Het huwelijk van Heleen en Frank is wat sleets geworden. Kinderen zijn er nooit gekomen - hoewel Heleen dat graag had gewild - en Frank is als touroperator bijna altijd van huis. Onverwacht komt hij op een dag eerder thuis en verrast haar met een romantische reis: een cruise ter ere van hun jubileum. De reis is geweldig: Heleen voelt de liefde tussen haar en Frank weer helemaal opbloeien. Na een paar dagen aan boord wordt ze wakker en is de plek in bed naast haar leeg. De paniek slaat toe als ze Frank niet kan vinden. Een paar dagen later wordt hij officieel vermist. Gebroken keert ze terug naar Nederland. Maanden gaan voorbij totdat twee verzekeringsmaatschappijen contact met haar opnemen en ze erachter komt dat Frank een dubbelleven leidde. Ze zet alles op alles om achter de waarheid te komen. Suzanne Vermeer is het pseudoniem van de in juni 2011 overleden auteur Paul Goeken. In 2002 debuteerde hij met zijn eerste thriller onder zijn eigen naam. Na vier titels ontstond het idee om daarnaast andere boeken onder pseudoniem uit te brengen. All-inclusive (2006) was het eerste boek op naam van Suzanne Vermeer en werd meteen een bestseller. Ook voor de volgende boeken waren de reisbranche en het toerisme het uitgangspunt en inmiddels is dat het unieke handelsmerk geworden voor deze ijzersterke vakantiethrillers.

Alle titels (All inclusive, De vlucht, Zomertijd, Cruise, Après-ski, De suite, Zwarte piste en Bella Italia ) zijn in de bestsellerlijst verschenen. De zomerthriller Cruise (2009) werd genomineerd voor de NS Publieksprijs 2010. Noorderlicht (verschijning januari 2012) is het laatste Suzanne Vermeer-boek dat Paul Goeken geschreven heeft.

Ik vond het zo saai dat ik ervan in slaap viel. na toch nog wat verder te gaan werd het nog niet veel beter.. Jammer!

Again I caught myself rooting for the bad guy, simply because I didn't feel any connection with or sympathy for the MC. Furthermore it took forever for something to actually happen. Again I felt Vermeer should be writing drama, not suspense thrillers. Like another reviewer has stated: it is more about the repetitive self-questioning, contemplations and insecurities, eventually leading to reader annoyance. At the end I suppose an "unexpected twist" was intended, but to me there was nothing unexpected about it and it didn't add to the story at all imo.
Like Zomertijd this book is better than All-inclusive but not much. Therefore again 1.5 stars but rounded up to 2.

Again the book was narrated by Charlotte Lap which doesn't help with the suspense. It did help me fall asleep faster (1 ster).

2.0 out of 5 stars - Predictable and full of stereotypes and cliches, this translation falls short of being a suspense thriller. Though there are many contrived and unbelievable action scenes, the protagonist spends a lot of time with her own repetitive rhetorical self-questioning and angsting which leads to reader annoyance.

Helen and Frank are on a 15th anniversary luxury cruise when he disappears. Helen is bereft and heartbroken. Despite an exhaustive search, authorities are unable to find Helen's missing husband and he is presumed dead. Through Frank's company attorney, Helen learns that Frank has led a double life and the shocking discoveries keep coming. Helen, naturally, goes off to investigate these developments on her own and gets herself into some unbelievable predicaments and peril. The conclusion is completely pat and unsatisfying.

This is one to miss -- way too much "telling" in the writing and though it was a quick read (I read it over a couple of hours), I found myself just wanting to finish and be done with all the characters and the lame plot.

Het was een oké boek, maar ik ben er vooral doorheen gevlogen omdat ik ernaar heb geluisterd. Het lag voorbij vooral in de lijn der verwachting. Weer heel uitgebreide omschrijvingen van dingen die er niet toe doen, terwijl ‘belangrijke’ dingen kort worden beschreven en hier en daar worden afgeraffeld.

Dit boek voelde heel overhaast. Het verhaal was opzich goed, maar omdat bij elke spanningsopbouw de plot twist / “het moment” direct kwam, voelde dit echt te snel en daardoor voelde sommige scenes ook heel onrealistisch.
Ook vond ik dat er zoveel verteld werd in 265 blz, alsof het boek echt zo snel mogelijk geschreven moest worden, ik denk dat als ze het laatste stuk eruit had gehaald en het eerste deel veel uitgebreider had gemaakt het boek veel leuker was geweest, want ik moet zeggen dat het verhaal goed bedacht was.

