Bought this book by accident at a cheap knick-knack store. Stuck it on the shelf until nothing else around to read. What a wonderful gift this book was for me to explore! Not only have I enjoyed the historical travel about simple living in the Ozark hills of Missouri during the first part of the 20th century, but the enchanting stories of the main character's life as well. The book is so well written, and I was caught up in the story so much that I was seeing her life as she saw it- without bias or pre-conceived notions. This enabled me to be surprised a few times during the journey through the book. The vocabulary was challenging enough to be interesting. I began keeping a list of unfamiliar words. I learned a lot. I also learned about the self-sustained lifestyle of hill people, and their unabashed love for each other and sense of community. It is worth the read just to help one feel gratitude for what the generations before us had to do to establish a homestead, and to make us more grateful for what we don't have to contend with in modern times.
an amazing book! (There isn’t really a plot, more just daily life) The last page alone is a reason to read:,) I found this book at a book sale and it was published in the 60s I think, let me know if you want to borrow it!
A book with beautiful yet simple language, telling stories of her life in the Ozarks, and giving them such meaning, but subtly and artfully and simply.
