I've read a few RPG rule books in my lifetime, but I've rarely read one that is as in-depth and unashamedly complex as this one. I used to have the old Champions book back in the '80s, but this edition reminded me more of GURPS at the first glance. In some ways it's similar, but while GURPS gives you plenty of options to approximate any imaginable character closely, Hero System goes a step further and gives you tools to tweak every power exactly how you need it. While some rule books give you 6-7 powers per page, this book sometimes takes 6-7 pages to describe the ins and outs of a single power. I guess this RPG might initially be a bit overwhelming for novice players and GMs, although the book goes to great lengths to answer every question imaginable, but more experienced folks with a lot of time on their hands should get multiple nerdgasms just by reading this book.
