God's Leftovers

Rate this book
A young couple, a religious man, a gritty rapper, and a sublime videographer get stranded together in the desert. Little do they know, they’ll cross paths in a bloody fashion with one another as well as a hippie cult that has a fetish for the flesh. Welcome to the Valley of Fire, where sex magic, psychedelics, ancient tongues, and old gods reign supreme.

God’s Leftovers is not for the faint of heart. This brutal, visceral, shocking work of fiction is Ketchum meets Barker with a sprinkling of classic slashers and grindhouse pulp. If you want to be disgusted and unsettled, tapping into the vibe of films like Martyrs, I Spit on Your Grave, and Texas Chainsaw Massacre—this is your jam. I need to take a shower and douse myself in holy water.”—Richard Thomas, author of Spontaneous Human Combustion and Bram Stoker Award® nominee

“If you can picture The Hills Have Eyes imbued with Jodorowsky’s psychedelic sensibilities, you might get something close to God’s Leftovers. With it, Grant Wamack makes a spectacular, bloody entrance into the splatterpunk arena. You’ve gotta read this book!” —Lucas Magnum, author of Gods of the Dark Web

“Deadly secrets, psychedelic drugs, sex magic... Wamack knows a thing or two about hard times and in this novella, you see life itself staring back at you, brandishing your worst fears, daring you to turn the page. I’ve been following Grant Wamack’s work for a long time and God’s Leftovers is his calling card, proving he’s at the peak of his powers.” —Michael J. Seidlinger, author of Anybody Home?

The desert can do strange things to your head, you know. Some might call it heatstroke, others might call it a mirage or hallucination, but if you look hard enough, you will spot some crazy-ass shit everywhere.
Look east and you will see a man on horseback. You might not know him, but you do know he is a selfish bastard. I mean, who crosses the desert without giving their horse a name?
Look west and you might spot a guy running around with a fedora style hat and a whip, though you can’t be sure if he is running from or toward something.
Look south and you can see a short guy with a big, red moustache, running backwards in front of a camel, calling it a humped-back mule, lifting a gun over his head and warning the animal that when he said whoa, he meant…ouch. Well, that stopped it.
Look to the north and spot the rock. No, not just any rock, but The Rock. And he’s chasing a…no-no, not a heavily bandaged hospital patient, but probably something like a Mummy.

Now, at this point in time, I am going to say that if you didn’t get any of that, you are at least one generation younger than me. Some will enjoy that, while others will ask Google some really random questions shortly.

But this is supposed to be a book review, so let’s get back to this one. Wamack is a very good writer, I will give him that. Within a few pages it seemed like this story will be a love-letter to THE HILLS HAVE EYES – which happens to be one of my all-time favorite horror movies.
And I am giving an honest opinion here, the story went a way I didn’t expect and it just wasn’t for my personal taste. The moment it took a supernatural angle, it lost me. That piss-in-your-pants fear got lost – that’s what made the damn movie so great!

I may be biased because of the movie reference, I will readily admit that.
For the writing, it is a very strong four stars, but since the story didn’t work for me I have to bring it down to a 3.5 – I will still recommend it to those who happens to like supernatural horror of the brutal kind, especially when it involves cults.

This is a really brutal, dark horror story.

It's written so damn well, I couldn't put it down; it has excellent characters too which is a huge plus.

There are a few layers to the story but it's about cannibals that live out in the eerie and empty Nevada desert and hunt anyone who comes close to their camp.

Definitely reminded me of The Hills Have Eyes, it's obvious the author was inspired.

Horror fans are going to love this!

Thanks to the author for the advance review copy, appreciate it and keep up the good work; I'll be on the lookout for more of your work.

The Valley of Fire is a tourist hotspot in the middle of the Nevada desert, where families go to visit, but never come out.

This was the first book that I have read by the author, but I will definitely be reading a lot more.

Not for the faint hearted, this book is full of bloody gore, violence, cannibalism, rape and death. It reminded me of the movie, ‘The Hills Have Eyes’, and was just as brutal, even from the beginning.

I thoroughly enjoyed this novella, and know it will definitely be a winner with the fans of Splatterpunk, and extreme horror.