Ook had ze de karakters, vooral Heleen veel beter mogen uitwerken, want ik las nu meer oké dit gebeurt, dan dit etc etc in plaats van dat ik echt meegetrokken werd in het verhaal.

Opzich had het ook een twee ster kunnen zijn, maar ik wil wat meer de boog tussen de boeken die ik echt heel leuk vind en minder leuk, vergroten. Dus geen aanrader deze vanuit mijn mening.

Werkelijk een van de slechtste boeken ooit. Jammer dat iemand die wel in een gezellige sfeer kan schrijven niet in staat is een leuk/spannend/geloofwaardig verhaal te bedenken.

Gelezen omdat ie in de vakantiebieb zat...laatste Vermeer ooit.

Frank and Heleen are taking an anniversary cruise. Frank disappears and we learn that he has faked his own death and is keeping secrets. Heleen learns about this and decides to investigate this herself.

I have to say from the outset that this book never really reached any great heights for me. After a strong opening, this book quickly descended into cliches and stereotypes, failing to keep any real mystery or suspense from chapter to chapter.

One of my biggest frustrations was in the writing of characters. There are times when the author goes to great length in describing secondary characters - only to find by the end that they play no great role in the story. It felt like so many words were wasted in doing that - when they could have been put to better use in keeping the story "afloat."

The other real turnoff for this was the "show" vs "tell" style. It was extremely annoying to be "told" everything by Heleen, rather than letting it develop organically through the story.

This is my least favourite of the three books by Suzanne Vermeer that I have read now. Certainly lacking in "mystery" or "thrills" due to the writing style.

This book was a present by the publisher, at Manuscripta 2010. I was quite curious, because I had never read anything by this author before.

The book was a quick and easy read (one evening and two mornings during breakfast) and it did exactly what I expected: it gave me a nice story that I could easily follow, without any serious brain activity. I do not like that for all my books, but for an 'in between read' during busy times it is just perfect.

The story itself is nice, it has an unexpected twist or two that makes the story better. What I also liked was, that there was a '10 years later' part. Usually the book stops when the story ends, when the mystery is solved. I often wonder (when the main characters get me) what would have happended to them 'afterwards', when the dust has settled. Despite it ended like I had expected/ hoped for them (silly, because they're only imaginary figures), it was still nice to read.

I'm not sure if I'll read one of her oher books very soon. Not because I did not like this one, but more because I hope to have enough energy to read books that challenge me more.

I started and finished Cruise by Suzanne Vermeer. It was a delightful and easy read - just perfect for summer! Thanks to NetGalley and Open Road Integrated Media for the advanced read.

Cruise is a novel about a married couple who end up on a cruise for their honeymoon. The husband mysteriously disappears in what we find out quickly is a plot to fake his own death.

The how and especially the WHY of this event is the basis of the whole novel. Cruise isn't really a mystery but there are some twisty plot points that keep it exciting. The writing style is fluid and light which makes the novel a quick read. Suzanne Vermeer does a wonderful job of painting a picture of the Mediterranean and her characters are well written.

What I particularly liked about this novel was the setting. Most of the book takes place in Spain and the Netherlands. This was such a refreshing change compared to all the novels that are set in sunny California or busy, trendy Manhattan. A setting to which the reader has no real reference point allows for more imagination and added a lot to the overall experience of the novel.

I recommend this to anyone looking to pick up a good, light read.

I enjoyed this book; it was well written, with rounded characters and a very interesting and sympathetic heroine. There were parts which were a little ‘slick’ where situations were resolved a little too easily, but, on the whole it was a very readable book. I’m not a quick reader, but I finished this book in record time, it was so interesting. The book was described as a ‘Thriller’ and at the beginning I was wondering where the thriller element was, but, in fact, it developed into quite a tense story. The ending was very satisfactory, with all the villains getting their comeuppance and a happy ending, which I always like.

I rate this book 4 stars – a good read.

This book started out pretty good and had great potential. Husband and wife go on an anniversary trip amd husband disappears without a trace. As the details unfold you really get drawn into the story.

Unfortunately this book got really boring just shy of the halfway point. The author seemed to move so quickly and skipped over story details that would have likely made this much more enjoyable.

