Six thousand sheep and twenty thousand acres of unspoiled land in the mountains of Montana! That was what Dan and Jack and their mother found when they arrived at Uncle Emmet's ranch, the Rising Arrow." As soon as Uncle Emmet had heard that his niece's husband was missing in Korea, he wrote and asked the family to visit him while awaiting further word from the Defenses Department. They came all the way from Missouri.
This is a re-read of a beloved book from my childhood that I came across on my bookshelf. The sense of place and the solid story of two boys learning about life on their uncle's ranch was a good as I remembered!
If I had read this book as a child like many of the other reviewers, I’m sure I would have loved it. As an adult, it was just mid. Somewhat detailed, but no plot, not exciting, the writing not great. A more modern Ralph Moody, with out the bad language.
This was an interesting look into the life of Montana sheep farmers in the 1950s. The constant poisoning/killing of groundhogs/magpies/coyotes was jarring, but I’m sure it’s truthful to the times. The illustrations by Jacob Landau were very well-done.