Thanks to BookSirens, the author Grant Wamack, and Bizarro Pulp Press, for providing me with a free ARC in return for an honest review

The desert engulfs human beings and those not so human with sand on fire. The purplish yellow sky encompasses every hunger under the sun. What approaches is not friendly. Reality is rendered in all colors, with red dominant. Fingers caress petroglyphs like ancient braille. Corporeal hunger rips through the vast wasteland of another soul's god. Violence rages with a life of its own, leaving blood swirled like Fibonacci sequences. This world is steeped in legend. Behold the leviathan.

God’s Leftovers is as murky as a midnight pool. This is a story not for those with a nervous disposition. If darkness is a veil, then Grant Womack lifts it to examine the scurrying underbelly of evil.

Where do I even begin with God’s Leftovers? The title makes you think, what on earth could it mean? Before opening the book, you’re left with questions, your brain goes one way, and your eyes try to decipher hidden meanings. Fear not – those questions are put on the back burner as the prologue guts you, stamps on you, and leaves you for dead.

The story focuses on a group of characters that find themselves in The Valley of Fire in Nevada for one reason or another. Korey, Anca, Scotty, Jerry & Will come across a group of strange beings known as The Collective, who are on a meditation retreat. The similarities of The Hills Have Eyes are obvious and the exploration of them being rejects or God’s leftovers and how they are treated as a whole. The social commentary is dark and gritty and was perfectly executed.

God’s Leftovers is NOT for the weak of the heart. This is extreme horror at its best or worst, depending on your perspective. It’s the kind of writing that comes from the deepest recesses of the human mind – the parts we don’t want to acknowledge, it lives within the pus and gore, but when it’s allowed space to grow, we get something as visceral as God’s Leftovers. It’s the perfect stage borne out of chance and depravity. The human condition is a tricky customer and no more than when it’s threatened with a painful death.

I warmed to certain characters, Korey & Anca. The latter has had a difficult life of being a sex worker. She’s accepted conditions and behaviours that are abhorrent. She finally found a slice of happiness with Will, a previous paying customer who convinced her to come away with him. She left a life of hardship in Europe behind and now has a working visa in America. What she endures at the hands of The Collective made me physically gag.

The Collective are a bunch of nasty motherfuckers…they lure people to their accommodation in the desert and perform sexual acts, which leads to murder. Those scenes are some of the most explicit and shocking pieces of imagery in a horror story. Womack has a direct line to your nightmares and makes them come to life with his special brand of Sinister horror.

Decent, but could've been much longer. This book had multiple story arcs that could've been expanded. Definitely short (60 pages) but still brutal and worth the read.

If you happen to be out in the desert for whatever reason, and its surprising how many are in this novella, you'll be wanting to avoid the Valley of Fire.

Secondly if you're unlucky enough to be stranded in said desert, then another thing you'll want to avoid is cannibalistic killers masquerading as yoga spiritualists.

How will you know they're cannibalistic killers you might ask, they'll be the ones that are overly nice, want you to stay overnight and are prone to insufferable chanting. Steer clear of the fucking nutters is my advice.

Gods Leftovers is an enjoyably brutal splatterpunk style horror, there's a multitude of characters who conveniently appear in the same place at the same time. You get enough to become emotionally invested in them and then its left down to who's going to get viciously killed, savagely dismembered, severly fucked, or if you're lucky, all three.

Describe this in one sentence.

If you go down to the woods today, you're lucky you're not in the fucking desert.

A Brutal, Brilliant Novella!

This was a one-sitting read for me. GOD'S LEFTOVERS is fast, violent, and filled with a lot of things that fans of extreme horror will love. If you're not reading Wamack, you're seriously missing out. Highly recommended!

I was excited to finally catch up with a Grant Wamack work. Grant is a writer I have spent some time with at cons and things. He had been a guest on the podcast. I knew he was a unique voice, and his novella was one I had wanted to read since it was announced. God’s Leftovers packs an unnatural amount of story and ideas into a thin 60 pages. The biggest negative here is that as much as I love short work I would have loved another forty pages. It is rare that I close a book and think there needed to be more. It is not needed here, It is a great novella I wanted, not needed more.

