The millipede leads, the cricket clears the way, ants lift, sort, and sift, the beetle moves the mess, the pickle worm packs it tight, and the dragonfly hoist it away.
So What? Children can see how some insects can work together to accomplish some pretty big jobs.
Now What? This book can be used to illustrate to students that little creatures can accomplish big tasks. Students should persevere and never give up on improving themselves or the community because if tiny, creepy, crawly bugs have the strength to accomplish big things, then so does everyone else.
Action packed and full of color, Big Rig Bugs is an enjoyable short read for all. It includes an array of busy bugs doing various interesting jobs. The bugs are compared to different pieces of machinery found at a construction site as they hurry to clean up a discarded sandwich from a careless construction worker. Big Rig Bugs is written with catchy rhyming words, "Clear that thicket, dozer cricket!" that can spark a whole English lesson on its own.
*An activity with this book could include an activity about rhyming. Children could color and cut out various bug shapes with pre-printed words on them (one simple word per bug cut-out) and then you could have them hold up the correct bug cut out with the word that rhymes with a word that the teacher calls out. If the kids are old enough it could even be a friendly race.
Cyrus, K. (2010). Big rig bugs. New York: Walker & Co..
Great concept, beautiful colors and illustrations, but confusing to a 3 year old. My son thought that these bugs were enormous and I tried to explain that they are much smaller in person. That was not received on his end as well as it could have been. Would be better for a little big older kids. Very creative and liked the rhythm of the words.
Big Rig Bugs is a wonderful children's book and will educate and entertain the youngest readers. The illustrations are amazingly vibrant and tie the machines in with the bugs. The rhyming phrases are fun and easy for little ones. This book is a keeper and is sure to be read over and over again.
Perfect for a read-aloud. The kids get so excited when they realize this is a rhyming book. There are plenty of eye-catching illustrations on each page and the kids loved finding different construction equipment that were similar to each bug represented.
A fun conceit though sometimes pushed a bit, combining the idea of construction equipment with bugs is a sure sell with certain small readers. I believe we read it with my son when he was 3 and a half.
My 4yr old son luvs bugs, big trucks n bugs, and most of all books.. This is something he wuld crawl n2 bed with every night 4 many nights to come if I culd get it 4 him!!
"See you later, excavator!" Adorable book where bugs become like construction equipment, hauling and pulling food/trash remnants. I could see little ones loving this one!
The illustrations in this book are wonderful. My kids pored over the details of every page. It was a good choice for teaching my kindergartener to read- plenty of easy words for her to sound out.
This 2010 book has wonderful pictures. It is a poetry book, told all in verse. The students will love this book with it's vibrant pictures and easy to follow story.
