Tyldesley's The Mummy is an excellent overarching introduction to mummies and the cultural practice of mummification by the ancient Egyptians, starting with the mythology of Osiris all the way to the portrayal of mummies in contemporary (for 1999) popular culture. The illustrations are well thought out and in some cases, are visuals that get away the typical images usually seen.
This is a good starting point book and includes a shortlist of further reading texts.