We’ll come back to that as I want to focus on the awesome stuff you get with this book. God’s Leftovers is a southwestern modern horror tale that makes use of the setting of the Valley of Fire and characters to present a vibe and story that is a pure product of Grant. The young couple who shouldn’t be in the desert, the out-of-place rapper, and the weird cult that has a strange relationship with the flesh.

With a no-nonsense set-up God’s Leftovers played in my mind on grainy film, and I could almost feel my feet sticking to the grindhouse theater floor. It is the kinda story that got rented to kids too young having to be careful their parents didn’t know they watched it. Wamack doesn’t flinch so serious trigger warnings apply. The violence is not implied, the visceral moments are as shockingly real as psychedelic and dark fantasy moments are unreal.

It is a combo that worked for me. This is a five-star 60-page novella. I enjoyed reading this novella and has me excited to read more of Grant’s work. Anyone who reads my reviews know I am a sucker for small moments that show a command of horror. “Shoes Crunched in the sand with each step. They felt far away, but still too close for comfort. Nicole wanted to scream, wail in frustration, but instead she bit her lip. She saw the man drop down on all fours scanning the ground for movement. She clamped a hand over her mouth willing him and his black ponytail to look the opposite direction. His head swiveled and locked in on her.”

Well-done moments like this are throughout the book I choose this one as my favorite.
Now could it have been longer? I loved this book at 60 pages but I think it could’ve been one hundred pages and not lost its short and hardcore tone. Will and Anca’s relationship being one arranged from Romanian over the internet gets attention and details, and it helps the character grow in our minds. All the characters get short backstories. It is well done but I wanted just a little more.

The Wiry Man, and The Collective – and their connection to nature are things I would have liked a little more exploration of. Not because the book is lacking those things but because it suggests them and I just wanted more.

God’s Leftovers is a one-sitting read and packs an amazing amount of story into 60 pages. It is not for everyone as it is very, very brutal. The most important takeaway is that I wanted more, more, more. That is a great thing Grant Wamack has my attention and horror readers looking for the gritty underground shit have a new author to check out.

Well shit that was a short little brutal read. This was a crazy ass ride.... Fucked up cult check, some supernatural crazy shit check, gore and violence check. I dug the hell out of this I guess my only complaint is that it was to short it just felt that there were lots of ways this short story could've been longer but still for 60 pages this packs a awesome gruesome punch. Grant Wamack you have a new fan bad ass story highly recommend

The Hills Have Eyes meets El Topo is what caused me to read this, I enjoyed reading this and thought it was a great horror novel. This was a darker topic in the horror genre and it's not for younger audience. It was what I was hoping for in a horror novel and enjoyed the way the author wrote it.

One cannot review this book without including the phrases that I spoke aloud while reading - "Oh my god, no!" - "AHHH WTF" - and lastly, "This is why I don't trust yoga cults in the desert!"

In all seriousness, this was a great novella by Grant Wamack. Yes, it was disturbing and gruesome and it's a guarantee that if I see someone in desert setting I will be running the opposite way, but all of these elements compile together to craft a new unique voice in horror!

One of my favorite portions of this novella, is that it follows horror movie stereotypes relatively well, (including death orders 🔪) I will definitely be reading more Wamack in the future!!

Excellent book for splatterpunk fans. I loved the desert setting and the cast of interesting and flawed characters. The horror element was an open-ended and unique blend of brutal, psychedelic, and supernatural that made this book a pleasure to read. Grant Wamack is the future.

If you want a short yet captivating horror novel? Then this is the one for you. Wamack’s prose are vicious and entertaining, never a dull moment. I read this in one sitting and then I reread certain paragraphs because it was such an awesome experience. Highly recommend this gem.

Also bonus points to Wamack for dedicating this book to the vastly under appreciated horror novelist from the 80s Brian Mcnaughton who in my eyes is the best of the bunch when it comes to grotesque horror/fantasy

This was a quick read - I read it in under two hours.

It was a cool story - a bunch of strangers get stranded in the desert and encounter a freaky cult. The writer did a good job setting this up.

Unfortunately, there were some parts where I fell out of the story - in one instance, one of the character's names is that of another character. The story felt rushed at times, and the ending was confusing. The gore is over the top, but I knew it would be based on the other reviews.