Things did get a little better toward the end, but by that point I was so bored I just wanted to get it over with.

This book just was not for me.

In de vakantiebieb kwam ik dit boek tegen en dacht "Suzanne Vermeer" hiermee nog een kans te geven, maar ik vind het helemaal niks...

I'll be honest, I hadn't expected much of this book, and I only read it because I need to make space in my bookcase (and I can only get rid of books after I read them, is my rule). And I turned out to be right... and wrong.
At first, the book seems highly predictable. After the prologue, the conclusion is Frank's a d*ck and he fakes his death to be with his mistress. That turns out to be true, but things happen on the way.

The first few chapters seemed to conform my suspicions and I couldn't wait to finish the book. But once Heleen starts her investigation, it actually starts to get somewhat interesting. Is Frank a d*ck but a gay/bi one (I started to think the author had forgotten being bi was a thing, but she remembered in the end)? Okay, he isn't, but then what?
The suspense keeps up until Heleen finds Frank, jumps off his boat and manages to get to shore. And then... anti climax. Heleen immediately finds cops who believe her story and Frank and Romina are arrested, the end. Well, not the end, as about a quarter of the book is still left at that point. Then another boring part happens, describing how amazing Heleen's life is and how she lives happily ever after. And yet still a large chunk of the book is left. I was started getting bored again, when Frank's suicide happens and Romina's letter arrives. Then there is some suspence again, but honestly, I was a little disappointed when it turned out Heleen was wearing a wire, and the cops didn't even seem to consider het version of things and instead believed Heleen unconditionally. Also, was Romina actually planning to kill David? It seems to be her plan, but it's mentioned so casually? While other parts conform that despite everything, she still loves her son.

All in all, I have a bit ambivalent feelings about this book. It's definitely not my favourite ever, but it was better than expected, in some parts, while others confirmed my suspicions. Perhaps someone else is happier with it than me.

Je weet wel de series glee en keeping up with the Kardashians. Je kijkt het alleen omdat de extreme drama gwn vermakend is maar voor de rest is het een grote onrealistische zooi. Zo was de eerste helft van dit boek ook. Idk, maar ze gooide echt scenario's waarvan ik dacht "oke maar nee". Toen ik al bijna wou stoppen met lezen en ik dacht dat het verhaal klaar was kwamen de laatste 100 blz. Tot mijn verbazing zat dit vol spanning en vond ik stukken beter! Als dit nou ook in de eerste helft zat was t best een sterk boek geweest. Samenvattend: An A for the effort, maar uiteindelijk 2 (eigenlijk 2,5) ster.

Het boek was ok en las makkelijk weg maar ik voelde nergens maar een greintje spanning. Sommige gebeurtenissen werden zo afgeraffeld, veel dingen waren ook vergezocht of juist erg voorspelbaar. Ik vind het de omschrijving literaire thriller ook zeker niet waard. Het is gewoon een veredelde chicklit, maar dan 'spannend'. De hoofdpersoon vond ik ook erg eendimensionaal en ik kon geen sympathie of wat voor gevoel dan ook voor haar opbrengen. Een leuk tussendoortje, heb hem binnen 2 dagen uitgelezen maar het maakt me niet direct nieuwsgierig naar de andere boeken van Suzanne Vermeer.

Sommige delen vond ik echt ziek (als in hoe kan dit personage dit nu flikken) maar als ik daarover ga praten ga ik spoilers geven dus doe ik het niet.
Het laatste deel kon naar mijn mening echt wel wat korter.
De plottwisten kwamen wel weer op tijd en naar mijn mening onverwachts om de hoek kijken.

Ben in juli gestart aan dit boek en heb het in september uitgelezen. In het begin kon dit boek mijn aandacht niet vasthouden, (constant had ik andere boeken die ik eerst liever las) maar uiteindelijk er toch voor gegaan en werd het toch nog enigszins spannend! Al met al geen slecht boek maar ook geen 5 sterren waard naar mijn inziens.

Okay helaas, ondanks de "mooie voorkant" aldus dochterlief ;-) Niet mijn soort boek, zoals ik verwacht had. Mijn hemeltje, veel en veel te spannend. En een man die een affaire heeft en door fraude en moordpogingen probeert onder de gevolgen uit te komen, nee danku...hier ben ik niet van gediend.
