All dads are different. They are clever, funny, brave, silly, and simply wonderful. But none is as special as your very own! A warm funny book for anyone who loves their dad!
Summary/Reason for Rating: This book is about dads and how special, unique, and important they are to children and how kids want to grow up to be just like them. The illustrations are of a dad bear and his cub. I give this book a rating of 5 because of the loving message and the detailed pictures. Each page describes the fun things dads do with their kids, including helping to ride a bike, blaming a toot on you, holding your hand, and they help you whatever you do. Reading this book made me think of my dad and the things we used to and still do together. Talking about dads blaming a toot on you and laughing when you burp reminded me of my daddy; the book really touched my heart. The images are incredible; they are detailed and have rich texture. I can feel how fuzzy the bears are; I can see the splashes, see the wind blow, and can clearly feel and relate to the expressions on all the faces.
I think it's safe to say that I love Smallman's illustrations. The ones in this book were SO adorable!! I loved seeing all of the father-son/child animals. So cute I could squeal, but I'm in a library and at the reference desk. I shall refrain. The looking-up-to-dad has been done in many Dad books, yes, but this one was great. I enjoyed it. I liked the flowing rhymes. I liked the realistic things (e.g. Dad not being perfect or Dad being a silly, not quite grown up boy himself).
Probably what sold me was Page 10, with Page 13 only ensuring that! Hey if you knew my brother A. you would totally see why that is absolutely hilarious. And I wouldn't put it pass one or two of my other brothers with their kids. To me, that just captured the fun and silliness that a dad can be, as well as the rest of the book getting how overall wonderful dads are. Perfect book to come out in time for Father's Day.
Could definitely work in a storytime for different age groups. Too bad I don't do storytime around Father's Day any more.
I really liked this book, and I think kids would, too. The text rhymes, which makes for a fun and entertaining read, and the illustrations are excellent. I really enjoyed how the book focused on the bear cub and father, but also showed other animal babies playing with their fathers. Some of the actions were adult/parent cringe-worthy , but I can totally see how they would appeal to children. And, unfortunately, I can totally picture my brother doing this with his kids! lol!!
Sweet and cozy, this celebrates the admiration a little bear has for his dad. Pleasantly rhyming text and large scale pictures make this book a natural for storytime. There's even room for a gentle fart joke or two.
There are many similar titles extolling the virtues of a dad and listing imperfections, as well. ("Some Dads" by Parr and "My Dad" by Browne, for example, albeit with human characters.) Still, the illustrations are attractive and it would be a solid choice for preschool storytimes.
"Some dads just love to snuggle and cuddle. Some dads join you when you jump in a puddle." Funny moments such as with tent, charming with a dad reading a story aloud to group of baby animals. Narrator realizes dad has faults, wants to be just like him.