I wish there would have been more of a backstory to the characters, but I did like their eclectic personalities and how the writer described the Nevada desert and the cult.

A pretty gruesome tale for those who like that. Well written, but some of it just wasn’t my cup of tea. Some descriptions of brutal sex scenes were too much for me, though I’m ok with most gore I guess some of this one went too far. It was definitely disturbing, which I tend to like, and did like much of this. Recommended for those who are ok with some pretty over the top stuff.

This novel was…

Brutal.

Dark.

Grotesque.

Visceral.

Yet it was captivating in a way I cannot explain.

I couldn't put the book down for the life of me.

Even weeks later, I'm still thinking about the book and just how horrifying yet well-written this book is.

Darkly imaginative, deliciously grotesque and deeply unsettling, God’s Leftovers is a brutal little novella that packs quite an unanticipated punch. Right out of the gate readers are transported to the sacred Valley of Fire, a desert expanse in Nevada, and this desolate stretch of sand houses a multitude of dark secrets.

This is my first time getting a taste of Grant Wamack’s writing, and I’ve been left craving more. Immediately drawn into a well-written narrative dripping with the unexpected and utterly disturbing imagery, I could not put this gruesome beauty of a book down. There’s no shortage of elements to occupy your brain space peppered throughout these pages – an ensemble cast of characters with unique voices, a group of vile, emaciated cannibal cultists, sex, gods, the arcane, and oh so much blood – everything so perfectly portrayed to craft an overwhelming sense of creeping dread.

I thoroughly enjoyed my time between the pages of God’s Leftovers and am looking forward to diving into more. I would love to learn more about the history of The Collective – yes, this is me sending out a desperate plea to Wamack for a prequel! If you’re looking for a quick, consuming read ripe with over-the-top, intensely visceral violence, then I highly recommend trekking deep into the Valley of Fire. Loved it. Gimme more.

This was a dang good short read. I saw "cult" and "stranded" in the blurb and knew I was going to like this story. I was pleasantly surprised by the grotesqueness of God's Leftovers, as usually I'm let down when a story promises darkness and gore. That wasn't the case here. The prologue was far more than I was expecting (that's not a complaint), and it really set the whole tone for the story. I absolutely love movies like Texas Chainsaw Massacre and I Spit on Your Grave, so this was right up my alley.

The characterization was very well done despite the small number of pages. The characters really jumped out from their first introduction. Anca was my favorite up until . The writing itself was also fantastic.

I would have liked to read more of the ending though, especially More about The Collective in general would be hella interesting.

Visceral, violent and vivacious if you liked season 2 of American Horror Story this one does its justice.

“He closed his eyes as he came, and pale stars shuddered in the darkness behind his eyelids. He pulled out and thanked the universe for his fresh kill. Namaste.”

One simple line sets the scene of this fantastic gore horror ride. “A fly smacked against the window repeatedly. looking for an exit.”

Jerry is a little naïve, but you must give him a go for trying, “It’s a combination of mammals we hunted and killed ourselves. Connects us back to our roots. Our ancestors.”

Too short for me, I was left wanting more! That just indicates how much more this author has to offer!

Even though this is a short story it starts with a bigger bang than you would expect.
We start right in the middle of the action. A couple who have seen their kids murdered are running from said murderer.
The writing is intense and so absorbing you feel like you can smell the carnage.
This definitely has a ‘The hills have eyes’ feel to it but if anything is more horrific.
Definitely going to check out more from this author as 62 pages is not enough of his writing.

5/5 stars for, Gods Leftover by Grant Wamack

Possible Tw
Murder, sexual assault, blood, explicit descriptions of playing with human parts, drug usage, use of drugs without consent, desecration of a corpse.... I think that covers it.

So..
Wow.
Fucking, wow.

This is the first book, that I have read by Grant, so it was... A experience, I will never forget, and tell others about.

This is definitely not a book that those with a weak stomach should read. But, if you can handle, horror, gore, even a bit of torture p0rn.. Then this is a book you should read.

This was a ARC, that I got from booksirens , and let me just say that I love that books like this can find a place where it can get the reads, reviews, etc. that is SO FUCKING deserves.

It is available for purchase on the Zon, it is less than 70 pages. It was a quick read, but I found myself reading parts multiple times.

This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
